Surely no one thinks bump parking is acceptable? Especially now parking is easy as new cars all have rear parking cameras with guides.

I see it all the time in London and I've never witnessed it happening to my high end car, but I'm sure the small bumps are caused by it.

They were not amused - but as it doesn't actually leave a mark they couldn't do anything.

So it's fine to purposely damage someone else's property so long as you don't leave a mark? Hmm

ScrambledSmegs · 26/07/2015 22:39

Grin Sadly I'm pretty sure our neighbour is no such thing, MadeMan. It's just DH has a very active imagination.

I doubt he actually scared her away anyway - he's very pleasant really, and she's quite terrifying. It was just a funny coincidence. I was almost sad that she stopped parking here too, it was something to watch during the long periods feeding my newborn DC.

MagratGarlik · 26/07/2015 22:44

RingtheBells, parallel parking became part of the test in the early 90's. I know this because it was introduced just weeks before I took my test (so, whilst I was still having lessons).

woodhill · 26/07/2015 22:51

love my parking sensors. I would be mortified if I hit another car, makes such a noise, awful

theendoftheendoftheend · 26/07/2015 23:06

Ha pipbin you can't purposefully damage someone's property without actually, you know, causing damage!
My car is a proper old wreck, so I wouldn't care or notice if someone did do this, spose I would if it was suitably high end though.

DonkeyOaty · 26/07/2015 23:15

We don't have this problem out here in dem sticks. We've all got battered Landys and Toyotas.

I can't believe Crouch End is considered high end posh now.

I last visited 20 or so years ago and it was an actual dump - as in garbage strewn around, black bins overflowing , feral cats roaming around etc, and it didn't seem to have any of the intrinsic architectural or historic appeal of places like Brixton or parts of Hackney. I know it's property prices have gone up a fair bit, but that's just because of the rest of London.

Sigh. Just makes me feel so old when I'm not even bloody 40 yet.

Pipbin · 26/07/2015 23:37

Ha pipbin you can't purposefully damage someone's property without actually, you know, causing damage!

So just because the paint isn't scratched it doesn't mean that there isn't any damage.

Lweji · 26/07/2015 23:59

I can't believe Crouch End is considered high end posh now.

Apparently it has been gentrified trollified.

Probably no more space in Highgate and the surplus went rolled down the hill.

JassyRadlett · 27/07/2015 00:03

Christ, people, living in London doesn't give you carte blanche to be shit and parking and pretend you're not.

You bump into someone else's car when you're parking, you're shit at parking. It really is that simple. Not 'oh, but London is different'. You're just really, really bad at parking.

(Live in London. Have always parked on the street. Have never 'bumped' anyone when parking. Certainly wouldn't give myself airs about how clever I was to park someone else in, or get away with bumping someone else's car because there was no visible damage.)

Lweji · 27/07/2015 00:06

Who said it was ok to bump park in London?

JassyRadlett · 27/07/2015 00:11

Plantsitter and limited both implied that their odd parking habits were linked to being in London - otherwise why mention London.

Separately I wouldn't call Crouch End properly posh really - more MC and on the artsy/creative industries side of same.

theendoftheendoftheend · 27/07/2015 00:13

Well if the damage is so secret it doesn't leave are mark, I doubt its worth worrying about, especially as if its from bump parking they'll have been going about 5mph so really apart from marking the body work in some way what other damage could it really do. Are bumpers painted anyway? Is that what you get with these high end vehicles?

ScrambledSmegs · 27/07/2015 00:18

'Bump parking' isn't an accepted thing. It's just being a bad driver. No one watches you parking like that and goes 'oh, they're bump parking'. They're either shocked or laughing at you. Or both.

And these days you might even end up on YouTube with millions of views of your unorthodox parking style.

SonceyD0g · 27/07/2015 00:35

Very upset that I can't bump park into a high end car because of my tow bar.
Well I could but it's not going to be pretty......

limitedperiodonly · 27/07/2015 00:49

No one here has ever touched another bumper?

You've never kerbed your wheels?

I don't believe it.

ShadowStar · 27/07/2015 00:54

Limited, there's a big difference between deliberately "bump parking", and accidentally touching another bumper or kerbing your wheels occasionally.

limitedperiodonly · 27/07/2015 00:56

So what's the problem if you don't cause any damage?

nooka · 27/07/2015 00:59

Do you get out every time and inspect he other person's bumper to make sure you've not damaged it, and if so leave a note with your insurance details? How do you know you've not caused any damage?

I manage claims for my company and so get rental car bills for minor damage from time to time. Even small dents and scratches cost hundreds of pounds to repair unless you have the time, skills and equipment to do it yourself.

limitedperiodonly · 27/07/2015 01:06

My car is left there so they can leave a note on mine if they notice damage. Because no one ever has, I imagine it's because there has been no damage. I have no wish to damage my own car, which is quite nice.

But that's what bumpers are for at minuscule impact.

nooka · 27/07/2015 02:02

So you are saying that everyone should inspect their bumpers in case YOU have damaged their car (even though most people won't generally assume they have parked next to an incompetent driver) but you have no obligation to check even though you are the one that has deliberately driven into their car? You have no idea if you have caused damage or not then, it's a complete assumption.

WorktoLive · 27/07/2015 05:38

Tiny scratches don't have to cost hundreds of pounds to repair. The nice people at chipsaway or similar will touch up both bumpers for about a hundred quid.

Cars always pick up bumps and scrapes even if you don't bump Park. I always used to get my company cars done before they were returned as otherwise the lease company would charge hundreds of pounds to fix minor damage as they seemed to expect three year old cars to remain in showroom condition Hmm.

JassyRadlett · 27/07/2015 06:50

But that's what bumpers are for at minuscule impact.

You keep saying this, despite numerous people telling you it's untrue. Have you got a source for this? I've trawled the web but all I can find is a story from DirectLine in 2007 where they say it's against the law, and quite a few panicked posts in various forums from people who are being pursued under s172 of the RTA for damage not immediately visible from their abysmal parking.

So can you tell us where we can get confirmation of this idea that it's fine, and what these parts of cars are for?

Tuskerfull · 27/07/2015 07:33

Dry you eyes love and learn to drive.

That's what she said to you? Good for her, she was totally right.

Pipbin · 27/07/2015 07:35

Well if the damage is so secret it doesn't leave are mark, I doubt its worth worrying about

Do you know that you are meant to throw away a car seat after an accident or a crash helmet if it's been dropped even if they look fine?
An accidental bump is one thing but to claim that bashing about at another persons property is fine if you don't leave a mark is selfish and inconsiderate.
