Washing hands after nappy change - MIL thread, sorry

My PIL are staying with us at the moment to look after DS, after I have had an operation. I appreciate is is very generous and lovely of them, and I am grateful.

However, MIL isn't washing her hands after pooey nappy changes. AIBU to be bothered by this? How can I get her to do this without basically implying she's being disgusting? We do have hand sanitizer at the nappy change station, but I found she as using that BEFORE she changed his nappy instead of after! DS is 8 months old, just for info, and my operation means I can't lift or carry him, or bend over/ kneel down, so I can't do it myself at the moment.

Plus sometimes when I open a very wet nappy I do touch urine

ATisketATasket · 15/07/2015 18:21

Read somewhere that under 2s carry cdiff naturally in their bowel...not harmful to them but easily transmissible. Not something you want if you have recently had an op.

Fairylea · 15/07/2015 18:21

Shock Shock

No more homemade food from friends houses for me either.....!

LamppostInWinter · 15/07/2015 18:21

Another eczema sufferer here, if I'd washed my hands after every nappy I'd have had useless shrivelled claws. We both seemed to have survived our vile ways.

God, I always wash after any nappy change! Surely it's just like washing after going to the toilet?! Am I just being overly hysterical about germs?

If she wants germs on her hands, whatever. But she's picking up DS, and putting in his dummy, and feeding him!

Your child your rules. Make sure she washes her hands in future. Can't believe so many people don't wash their hands.

captainproton · 15/07/2015 18:27

Yucky, germs are invisible, they may be in the air around the Poo when you expose the nappy. The germs could land on your hand. This is why d+v spreads like wildfire. The amount of poo germs you find on door handles, toilet flushes, taps, light switches is unbelievable. You don't see brown shit stains though, doesn't mean it's not there. Oh and close the lid of the loo when you flush, germs get thrown around your bathroom. Don't believe me why do you think the air smells of shit when you've been.

MargotLovedTom · 15/07/2015 18:28

Unless you're wiping your backside with your hand after a poo, you don't tend to have it on your hands then either but you still wash them surely?

I quite like the polio vaccine line a pp suggested.

todayisayesterdaystomorrow · 15/07/2015 18:29

I'm amazed at the amount of non washers!
So glad I don't eat homemade cakes... just for this reason.
Surely when you change a nappy your hands touch some of whatever you are wiping, the baby wipes wouldn't prevent poo or pee getting on your hands.

MargotLovedTom · 15/07/2015 18:30

Exactly captainproton - I was going to mention smelly farts and what tey consist of Wink.

Gruntfuttock · 15/07/2015 18:31

Shock I can't believe the number of people who don't wash their hands.
Do you at least always wash your hands before touching any food?

PotteringAlong · 15/07/2015 18:31

Another non- washer here. Look around at baby groups etc; non washing is the norm I think.

StarlingMurmuration · 15/07/2015 18:32

I'm going to get DP to talk to her . It's hard for me to be too bolshy when they're doing us such a huge favour.

I'm glad at least some of you are grossed out too, though. I also wash my hands after emptying the cat tray, even though I use the scoop and don't get poo on my hands. Surely it's just the same?

I'm surprised by the amount of non hand washers, mind you I'm shocked at the public toilet toilet mingers too!

Do you non washers wash before preparing food, going to the loo, etc?

StarlingMurmuration · 15/07/2015 18:34

And if I'm out at baby groups, I use a little pocket hand sanitizer, then wash properly at the first opportunity.

I am also a minger and never washed my hands after unless poo got on them. usually they were covered by a baby wipe so never saw an issue.

captainproton · 15/07/2015 18:40

I carry anti-bac hand gel in my nappy bag. Kids use it before eating when out and i use it when I've changed nappies. I also use it after being on public transport, as the hand rails are often grimy. I used to catch a lot of colds and once I started the hand gel after using the tube etc it really eased of.

My BIL doesn't even have soap at his house. And I hate going, I always take some with me! The skank has caught MRSA from somewhere and is currently suffering a gaping chest wound and a harsh course of ABs and some nasal thing. I've told DH I refuse to go to his place again unless he does a deep clean....

couldoutme · 15/07/2015 18:41

Yanbu op.

Say something like "I'll hold the baby while you wash your hands!"

Take the hand sanitizer away from the changing table - why have you got it there anyway?

Put up a huge sign "Now wash your hands please" just above changing table.

Olddear · 15/07/2015 18:43

Change dirty nappy, don't wash hands, touch baby, food, surfaces.....OMG!!! Tell me who you are in case I eat/drink anything you offer me!!! Vile.

Headinthedraw · 15/07/2015 18:44

Honestly I am not over the top about hygiene but this is surely basic stuff? It's the same as washing your hands after using the loo.Buy some hand sanitizer and stop transmitting poo germs.Bleugh.

AmberFool · 15/07/2015 18:46

This thread is going the way of shoes off/shoes on and toilet brush/no toilet brush threads! Grin

Am genuinely in shock that people don't wash hands after nappy change. Shock

yogababymum · 15/07/2015 18:49

ShockShockShock at the people who don't was their hands!!
