AIBU to think that he should have cottoned on about 10 years ago, not now when it is so glaringly obvious as to be an embarrassment for everyone?

OP posts:
ghostyslovesheep · 21/07/2015 17:30

funny how countries with Muslim populations have elected more women into power than the enlightened west then...

WhetherOrNot · 21/07/2015 17:32

Have you never, ever travelled outside of your village?

Occasionally. Why?

OP posts:
MrsTerryPratchett · 21/07/2015 17:37

Then why on earth do you care OP? You can just carry on living in the 1950s in your bubble and none of this really affects you. Those of us with Muslims and/or immigrant rellies and friends and colleagues and neighbours will deal with 'integration' for you.

silkoversatin · 21/07/2015 17:38

We do have quite severe double standards it seems to me. As Chomsky's always said ~ the way stop terrorism is to stop indulging in it.

Interesting isn't it how when Prince Harry admitted he killed in Afghanistan – we're encouraged to see it as a commendable act of bravery. Do you suppose we'd think of a Taliban member who had killed a British solider in the same way? Or as a violent Islamist terrorist?

WhetherOrNot · 21/07/2015 17:40

Then why on earth do you care OP

Just because I live in the back of beyond doesn't mean I don't care about my country MrsTP. Stop being scathing and try being enlightening for a change!

OP posts:
DoraGora · 21/07/2015 17:41

You've never left your village? I thought DC making weird speeches was the extent of surprising.

YouTheCat · 21/07/2015 17:42

Oh ffs. Is this a wind up thread?

Wideopenspace · 21/07/2015 17:42

Because whilst I could accept there is not a solitary Muslim living in your village, if you have travelled outside of your village, you may well have 'met one'.

They look just like us....

ghostyslovesheep · 21/07/2015 17:43

lol I think the OP needs to make more effort to integrate

YouTheCat · 21/07/2015 17:44

I think the OP could do with integrating with reality.

WhetherOrNot · 21/07/2015 17:47

Don't have a go at me peeps - perhaps you ought to have a go at the media at the way they portray Muslims..........then those of us who are not enlightened can at last be learned (that's learn-ed not learned!).

OP posts:
MrsTerryPratchett · 21/07/2015 17:47

Stop being scathing and try being enlightening for a change! I can try being all sound-bitey and faux sincere like the shiny-faced arsehole if you would like.

WhetherOrNot · 21/07/2015 17:52

Why does this always happen on thread on MN? People who can't accept that other people see things differently always start having a 'go' at individuals like me.

By having a 'go' at me you are doing Muslims a complete disservice - you miss the opportunity to teach and you just get nasty.

OurDearLeader · 21/07/2015 18:00

Women currently hold 5.2 percent of Fortune 500 CEO roles. Those bloody Muslims, running all the Fortune 500 companies and sidelining women.

We might not be perfect, but in Pakistan only 1 in 5 women work compared to 4 in 5 men. 85% of the workforce is men. Women who do work earn 37% less than men. Women are forced into lower status jobs on lower wages with less rights. Pakistan is rated 134th out of 135 countries for women's economic participation. Less than half of the women in Pakistan can read and write. Only 1 in 5 girls from low income families have ever been to school. Women's access to justice is severely restricted. Domestic abuse is not a crime and 97% of women report having been on the receiving end of domestic violence. Many women are not allowed to associate freely and have curbs placed on their general liberty. I could go on.

To use the fact that women are underrepresented in the very top jobs of the private sector in this country to justify and deflect from that is like someone trying to say that a splinter and tree trunk are the same thing.

Women in Iran in the 1970's

David Cameron has finally admitted that "integration is not working"
MrsTerryPratchett · 21/07/2015 18:01

Read your OP. Read it and think about how it sounds to people who are immigrants, or who love, work with, live near and care about immigrants. Really think about that. Now, can you see why people are a bit peeved and don't want to gently talk to you about your bigotry. You start by saying. " it is so glaringly obvious as to be an embarrassment for everyone" and now it seems you know no Muslims, live near none and YOU think integration is an issue.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/07/2015 18:04

And Leader women are massively discriminated against in other countries too; South Africa (rape capital of the world) for example is broadly Christian. I say again, the issue is not Islam, it is the patriarchy.

merrymouse · 21/07/2015 18:06

Modest Christian swimwear for girls - it isn't as simple as Islam against the west.

David Cameron has finally admitted that "integration is not working"
RedDaisyRed · 21/07/2015 18:07

Yes the middle east is a mess and going backwards year by year. The picture of women in Iran in the 70s shows how far it has fallen (and yes I've been out of my City (London) and been to the middle east for work including Iran).

It depends what we mean by integration is not working. You certainly get white flight - particularly where I live and that becomes self perpetuating. We have always had some ghettos - jews in the East End, China Town etc but usually with each group gradually they move into other areas as they get more money and mix in pretty seamlessly generally benefiting from Western value as time goes on.

Islam is interesting today in the UK because people are going backwards and the rebellion of some of the young is a desire to adopt attitudes suitable for deserts 2000 years ago when women were owned. What fools they are so to be conned.

WhetherOrNot · 21/07/2015 18:09

Read the OP again MrsTP - DAVID CAMERON is an embarrassment to everyone. Doh !!

OP posts:
WhetherOrNot · 21/07/2015 18:11

live near none and YOU think integration is an issue.

MrsTP - DAVID CAMERON said integration is an issue. Not me. Stop jumping on your high horse and read read read what is written Hmm

OP posts:
Wideopenspace · 21/07/2015 18:12

The gender pay gap in the UK stands at around 19% - despite it being a 'developed' nation.

Out of 650 seats in the UK parliament, only 148 are held by women. Despite it being a 'developed' nation.

There are magazines in supermarkets with women in their underwear.

Absolutely the scale of the patriarchy in Pakistan is bigger and has serious consequences if you are female and happen to be born there - but the UK is far from getting it right.

Wideopenspace · 21/07/2015 18:13

I read the OP as meaning 'integration not working is an embarrassment for everyone'

DoraGora · 21/07/2015 18:13

If the book they're reading from is 1500 years old, and they're trying to read it literally, then, it's not surprising that they've stepped back in time. They wouldn't be the only peoples in that region to rock up from London, with a boat load of guns and carve out a homeland that hasn't existed for a thousand years. At least the caliphate's only been gone a couple of hundred years.

RedDaisyRed · 21/07/2015 18:17

Indeed. Invented by men pretending there is a God to keep women in check - plus ca change which is why feminism remains extremely important in both the West and East and yes fundamentalist Christian beliefs can be pretty bad too.
