is it part of his image or something?

I just dont get it.

SuburbanRhonda · 31/05/2015 21:09

Didn't he once claim to be "70% straight"? Hmm

I can't imagine why anyone would think he's funny. His "comedy" is based on caricature, not humour.

SilverBirch2015 · 31/05/2015 21:10

Grown-up well balanced men, (gay, bi, or straight) have no need to validate their sexuality publicly by conforming to a set of behaviours to prove to others who they are.

It's also a fairly endearing part of his personality IMO.

Alisvolatpropiis · 31/05/2015 21:10

He just is, isn't he? Camp I mean. Might ham it up for the cameras a bit but I just thought that was his personality.

I agree that he of all people in the public would be very unlikely to hide if he was gay.

Hollywood actors and pop stars as named on this thread are a whole different kettle of fish when it comes down to this "beard" thing.

Arsenic · 31/05/2015 21:11

Yes, looking at this thread it's no wonder that it's still hard for teenagers to come out

Yes indeed Nerr.

Maybe there's some kind of wormhole to 1963 that's opened up?

lbnblbnb · 31/05/2015 21:13

Is he gay or straight, camp or not? Don't know, don't care.
BUT I know someone who has spent some time with him and his (ex)wife - can't be more specific or it will out me - and he was cruel and derogatory to her in front of lots of people. Spoke to her like she was an idiot.
That put me right off him.

theQuibbler · 31/05/2015 21:14

In the interview, Walliams also refutes the suggestion that his effeminate manner means he is gay.
He said: "I think about it because I am effeminate. Am I gay? Then I so love being with women and I so love women's bodies and all that and I think 'Well no I can't be'.
"Sometimes I think it would be simpler if I was (gay) because everyone thinks I am. If I was gay I would just get on with it. I love women. I love being around women I find them incredibly intoxicating. I have never had that feeling for a man."

Well, he identifies as being attracted to women, not men. I assume he knows what he's talking about, what with it being his life and all.

ImperialBlether · 31/05/2015 21:14

Undoubtedly do you think David Walliams is pretending to be straight, then? If you do, can you please give your reasons why?

iHAVEtogetoutofhere · 31/05/2015 21:14

Yy to 'something of the night about him'.

wonder if he has LOADS of dirt on Cowell?

that would be smart of him, if he does Grin

Bannerstaying · 31/05/2015 21:14

Think he sometimes goes too far, it's like the olden days when men would make the same type of comments towards women they wouldn't get away with it so easily now. Also dislike the women on BGT copying by making similar comments towards the women occasionally.

Pico2 · 31/05/2015 21:15

We have the CD of David Walliams fading the BFG. We've only listened to the beginning of it, but I didn't recognise him reading it at first because he doesn't sound like his usual camp self. So I'm confident that he can turn it off when he wants to.

I don't like to see some of the ways he behaves towards other men at times. As siblingrevelryagain said, it wouldn't be acceptable to behave
I've that towards a woman.

Alisvolatpropiis · 31/05/2015 21:15

That's interesting, lbn.

Comedians are an odd bunch, all that forced jollity so often seems to hide flawed characters. Some more seriously flawed than others..

undoubtedly · 31/05/2015 21:15

Oh that's not nice Hmm

I don't really get his humour, but as he doesn't barge through my front door and insist on acting out comedy skits in my kitchen, I tend to adopt a live-and-let-live attitude Hmm

fascicle · 31/05/2015 21:17

editthis
I think he's completely talentless and acts camp to make him seem more interesting.

Comedian, actor, swimmer of the Channel and the Thames, drama writer and a decent writer of children's books - you call that 'completely talentless'?

I think he's just being himself.

undoubtedly · 31/05/2015 21:17

Imperial I was referring to the apparently common requirement in showbiz for a "beard", rather than to David's sexual orientation specifically....

undoubtedly · 31/05/2015 21:18

Russell Brand is also camp but apparently not being accused of using "beards" and being in the closet...

FiveExclamations · 31/05/2015 21:19

David Walliams has always clearly been gay, based on what? Just his campness, or other things? As far as I can tell he might be gay, might be straight, bi, asexual, poly, pan or trans (just looked them up) I'm trying to understand what makes you certain.

lbnblbnb · 31/05/2015 21:21

They hadn't been married for long when my friend saw this behaviour. I am afraid I have always found him smug and arrogant and that confirmed my view.

SaucyJack · 31/05/2015 21:23

I think the camp thing is just an affection. I find him funny- or at least I certainly did the first 200 times.....

I don't actually get the impression he's gay at all tho. There is an leering sexuality hiding underneath the camp act. Maybe it's some sort of defense mechanism.

He reminds me of a friend of mine. He's well into his BDSM (with female subs), but to speak to he's as camp as a row of tents.

Something's afoot at the Circle K.

NorbertDentressangle · 31/05/2015 21:25

Maybe it's a clever ruse and he's actually as straight as they come but thinks it's cool to be ambiguous about his sexuality hence playing up the camp persona and being illusive when questioned about it.

NorbertDentressangle · 31/05/2015 21:27

Oh, and whoever mentioned Russell Brand.... Russell isn't gay or straight....he's just in love with himself

blondegirl73 · 31/05/2015 21:27

I actually thought that his wife was miserable and very unsupportive on the programme when he swam the Thames.

I used to see him all the time round my old office about ten years ago and I was always surprised how handsome he is in the flesh!

My son (he's 5) thought the prime minister is David Walliams.

Caravanoflove · 31/05/2015 21:30

Bradley Cooper is gay? I was holding out for him, shame.

editthis · 31/05/2015 21:30

fascicle Yup. Comedian? Actor? Hmm Well, I suppose it's a matter of opinion. I'm afraid I don't rate his writing, either. I'm of the opinion that he piggybacked his way to fame on Matt Lucas's talents, though I have to admit he seems to work hard.

However, he raised a lot of money for charity swimming the Channel and the Thames and I concede that that was a Good Thing to do. Not sure how much of it was raw "talent" – since that's what we're disputing – so much as bloody hard work, though

antimatter · 31/05/2015 21:31

I love his books, they speak to boys in a way they want to read them again and again.
I hope he will carry on writing and can't wait for his next book Grin

Rivercam · 31/05/2015 21:33

I was surprised when DW got married because I assumed he was gay. Wasn't his dampness one of the reasons his wife left him, which I thought was a bit unfair, because campness has always been part of his personality.

I thing with DW, BGT would be a much duller show.
