Washing hands after nappy change - MIL thread, sorry

StarlingMurmuration · 15/07/2015 17:58

My PIL are staying with us at the moment to look after DS, after I have had an operation. I appreciate is is very generous and lovely of them, and I am grateful.

However, MIL isn't washing her hands after pooey nappy changes. AIBU to be bothered by this? How can I get her to do this without basically implying she's being disgusting? We do have hand sanitizer at the nappy change station, but I found she as using that BEFORE she changed his nappy instead of after! DS is 8 months old, just for info, and my operation means I can't lift or carry him, or bend over/ kneel down, so I can't do it myself at the moment.

smoosh so you was your hands every time you handle money? How long do you leave it? Do you hand over you £2.35 then make a beeline for the toilets?

Plateofcrumbs · 15/07/2015 20:08

I'm amazed that all the hand washers are shocked, as I have never seen people at baby groups, play dates etc run off and wash their hands after a nappy change.

And did you do this from day 1 in hospital? I could barely stand up for days let alone stagger down a hospital corridor to the bathroom every time I changed a nappy. A wipe and a squirt of hand gel seems more than adequate to me.

Lovinglife45 · 15/07/2015 20:08

I always say no to homemade cake at work.

PressEscape · 15/07/2015 20:09

My stomach turns at the thought of not washing hands after changing a nappy.

I'm genuinely appalled at you dirty, unhygienic people. I hope I never have to shake hands with you.

OhEmGeee · 15/07/2015 20:09

Another nurse here so of course I wash my hands. I'm guessing the people who don't have had to do the never done the light trick (which all HCP will know what I'm on about).

00100001 · 15/07/2015 20:09

Why do you have to wash your hands before changing the nappy? Confused

00100001 · 15/07/2015 20:09

Do you pre-washers wash your hands before going to the loo???

StarlingMurmuration · 15/07/2015 20:10

I did it from day one, and I was in hospital for 7 nights. There was a sink in our bay of four beds, and then I was moved to my own room which also had a sink.

You wash your hands after you touch your pets Smoosh?

God, considering the amount of times I touch my pets I would never have time to do anything else if I washed my hands every time I touched them.

And gasp... I even like them licking my face! (not my mouth)

00100001 · 15/07/2015 20:11

FWIW I know how tonwash hands properly, and have worked in hospitals, and I did anti-bac between patients and hand washed properly every 4-5 patients and after messy jobs etc

I just really can't be fagged with washing my hands every ten mintes

NancyDroop · 15/07/2015 20:11

OhEmGee what is the light trick?

StarlingMurmuration · 15/07/2015 20:11

And I had a broken coccyx, severe SPD, horrible forceps damage and anaemia from blood loss. I didn't want MRSA or a sick baby in addition to that.

Its a black light.

You get asked wash your hands the "normal" way. The. They shine this light only yiu to siiw all the areas you missed (between fingers, backs of hands, wrists, thumbs s c) then you get shown how to wash your hands properly.

I hope all you feverish hand washers wash correctly every time!

ASettlerOfCatan · 15/07/2015 20:15

Wash hands or gel here always. I don't understand the people saying its diff than if you've been yourself? You are still wiping someones arse if its yours or a kids??

TheEagle · 15/07/2015 20:15

Yes washed hands from Day 1 with all 3 dcs.

Especially with the DTs in the NICU. Don't think they'd be too fond of non-handwashers in there.

Olddear · 15/07/2015 20:16

It's hardly being 'a hysterical hand washer' if you wash hands after dealing with a soiled nappy! I really thought everyone washed their hands after dealing with faeces. Obvs not.....

One of the most disturbing posts I've ever read on here. You are NOT FIT to work in a hospital.

In fact I think you are probably making it up as you go along.

PLUtoPlanet · 15/07/2015 20:19

I can't believe how many people think it's okay if they can't see anything, or if they've used a baby wipe.

There are plenty of times when I can still smell shit after I've washed my hands, so I have to have another go, and scrub under my nails.

Ugh!

Antibacterial gel doesn't kill superbugs. So you have probably passed those on between patients a few times.

People like you actually make me feel violent.

Rollermum · 15/07/2015 20:20

I am by no means a clean freak but am also shocked at all the non hand washers. I just don't feel right if I don't.

Totally agree with what Skiptonlass said about visibility of germs.

I wash my hands after every nappy, before touching food, when I come in from outside (because London bus poles are minging, you can feel the chicken grease in places!), and after touching money after seeing a programme about what people do with coins. Oh and after touching animals but I don't have pets so this is easy.
