people that bump park should have their licence taken away

Surely no one thinks bump parking is acceptable? Especially now parking is easy as new cars all have rear parking cameras with guides.

I see it all the time in London and I've never witnessed it happening to my high end car, but I'm sure the small bumps are caused by it.

Well when you are on 118K like the OP you would want high end obvs. Wink

chippednailvarnish · 26/07/2015 20:45

Crotch End! That made me snort Christina Grin

Christinayanglah · 26/07/2015 20:46

I would like my end to be a bit higher

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 26/07/2015 20:46

@ADishBestEatenCold

"But when the OP is a PBP as is the case here"

What on earth is a PBP? I think MNHQ people should only ever use acronyms that are actually on the Acronyms list (so to lead by example Wink)

Fair point. You know TSSDNCOP though Grin

I wonder how diamond encrusted bumpers would look in combination with the rust on our car? Maybe we could cover the rust with diamonds and call it "high end" shabby chic? The diamonds would cause even more damage to the cars of peasants who bump park

bumblingbovine49 · 26/07/2015 20:48

I think what a lot of people are referring to when they say bump parking on this thread is also know as "parking in a place that is too small for your car". If you have to bump another car's bumper to get into a space, it is too small for your car. Find another space. I know this is not always easy, I grew up in London and spent may pf my working years there so now a lot about how frustrating it is to park a car there. However, if the space is big enough for your car there is absolutely no need to touch the other vehicle when you park, if it isn't big enough , look for another space.

If you you parked with enough space to get out but find your car "boxed in" when you get back them "bumping" to get out of the space is more acceptable, albeit to be avoided if at all possible.

The type of car "bumped" is completely irrelevant

ScrambledSmegs · 26/07/2015 20:51

Ah, this reminds me of the woman who lives nearby and can't park her car for shit. She used to bump other cars "in a parking sense" (her words) and would ignore or verbally abuse anyone who protested, including the nice community police officer who was passing on his bike one night.

Until the time that I saw her do it to a brand new, very expensive-looking car with the owner sat inside it. Who happens to be a man that DH swears is some kind of North London Tony Soprano. I don't know what he said to her, but she hasn't parked in our street again, despite actually living on it Shock

I've rarely seen anyone else bump cars when they park.

HighwayDragon · 26/07/2015 20:54

The only thing that I ever "bump" is the picket fence in front of parking space, it bends, when I hit it I know I've gone far enough Blush

MadeMan · 26/07/2015 20:56

"Who happens to be a man that DH swears is some kind of North London Tony Soprano. I don't know what he said to her, but she hasn't parked in our street again, despite actually living on it"

This is what London misses; old time proper villains keeping the neighbourhoods respectable for decent people and their cars. Smile

"Fair point. You know TSSDNCOP though"

Sorry, can't talk about my work. Grin

RosePetels · 26/07/2015 21:19

Completely off topic but crouch end is an area in North London, near Alexander palace

limitedperiodonly · 26/07/2015 21:25

I've driven all sorts of cars and vans but now drive a Fiat 500. I get into the smallest spaces. I am stunned by people who can't park or pull out and expect me to give them space.

nooka · 26/07/2015 21:25

I'm amazed to see a few people boasting about their poor parking skills on this thread. I used to live in London, and even at one time thought about moving to Crouch End (until we realised that it's poncy level was just too off the scale for us). I don't believe I have ever watched someone deliberately choose a space to small for their car and attempt to push the neighbouring cars out of their way. If I was sitting in one of those cars when that was happening I think I'd be more likely to move forward enough so that it was clearly completely impossible for them to squeeze in than to move over (assuming that there was little room behind).

I have been in a self parking car, which was cool. Also sounds like a few people need one!

nooka · 26/07/2015 21:26

That's the place RosePetals

ghostyslovesheep · 26/07/2015 21:26

I am 5ft 1" and drive a big 4x4 - I manage to park without needing to hit other drivers - never heard of anything so daft as 'that's what bumpers are for' did you learn to drive in the dodgems?

Lweji · 26/07/2015 21:26

Alexandra Palace, even.

RingtheBells · 26/07/2015 21:30

I'm useless at parking but I do live on a road in a small town where it's easy to park, rarely park on very busy roadsides and never had to learn for my driving test as it was before they bought that bit in. I guess if I lived in a busy street I would soon learn.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 26/07/2015 21:32

Never heard of bump parking before. New car coming in the next couple of weeks will have parking sensors but I've lived without them until now!

JassyRadlett · 26/07/2015 21:38

I am stunned by people who can't park

Yes, me too. My definition of 'park' excludes hitting other cars, though.

limitedperiodonly · 26/07/2015 21:40

Once upon a time about 30 years ago I left my office and found a girl who was crying because she couldn't get out from behind my car - a Mini - and in front of another one.

She'd tried to leave a lot of space front and back because she wasn't very good at negotiating space.

She hadn't realised that a good parker with a small car could nip in.

Anyway, I pulled out without trashing her car and carried on with my work.

Dry you eyes love and learn to drive.

Pipbin · 26/07/2015 21:41

'Bump parking' is not a thing. It's simply an excuse for poor parking.
It is not what bumpers are for. They are there in case of an accident. It's like saying that it's fine to cut yourself while cooking as there is a packet of plasters.

RachelRagged · 26/07/2015 21:54

lolll what a f'king show off

DurhamDurham · 26/07/2015 22:18

When I first learnt to drive a car I used to routinely 'bump' in to out garage doors....it's how I knew I was home. My girls were little at the time and after every journey they used to sit in the back and clap...........I think they were celebrating the fact that I'd got them home in one piece rather than applauding my driving skills.

RingtheBells · 26/07/2015 22:22

I can't remember when parallel parking became part of the test, I just had to do a 3 point turn, that was in the 1980s.

plantsitter · 26/07/2015 22:26

I do this - now I know it has a name I feel validated instead of slightly (but not very) guilty. I'm in London. I did it when someone was in their car once, by accident. They were not amused - but as it doesn't actually leave a mark they couldn't do anything. And I was very apologetic. adds another check mark to the list of reasons I'm a Mumsnet pariah along with being fat and a SAHM
