To think coming down for breakfast in a hotel in your PJs is really bad manners

We were away at the weekend in a hotel with a couple of friends whose teenage daughters insisted on coming down to breakfast each morning in skimpy pyjamas. We were embarrassed and could see hotel guests looking a bit askance. However, their parents didn't say anything so there was nothing we could do.
They also lounged around the general reception area for about an hour afterwards using their ipads, before going upstairs to get dressed.

AIBU to think this was rude and they should have been told firmly to get dressed before coming downstairs?

Needs - thanks for clarifying.

Viscounts make me feel nostalgic.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 22/07/2015 20:11

I love you, I do

Wideopenspace · 22/07/2015 20:16

MMMMMMMMMM

Flashbangandgone · 22/07/2015 20:17

Not sure what all the fuss is about.... Personally I wouldn't wear my PJs down to breakfast in a hotel but it's not like they came down butt naked or in a gimpsuit. People should just chill a bit more and live and let live... They're teenagers... They're breaking a harmless social convention - that's what teenagers do ffs! Get over it grandmas and get outraged at something that actually matters!

Salmotrutta · 22/07/2015 20:24

I don't think anyone's outraged as such Flashbang - just thinking it's inappropriate.

Sweaty mingers and all that...

You know? That just out of bed look?

MadamArcatiAgain · 22/07/2015 20:27

It makes them look a bit slobby, but I fail to see why it is 'rude' ,or indeed anyone else's business, what these 2 wear.

Viviennemary · 22/07/2015 20:30

It just simply isn't done. How rude and inconsiderate of them.

Wideopenspace · 22/07/2015 20:33

Salmon people have used the word disgusting...suggests a certain amount of outrage...

Viv but why isn't it done? Who decided that? And how is it inconsiderate? It doesn't (or shouldn't) remotely affect anyone...you always have the option of y'know...not looking

annandale · 22/07/2015 20:33

Grin flash, I agree with you that the social convention is harmless...

I said I would feel sorry for them, not outraged. I'd feel just as sorry for them if they wore Pjs to their leavers' prom or as a bride. Would indicate low standards and potentially low self esteem IMO. Or IGO (in grandma's opinion)

Flashbangandgone · 22/07/2015 20:34

I don't think anyone's outraged as such Flashbang - just thinking it's inappropriate.

Ok, 'outrage' is a little strong but the Op and others on here are unhealthily concerned by some pretty innocent teenage behaviour... All very Hyacinth Bucket if you ask me

Flashbangandgone · 22/07/2015 20:37

if they wore Pjs to their leavers' prom or as a bride.... I'd feel sorry for them too, but this is very different IMO .... people often eat breakfast at home in their pjs. These girls just obviously didn't feel they should 'conform' just because they were in a hotel. Very teenage and no harm done.

Loafliner · 22/07/2015 20:41

I've never observed anyone in pjs doing the school run, in a supermarket or eating breakfast at a hotel - i'd think it was a bit odd but slightly amusing too, as long as they know how to behave who cares. The things people get worked up about on Mumsnet never fails to amaze me.....

HemanOrSheRa · 22/07/2015 20:48

achieve15 the cool comfort nightwear sort of works. I still get night sweats but not as bad.

It specifically says in the Hotel brochure that guests will find a robe and slippers in their room to wear to the spa area. I'm going to have to brazen it out Smile.

I can't say I feel particularly outraged by PJ's at breakfast. Just that it's a bit of a poor show. Except at Wide's hotel. I'll be down for breakfast with sweaty bed head in my M&S onesie Grin.

waterrat · 22/07/2015 21:01

Now that air b and b exists I don't understand why anyone would go to a hotel? Therfore this whole thread confuses me

achieve15 · 22/07/2015 21:02

Heman, thanks. I think all hotels have that reference, by the way, but then you are likely to find a locker when you get there. if there's a day spa for non-resident guests, you will. Also, you might find changing rooms in the spa area anyway because of people changing out of wet swimming gear.

Flashbangandgone · 22/07/2015 21:06

Actually, having re-read this thread 'outrage' was an appropriate term to describe some people who were, and I quote absolutely horrified by the behaviour and someone who even thought they was reasonable to demand that hotel staff re-cook their breakfasts as they would feel so offended they couldn't bare to share a room with such people.... Such a pompous over-reaction!

SirChenjin · 22/07/2015 21:19

Herman - if you go down to breakfast in an M&S onesie at Minging Towers you will be sneered at for being a complete snob who has ideas way above her station (they'll probably spit in your value sausages too). It's Primark or George only there Grin

Wideopenspace · 22/07/2015 21:26

Wheatgrass enema sir?
Grin

SirChenjin · 22/07/2015 22:02

It's lard and suet enemas you'll be giving at MTs Grin

HemanOrSheRa · 22/07/2015 22:06

Spit in my sausage! Shock.

I grew wheatgrass a few years ago. It tastes grim. I didn't funnel the juice up my arse though. Maybe that's where I went wrong Grin.

Thanks achieve. I'm 'best woman' at the wedding but of all the things I could worry about the room to spa thing has really troubled me! And I really need to use the spa - it looks lovely.

SirChenjin · 22/07/2015 22:15

Wheatgrass is a dish best served up your arse - most definitely Grin

WanderingTrolley1 · 22/07/2015 22:25

I've been down to a hotel breakfast in (decent, flesh-covering) pjs a few times - abroad and at home, and nobody, seemingly, has been overtly bothered (least of all me).

I don't see the issue - as long as you're not dining in a g-string.

paddymcgintysmum · 22/07/2015 22:27

What sort of hotel OP?

Wouldn't make any difference to me though, jamas? I'm out.

I saw someone the other day, jamas and dressing gown at least a mile from the nearest shop.

I think this jama wearing will soon be as horrible as shell suits were many years ago.

Chavs only.

paddymcgintysmum · 22/07/2015 22:28

Just book Marriott.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 22/07/2015 23:58

I am fucking outraged and more than a little peckish.

I just sent a taxi to the local garage and no they don't bastarding sell the minty loveliness
