Game of Thrones - I'm not watching any more

It's just gone too far for me. A good book series is ruined for.

Where the Stannis Baratheon storyline can go from here is anyone's guess...

I disagree that we've seen worse than that, just in terms if betrayal there had been nothing nastier. Killing your brother or a rival family is one thing, murdering your child? Quite another

Morloth · 08/06/2015 22:21

I stopped watching about halfway through season 3.

It is a boring show and it knows it which is why there is so much violence because the violence is the only thing carrying it now.

Goldendandelion · 08/06/2015 22:21

I'm not sure why you would think Stannis was one of the good guys when he used the magic shadow creature to murder his brother.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 08/06/2015 22:24

Golden But he knows the difference between 'less' and 'fewer' so we all thought he can't be all bad, right? Wink

LaChatte · 08/06/2015 22:25

Not forgetting the paedophile in the brother.

I have managed through the rest of the series but this episode really upset me.

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/06/2015 22:25

A bad end for Shireen was hinted at in the last book, by Val. All that talk about how wildings handled greyscale. The lack of Val annoyed me for that reason, that issue was clearly going to become a major story arc. If I recall correctly she tells Jon Snow wildings believe greyscale can't be cured and they burn them all, even the children. Could be wrong on that detail though.

LaChatte · 08/06/2015 22:26

Brothel, not brother.

MrsNextDoor · 08/06/2015 22:29

DH just fast forwarded a certain smoky scene...and I've NEVER seen him do that on GOT.

I don't like it but he always watches it...he's got a strong stomach but that was too much.

LokiBear · 08/06/2015 22:32

I didn't like the way that Stannis manipulated Shireen into telling him he must do whatever it takes. They can't possibly use that as justification, can they? They have essentially killed of Stannis for me. He was one of my favourites but I can't engage with his story line now.

LokiBear · 08/06/2015 22:33

Off^

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/06/2015 22:35

That was probably the point, Loki. It closes the book so to speak on Stannis ever getting his backside on the iron throne, rather more swiftly and neatly than it will be done in the books.

LucilleBluth · 08/06/2015 22:47

Oh come on, shaking and crying. Stannis was always a twat, he's just shot himself in the foot.

This is fiction, it is meant to confront uncomfortable truths, it is designed to make make you uncomfortable........and anyway the most offensive part of tonight's episode was Daenerys's crap CGI dragon flight!

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/06/2015 22:52

I cannot believe she just got on that dragon and flew off, leaning her defenders stranded.

Truly the worst Queen ever.

MistressChalk · 08/06/2015 22:55

Lucille I agree with you in any other form of fiction or art that yes it's there to push boundaries. But books can be put down and it's still very different to actually watching something. At university we studied a certain book where we had to write a disclaimer before reading saying we agreed to it, it was purely optional and we were told it would be tough. Some people left because they couldn't take it and some tried and got very upset. I did finish it because I was interested in the psychology and history behind it. GOT contains very similar themes but the difference is that this is just pulp. There's no deeper meaning or philosophy behind it, it's just there to shock, excite and upset.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 08/06/2015 22:55

Lucille I think people are allowed to be disturbed or moved however they see fit by fiction Hmm I personally found that far more disturbing than pretty much any other scene in GOT, but others may remain unmoved. If anything it was because they didn't show it that I found it so bad

Agreed the dragon looked naff at times, though Grin

Derailing slightly, I fancy Sam.

Just needed to get that out.

Thank you. Weight off my chest.

MeltchettsLovelyMoustache · 08/06/2015 22:58

It's shit storytelling too. Why build up that relationship to just ruin it like that?

LadyDeadpool · 08/06/2015 23:02

I knew it was coming but expected Queen Seleyse to sacrifice her ddidn't stop me from crying for the first time during the TV series I've cried atthe books but that was definitely a book spoiler and that scene with Davos first, he knew too. Won't stop me watching though.

trufflesnout · 08/06/2015 23:03

No, it was good storytelling. They built up their relationship to make you think Stannis had turned a new leaf - he always was a twat, but he was a twat who valued his lineage. So now he's obsessed with the Red Lady, not even his love for his own heir goes unchallenged. That's a Big Deal for "my lineage is pure" Stannis. It's all being put towards Stannis the big nutter, ready for the next arc.

I don't see the point of announcing you aren't going to watch anymore tbh. So you'll never see the consequences of what happened this episode, which is odd because since you didn't like the episode you'll presumably like the consequences for Stannis later down the line.

Cooroo · 08/06/2015 23:09

Not a new story line - Agamemnon sacrificed his daughter, Iphigenia, to ensure good winds to carry the fleet to Troy.

A sad and shocking episode, but the highlight of my week. I'll be sad after next week when DP, DD and I won't share any more GOT on a Monday night.

Fromparistoberlin73 · 08/06/2015 23:13

Mistress - curious what book ?

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 08/06/2015 23:14

Glad i wasnt the only one to spot how bad the flying away cgi was! Grin

JoffreyBaratheonFirstofHisName · 08/06/2015 23:15

I thought it was better than the book. Shireen was better realised as a character, than in the books, too so I really cared about her and that's the precise character GRRM needed to slaughter at this point - one you care about but who is essentially, expendable. Not that he writes non-expendable characters... It's likely what has happened is going to drive some Davos-related plot-line, I'd imagine.

It also says something about the nature of religious fanaticism. Interesting that when it came to it, Stannis was way more nuts even than Selyse.

Kudos to the little girl who played Shireen, too. She did a brilliant job - made her so loveable.

MildDrPepperAddiction · 08/06/2015 23:22

Really not sure how to take the series now. I like it and am frustrated by it in equal measure.
