AIBU?

Are my dresses unreasonable for the school run?

I wore the black dress yesterday (see pics) and got a filthy stare off a woman pushing a buggy on the school pick up. I don't think I had my kids with me at that point. I later wore the dress to a Christian youth group, in fact I wore it to the office earlier the same day and it seemed fine. Today I had both kids on the way to school, I was wearing the dark red dress with a black cardigan. I got another long glare from the same woman, it was her staring that made me realise it was her again! I wouldn't wear the dark red dress to the office and I have pinned it to make it less low on the bust. They are both soft jersey dresses. But are they really that bad and does it make a difference whether I'm a mother or on the school run as to whether these outfits are appropriate?

Worras quote somes this thread up perfectly.

The dresses are basic and I can't see them gathering interest in a positive or negative way.

As for the Muslim comment, well that made you sound more like a tool than the previous post.

Wear what you like on the school run and day to day. No one cares.

Carpet needs a hoover, too - perhaps some bluebirds will fly in the window and do it, if OP twirls her skirts a bit more?

I work with quite a few muslim women. Better put by polo neck jumper on.

Look, the dresses are fine. I see women on the school run wearing low cut spaghetti-top with shorts onesies! Anything goes!

Ooh merry that sounds nice, I would pay for one of those, especially with bits of crystallised ginger in. My invented ice cream would be marscapone, peach and honey.

Did the ( possibly) Muslim lady call you an evil whore of satan OP? Cos that's what them there Muslims do you know!!!

The dresses are fine, the women in my office wear far more revealing dresses.

Yup, definitely bits of crystallised ginger. I'm thinking along the lines of chunky monkey (why did ben and jerry's stop that, it was my favourite?).

Hopping, that sounds nice, but maybe a bit sweet. Can we add some raspberry?

Go out tomorrow draped in your St George's flag and see if she gives you the stink-eye. If simply wearing your national flag, which apparently it is fine to do if you're a minority but not if you're British and that makes you a racist wtf is up with THAT etc etc etc is not enough, you could get your children to carry their gollywogs that they collect and love and that you have fond memories of your nanna collecting and are a part of British childhood and also your coloured DP also loves and he thinks we are all mad and he is laughing because you call him your jamaican chocolate boy. And you could walk along with your cleavage out, eating gollywog marmalade, singing Baa Baa Christian Sheep until she GETS USED TO IT by god.

I rather like the wallpaper...

I broadly agree with gingerfox. I would probably wonder about close fitting jersey in hot weather though. Isn't it sweaty?

You must have been looking at her to notice the "glaring". She' was probably wondering what you were "glaring" at? Challenge her to a "glaring" competition maybe?

I didn't want to mention the Muslim thing initially, I've never had anyone have an issue about what I wear from friend or stranger who was Muslim (or other religions) but I also don't believe it was jealousy - that's why I mentioned it, perhaps thinking I was dressed inappropriately which is what I was worried about. I've also being called a prostitute by Christian street preachers so am aware other religious people can judge on appearance, despite me being a church goer myself. I have enough of an interest in other cultures and religions to know modesty is much more important to some faiths than others and perhaps I was overstepping that and dressed disrespectfully - I don't know which is why I asked if they were unreasonable. I didn't ask how I looked otherwise.

I'm sadly not tall and don't think I look that slim. I don't have Facebook or post pictures online, I had trouble taking the pics to make sure it showed a more truthful picture, the potentially obscene cleavage! I'm just unsure of myself like a lot of woman when it comes to what looks ok. And probably like a lot of men my husband isn't that interested in giving his opinion on my outfits.

I definitely didn't imagine the stare, it was prolonged and involved her turning her head to keep it up. And while we shouldn't ever give a crap what people think or judge us for, it does happen - the woman who asked if I was my daughter's sister had seen us earlier that day and made that judgement after a short encounter. It may not be a long or negative judgement but people do create little pictures base on tiny snapshots. Although I'm also sure lots of people don't bother so much to think about people they see out and about too.

I do sometimes get stares because I look much younger than I am, apparently. Asked the other day if I was my five year old's sister.

Well that doesn't make sense - if you get stared at, how does the person staring know how old you are? Confused Does that mean every older sister out with their younger sibling gets stared at everywhere they go? Confused But I know how you feel - recently I was asked if I were my five year old's daughter.

I have no witty reply re the racism, other than Biscuit

And re the dresses - Maybe she was thinking you're mad wearing dark colours on a hot day; or that you're the one walking along with a snotty face, or even that your arse is enormous (since that's the only view you didn't treat us to Grin)

If somebody was staring at me so obviously that they had to turn their head to keep staring, I would be inclined to ask them if there was a problem. Maybe she thought she knew you?

Why have you posted this? I don't understand why you care what anyone thinks about your clothes unless this was a "look at me and how pretty I look AND I do GOOD WORKS as a Christian" whilst getting in a bit of Muslim bashing type thread.

Wonderful waste of time reading this. I'm off to sports day now, wearing a rainbow stroppy top (in support of gay people - which I hope Really offends you) and a cut down pair of jeans making me look a tad scruffy.
