to be furious at friend for taking DD to Harry Potter auditions without telling me?

So DD is 8 and obsessed with Harry Potter. Today my friend, her godmother, offered to have her for the day. I was surprised as she has never taken her out alone before but I thought it was a lovely idea. I asked what her plans were and she said she was unsure but they would do something "in town" (we live in London).

DD has just got home having spent the day queuing at the Excel centre for a Harry Potter audition!!! DD is shy and introverted and has never done a day's acting in her life and now she is all excited that she might be the next Emma Watson. I will have to spend days trying to delicately prepare her for the fact that is not going to happen.

Is this not a rather odd thing to do to somebody else's child without consulting the parents? I mean I am really cross but before I speak to me friend I wanted to check whether others would be equally cross. Am I overreacting and should I tell my friend it was an inconsiderate and irresponsible thing to build dreams in an 8 year old and expose them to rejection?

Nah, it turned nasty with cries of "burn the witch" in true MN fashion Grin

I bet Eddie Redmayne is lovely in RL - he looks like he would be lovely, doesn't he??

I think the thread attracted the MN Dementors. AIBU so often does.

Sallystyle · 19/07/2015 22:49

Well said Sirchen

Some of the replies here are fucking crazy.

Posters on AIBU trying to be all badass and kick the OP for no reason. Shocker.

If I was the OP I wouldn't have minded either, but I won't go calling the OP a misery guts and the rest of the shit that has been thrown around. It really does make you look pathetic, pathetic, bored and a little bit bitter.

WaggleBee · 19/07/2015 23:03

Eddie has lovely freckles. He's bound to be lovely.

Not this.

As has already been explained throughout the entire thread by the OP.

MN Dementors - love that Grin . It's a perfect description!

And...?

SrAssumpta · 20/07/2015 10:49

I think what's really going on here is that your DD enjoyed something you personally don't approve of and you're annoyed about that.

I totally agree

ArtichokeTagine · 20/07/2015 13:26

How does that sit with me saying that if she was interested in drama classes I would love to indulge that???

I honestly wonder about some of the people on AIBU. I can't fathom wanting to hurt complete strangers for no reason. It's... seriously bloody weird.

My wife took DD to audition and the forms explicitly had to be signed by a parent or legal guardian.

Unless your DD was discretely asked to go to another area within Excel and make an audition tape (as a girl in our group was), you did not make it through to the next round. The girl that was picked from our group was very tiny with elfin features and the thing to understand about casting is that they have a pretty good idea of what they're after and physicality is the overriding criteria, so it's not really about talent per se.

DD had a very long day, but despite the rejection had a fantastic time and met some new friends. I would not describe her as extrovert in any way, but she decided that this was something she wanted to do and perhaps your DD was the same. Not my idea of fun, but it takes all sorts....I'm sure your DD will also have enjoyed the day, bizarre as it sounds - and perhaps you can now lean on godmother for additional trips out - chessington, legoland, madame tussauds etc as penance for what I think is a minor transgression.

Auditions are taking place via agencies etc. this was an open casting call rather than an audition and more than likely the girl taking the part will not be one of these girls although there must be roles in the film for other kids. But it's a great way of generating publicity for the film...
