people that bump park should have their licence taken away

Surely no one thinks bump parking is acceptable? Especially now parking is easy as new cars all have rear parking cameras with guides.

I see it all the time in London and I've never witnessed it happening to my high end car, but I'm sure the small bumps are caused by it.

In Italy I have heard it called 'kiss parking' as in ' ' I'll just give this car allittle bacio (kiss) and we will be all parked up'
See? Change perception of something and voila! No longer offensive!

Tuskerfull · 27/07/2015 08:01

See? Change perception of something and voila! No longer offensive!

Nope, whatever cutesy name it's given it's still terrible parking and not acceptable in the UK.

justonemorethread · 27/07/2015 08:03

It was just a joke.... Hardly talking human rights here!!!

Tuskerfull · 27/07/2015 08:05

Unfortunately there are some atrocious drivers on this thread who have, in all seriousness, referred to it as "kiss" parking!

sanfairyanne · 27/07/2015 08:59

erm no 'kiss' parking still makes it shit parking
we just have higher driving standards and a harder driving test

think you'd pass your test with kiss parking?

ShadowStar · 27/07/2015 09:48

limited, If you habitually "bump park", then you're likely to cause minor damage at least occasionally. If you're not checking the cars every time, you just don't know whether you've caused damage or not.

You say you've never come back to a note on your car. Maybe that's because there's no damage. But maybe there is damage and they've not checked for it before driving off because bump parking isn't a normal parking technique in the UK. Maybe they saw damage, but didn't leave a note on your car because they didn't witness you bump parking and weren't sure who was to blame. Maybe you returned to your car and left before they got back to their car and saw the damage. You can't just assume there's no damage because there's no note.

pollyenta · 27/07/2015 09:53

Have to say I don't really see the issue. I don't do it, but I wouldn't be bothered if someone touched my car if in a tiny space, especially if I'd parked too close to them. All this talk of "bashing" other cars is massive exaggeration. Touching another car very gently at about 1mph cannot be described as "bashing", and is all I've ever seen anyone do.

Do you know that you are meant to throw away a car seat after an accident or a crash helmet if it's been dropped even if they look fine?
Cars aren't made of plastic or polystyrene/foam Confused

Genuinely, if I thought that a tiny tap would damage my car I'd call the car not fit for purpose.

think you'd pass your test with kiss parking?
You also fail your test if you pull forwards/backwards more than once each way when you are parallel parking, should we all avoid that too?!

Pipbin · 27/07/2015 10:33

Are there still some people honestly defending this as acceptable behaviour?

My point abut crash helmets and car seats is that just because you can't see the damage it doesn't mean there isn't any.

Pipbin · 27/07/2015 10:46

Cars aren't made of plastic or polystyrene/foam

Bumpers are Hmm

sanfairyanne · 27/07/2015 11:18

pulling forward and backward once each way isnt causing damage. cant say i do it though, i mean parallel parking isnt that tricky! reverse in, pull forward a bit is usually enough.

merrymouse · 27/07/2015 11:27

I'm confused - is bump parking

  1. when you accidentally touch another car while parallel parking - isn't this just something that can usually be avoided but sometimes happens?
  2. physically moving the other car as they do in paris - never seen this in the UK
  3. intentionally touching another car when you park - in which case why?
justonemorethread · 27/07/2015 11:34

Well it's a good job I'm half British, at least I'm half perfect. Not that I could ever hope to achieve British standards of perfection, but still, some consolation.

(On the upside, I'm only half prejudiced about anything that comes from forrin lands)

And yes I hold a British licence, don't make a habit of bump / kiss parking, in fact never do.
If you live in Rome or Paris you might be forced to resort to it every now and then, but as a consequence people are a bit more tolerant of theircars being touched and in gengeneral more pffft about scratches on cars.

And by the way Europeans hold a European licence, as do you!

Anyway can't believe we're all getting so heat up about car bumpers!!! I don't do it but honestly wouldn't care if I saw someone do it to my car.
( wanders off to other threads to find British sense of humour)

Tuskerfull · 27/07/2015 11:37

merrymouse it's C, and the reason is that some people are so bad at parking they can't do it any other way, or they want to squeeze their cars into spaces that are too small and thus block other people in.

merrymouse · 27/07/2015 11:40

But surely you begin the manoeuvre not intending to touch the other car? I have never heard anybody say they intend to touch another car.

dangerrabbit · 27/07/2015 11:41

I have done this by accident back when I was learning to drive. Are there a lot of learners in your area op?

Tuskerfull · 27/07/2015 11:42

merrymouse if you look earlier in the thread there's at least one poster who does, and thinks it's okay.

Pipbin · 27/07/2015 11:42

Exactly Merry, but it would seem that some people believe that it's what bumpers are there for (they aren't, it's mainly to protect pedestrians and to absorb impact) and hitting other cars is just a part and parcel of parking.

sanfairyanne · 27/07/2015 11:43

justonemorethread, sorry bit confused there, are you saying you think there is a standard european driving test or just that licenses are valid across europe? they arent all the same test, some are easier, some harder, some corrupt (you pay the examiner and 'pass'), some not.

AlisonBlunderland · 27/07/2015 11:45

I assumed "high end" meant something like a SUV that sits high off the roadBlush

QuinionsRainbow · 27/07/2015 11:45

Last time I looked, both ends of my car were quite low. I think it is so I can see out of the front and rear windows when I'm parallel parking without using my bumpers as parking aids.

justonemorethread · 27/07/2015 11:51

European licenses meet a certain standard, as opposed to eg a licence from Zimbabwe, that is only valid one year in the UK. Some foreign countries meet British standards so you don t need to convert to a British licence or pass a test in the UK ever (Italian licenses being among these)
There must be some criteria by which the UK asseses this.

Happy to stand corrected if someone knows more about this.

Tuskerfull · 27/07/2015 11:58

Driving conventions and standards differ between countries. I'm sure that's not news to anybody. It doesn't mean the British way is the best but it also doesn't mean that we have to accept all driving practices as good an equal. For example, I hear that "bump parking" is normal and acceptable in France, which I'm sure most of us do not want to become normal and acceptable over here, but I also hear that middle-lane driving isn't rampant in France like it is here.

sanfairyanne · 27/07/2015 11:59

i dont know if they meet a certain basic standard or if it is just part of the whole european equivalence thing where you are not allowed to discriminate against quals from other european countries. you still have to change to a uk licence after 3 years but no test. there used to be european driving test tourism til the rules were changed so you had to be resident for 6 months (i think) before you could sit the test, as it was easier to pass in some countries.

justonemorethread · 27/07/2015 12:01

Have to go offline now, happy bickering everyone!

justonemorethread · 27/07/2015 12:05

Laughing at the thought of Italian driving exams including kiss parking in the test.
'No no no, you have to keeesss, de car, not bump! Try next time. But don't do in UK, Okey?'
