people that bump park should have their licence taken away

Surely no one thinks bump parking is acceptable? Especially now parking is easy as new cars all have rear parking cameras with guides.

I see it all the time in London and I've never witnessed it happening to my high end car, but I'm sure the small bumps are caused by it.

PerspicaciaTick · 26/07/2015 17:37

Still not sure what bump parking is. If it involves a crap driver deliberately crashing into my car because they can't judge the size of a space...not acceptable.

BackInTheRealWorld · 26/07/2015 17:37

Why is the fact your car is high end relevant by the way, I'd love to hear?

Salmotrutta · 26/07/2015 17:38

So you don't like bump parking or floating people OP.

What else don't you like?

Northernlurker · 26/07/2015 17:38

Bumpers are NOT an aide to parking in tight spots. They are there to protect you car from low speed impacts, not to invite them!

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 26/07/2015 17:38

I usually turn the sensor parking off - it annoys me. I don't like machines telling me what to do Grin

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 26/07/2015 17:39

15 plate car, no parking sensors (though why would you need them, it's what mirrors are for)

54 plate car, has parking sensors (already fitted when we bought it).

In my 30 odd years of driving I have never seen anyone 'bump park' nor has it ever been done to my car to the best of my knowledge as I have never seen any evidence on the bodywork.

MagratGarlik · 26/07/2015 17:39

Of course bump parking is not acceptable (unless in Paris, where it seems almost inevitable).

However, yabu to think all new cars have parking sensors, cameras with guides etc. I have two very old (classic) cars. Neither have any of those things. Neither do they have power steering. OK, that's fine, that's my responsibility to drive cars I can park without damaging others (and I don't) - but, your car being "high-end" is no more important than my old cars.

Kayden · 26/07/2015 17:39

I paid more for 'extras' in a very average Kia Picanto for reversing sensors. They're annoying bastards, wish I hadn't bothered. They always seem angry.

DefinitelyMaybeNo · 26/07/2015 17:39

High end car is irrelevant and this thread is clearly a stealth boast.

Bump parking is when you know your car is parked as its hit the thing behind it/in front of it.

It's not a thing. Although it may be acceptable to do it to annoying boasters. ????

NoSOHisadealbreaker · 26/07/2015 17:39

Popcorn Backintherealworld ? Grin

FenellaFellorick · 26/07/2015 17:40

I don't attempt to speak for the op but my interpretation would be that they think it is worse to damage an expensive car than a cheap one.

my own view would be that it's all bad but worse for whoever can least afford repairs, regardless of car value.

LazyLouLou · 26/07/2015 17:40

My car has a long bonnet and slightly restricted view to the rear - oh, those soft topped sports cars, you know? That was not too stealthy was it? Smile

But despite this I have never 'bump parked' nor do I know anyone else who has. Never heard of it before.

Is it a London thing? Grin

[steps back a little and waits...]

Hulababy · 26/07/2015 17:41

Never seen anyone do this at all.
I do have sensors - not particularly high end though. Dh has sensors too but I know many people with cars, new and old, which don't have sensors. Still never seen anyone do it.

Doesn't matter how much a car costs. It's never acceptable to bump into other people's cars. Having a high end car is irrelevant in that aspect.

Germgirl · 26/07/2015 17:43

My car is 8 months old & doesn't have sensors. It's only a Ford Ka though, although it is a Zetec, so a high end low end car :)
I've never seen anyone bump park in this country though. Seen it in Italy but not here. Is it a thing now? How have I managed to avoid it?

MagratGarlik · 26/07/2015 17:44

Oh and when it comes to people having their licence taken away, I'd save that and worse for the ass-hole hit and run driver who drove dp of the road a couple of weeks ago and left him with a broken leg (except the police can't be arsed to look for him, so he gets away scot-free).

There are worse problems on the road.

Wideopenspace · 26/07/2015 17:44

Is it acceptable to use your bumpers to bump into someone's high end car if they have pointed out the fact it is high end? Especially when they have further highlighted this by saying they have experience of hiring low end cars whilst on high end holiday.

Surely that's ok?

Germgirl · 26/07/2015 17:44

I don't think it's a London thing. I live in SE London & haven't seen it. Maybe the Op's neighbours are jealous of the high end car & are deliberately bumping it?

magzjobes45 · 26/07/2015 17:44

Its very relivant as bumps on a high end car devalue a car a lot more than an old run around near the end of its life. A small scratch on the alloys has cost 200 to repair. When someone causes damage the value of the damage they cause is relevant in the legal process.

OP posts:
DesertIslandPenguin · 26/07/2015 17:45

I think bump parking is where the space is only just big enough, so you reverse back against one car hard enough to bump it back a bit, and then pull forward and bump the one in front so that you've got more space to yourself. I've seen it a few times but it's absolutely not normal.

OP, try parking somewhere else.

Sparklingbrook · 26/07/2015 17:46

There was a thread a while ago and many posters said it was acceptable to 'kiss' bumpers when parking. I and a few others were all 'WTF' and got accused of beiing precious as that's what bumpers were for. Confused

If that's what the Op is on about.

FenellaFellorick · 26/07/2015 17:47

Your poor husband, Magrat. I hope he's healing well. What an awful attitude of the police!

BackInTheRealWorld · 26/07/2015 17:49

one might say that if you can afford a high end car you can afford to repair it more than a poor person in an old car.
It's quite the dilemma, who should I crash into now

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 26/07/2015 17:50

Geeze having an expensive car is relevant to my post

Expense is relevant to a person. Do you think your expensive car if you are well-off (which you appear to be saying - correct me if I'm wrong) is more important than an old jalopy is to someone struggling to make ends meet?

From what I have gathered from other posters as to what bumper parking is, then no, it is not acceptable. But it is not acceptable whether you have a 'high end' car, or an old banger. Just means the other person can't park properly, so shouldn't have a driver's licence.

Are you posting from France or Italy, OP? It does appear to be acceptable in some countries. In the UK, being able to correctly park without touching another vehicle is still (I believe) part of the driving test. When I did my test, we weren't even allowed to touch the kerb - immediate fail.

WorktoLive · 26/07/2015 17:50

Bump parking is absolutely normal in Spain, people leave the handbrake of to facilitate it. Big difference is that they use cars for transport as opposed to a demonstration of how well off you are.

No one cares if cars are scratched and dented as it doesn't stop them getting you around.

Tutt · 26/07/2015 17:50

I have a 'high end' very nice car and it is completely irrelevant to your question!
The cost of a damn car doesn't come into the fact that someone 'bumps' it or whatever you are calling it.
That is what bloody insurance is for, alloy repair is only that much if you take to a main dealer.
So are you one of those people that park a mile from the kerb...
A car is a car regardless of cost and yeah it sucks if someone hits/scratches it but come on you are lucky to have a car!
