Washing hands after nappy change - MIL thread, sorry

StarlingMurmuration · 15/07/2015 17:58

My PIL are staying with us at the moment to look after DS, after I have had an operation. I appreciate is is very generous and lovely of them, and I am grateful.

However, MIL isn't washing her hands after pooey nappy changes. AIBU to be bothered by this? How can I get her to do this without basically implying she's being disgusting? We do have hand sanitizer at the nappy change station, but I found she as using that BEFORE she changed his nappy instead of after! DS is 8 months old, just for info, and my operation means I can't lift or carry him, or bend over/ kneel down, so I can't do it myself at the moment.

Unless I got poo on my hands after changing a nappy I wouldn't wash them either. We all live to tell the tale. We all have guts of steel in this house.

I don't wash my hands just before I eat either. I do when I am cooking but many times I cook earlier on during the day and don't wash my hands just before I eat. My cup cakes are all made with lovely clean hands ;)

Tequilashotfor1 · 15/07/2015 19:13

Yes and yes.

If I'm changing nappy And I touch the pooh if I do of course I wash them.

I also am very particular with hand washing and cross contamination whilst cooking belive it it not.

My eldest is 20 and the worst she has had is chicken pox. There is a joke in this house that we have guts of leather...

NorahBone · 15/07/2015 19:13

This thread has completely dissolved the residual guilt I had about never washing my hands before a nappy change (like the leaflets tell you to).

Almostfifty · 15/07/2015 19:13

I managed to give my newborn an infection in his tummy button as I didn't wash my hands between changing his brother's dirty nappy and changing his.

I always washed my hands when I changed a nappy, but doing one after the other I never gave it a thought. I was mortified.

The5DayChicken · 15/07/2015 19:14

Loving the outrage on this thread Grin

Seriously though, it's quite presumptuous of some of you to assume that people who aren't washing their hands after a 'tidy' nappy change don't wash them before preparing food either.

StarlingMurmuration · 15/07/2015 19:15

I wash before I do any food prep and after too, especially if it's raw meat. In fact, if its raw meat, I wash my hands throughout the prep.

Omg at all the dirty articles on this thread.

Goldmandra · 15/07/2015 19:20

My friends who don't make their children wash their hands after using the loo because it's only a bit of wee, don't wash their own hands after changing nappies, aren't careful with raw meat, etc reckon they don't cause any issues either but it's amazing how many vomiting bugs their children seem to pick up at school Hmm

Tequilashotfor1 · 15/07/2015 19:20

op I would just count your blessings you have nice PILs. Mine are hellish and have never helped out or changed a nappy. Unless it's an Absolute shit volcano I'd pick my battles.

One day when your mopping up piss and pooh from a well meaning toddler that has it all over their face and you have to look pleased because they 'aimed' for the potty ,you will look back on this and laugh hysterically .

Skiptonlass · 15/07/2015 19:22

It doesn't matter if you can't see poo on your hands, for gods sake! Don't you all understand that bacteria and viruses are not visible to the naked eye?
Bacteria and viruses can and do get into your hands whilst handling the nappy, regardless of what you see on your hands.
Flipping heck, it's no wonder half the country goes down with norovirus every year. WASH YOUR GODDAMN HANDS after the loo, when you come in from being outdoors, after nappy changes and before good prep.

Mucky pups, the lot of you!

Cherryblossomsinspring · 15/07/2015 19:23

My baby frantically grabs her dirty pooy crotch the second I get her nappy off as I bat her hands away, shove toys in them and scream no no don't touch. Then before I can grab a wipe with my one free hand (that isn't free cos it should be frantically starting the clean up) she has her hand in her mouth. It's a battle. And now I just sigh when she gets that hand near her mouth and I can't get it in time. I've seen so much gross stuff with the babies my standards have lowered. I'm very careful with hand washing when the baby is tiny but that relaxes a bit as we go on. Last winter I had two in nappies and with the weather and the washing my hands were so cracked and bleeding I couldn't bend my fingers to actually change a nappy at one point. Incredibly painful. Now I'm strategic. I change nappies in the morning, clean up after pup and do the litter tray before doing one big hand wash.

It's a good thing she uses the hand sanatiser beforehand!

But yuck I can't stand not washing my hands after nappy changes (and wiping down the mat too) so I'm with you, I'm obsessive about anti bac lotion if we're out too...

hotfuzzra · 15/07/2015 19:28

Grin at all the discust on this thread!
I think using a toilet - involving touching door handles, toilet lids and/or seats, flushes, soap dispensers etc - which has been used by unknown others (ok often family, but workmen, visitors etc) whose hygiene you cannot verify, is totally different to opening a nappy, not touching its content, and not touching anything gross.
Do all you hysterical hand washers wipe down toilet door handles, seats, flushes and soap dispensers before and after use?! Grin

fwiw I do wash after I use the toilet, plus I wash hands before handling foods.
Oh and the PP who said she hopes us non washers catch something horrid is more vile than not washing our hands. Poo to you, missy.

MagicMojito · 15/07/2015 19:28

Im in the non hand washer camp.

I wash my hands constantly whilst cooking/baking and randomly throughout the day, but nappy changing i just give them a going over with a clean wipe.

I don't personally think I'm that skanky Grin

reni1 · 15/07/2015 19:29

ShowMe I'm fairly certain someone who handles somebody else's poo without washing does not wash after own poo.

TheEagle · 15/07/2015 19:30

So if you took your baby to the GP and they changed your baby's nappy during the examination, would you expect them to wash their hands before typing up a prescription or answering the telephone?

I still fail to see how it's any different to washing your hands after you've been to the toilet.

gamerchick · 15/07/2015 19:30

After reading some of the habits on here in various threads I'm not surprised at this one at all.

I like the polio idea OP.

Dontstepinthecowpat · 15/07/2015 19:33

To counteract those who don't wash their hands and who don't get D+V - I wash hands after nappies, toilet, bin emptying, blowing nose and all manner of activities involving bacteria and we haven't had any V+D either, so I don't think you have super immune systems because you are mingers.

We live on a farm and have friends whose child (just) survived the devastating effects of E-Coli, hand hygiene is non negotiable in our house.

Gruntfuttock · 15/07/2015 19:33

hotfuzzra "all you hysterical hand washers"

No one's hysterical. Hmm Washing hands after doing certain tasks and before doing others, is simply automatic to some people, but not to others it seems.

SanityClause · 15/07/2015 19:35

OP OF COURSE SHE SHOULD WASH HER HANDS> And so should the rest of you, dirty skanky disgusting fuckers that you are!

^^ This ^^^

skipyon but don't you understand that exposure to germs builds a good immune system? Constant hand washing stops this build up.

None of us are exactly walking round with poo hands. But bugger me, if I washed my hands after every tiny exposure to germs, I'd be doing it all day. After opening evey door, after touching the pelican crossing button, after using my phone, after touching cutlery, or pushing a buggy...

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 15/07/2015 19:41

theEagle every GP that has done exaimination has always washed hands after, they all have sinks in room.

You lot that dont wash hands wait until you have to purchase thread worms tablets £8 for 4tablets!
