I love American culture so much and would love to be American, I visit every year and have lots of family who live in America.

I was thinking that since we can't be alone in the world (for various reasons) we would have to join the U.S.

Aibu to think we should have a second referendum to join America. Grin

what makes you think they'd want you?

like what is in it for them?

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 24/05/2015 18:51

Um, no.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 24/05/2015 18:51

Nah, the US can be lovely in some states and horrendously backward in others.
No thanks!

GreenTeaMummy · 24/05/2015 18:51

Americans love the British.

Eh? I can't figure out if you're being serious or not.

If you are: NO NO & NO

Also the U.S. Won't like us anymore if we're not in the EU.

HTH

GreenTeaMummy · 24/05/2015 18:54

This is obviously not serious. But on a serious point I would want Britain to join America.

stargirl1701 · 24/05/2015 18:54

Dear God, no!

The gun/violence culture, the Healthcare situation, the lack of state help for the poor, the schools, higher education fees, the inequality, I could go on!

Nice place to visit, but not to live.

TiggieBoo · 24/05/2015 18:55

No thanks.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 24/05/2015 18:56

I'd rather have EU employment conditions than US anyday (holidays etc).

MadisonMontgomery · 24/05/2015 18:56

Would we have to eat american chocolate though??

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 24/05/2015 18:56

Is that the same US where people are often bankrupted by healthcare bills?

fortunately · 24/05/2015 18:56

Christ no, you're a nutter.

TalkinPeace · 24/05/2015 18:57

I'm American and British.

chibi · 24/05/2015 18:57

why not join with russia instead

free gas for life

Stanky · 24/05/2015 18:58

They don't have proper maternity leave/pay do they? I really don't like their attitude to guns either.

Floralnomad · 24/05/2015 18:59

I think you would be in a minority with your opinion OP ,

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 24/05/2015 18:59

Well that's sealed it Madison. As well as tiny amounts of annual/maternity leave and being bankrupted by healthcare bills, we would have to put up with the filth that is American chocolate and all their disgusting HFCS filled processed food.

What exactly is it that the OP considers so good about the US to overcome all of the downsides?

TalkinPeace · 24/05/2015 18:59

America : the country with no maternity leave at all
America : the country with thousands of gun related deaths every year
America : the country with the most dysfunctional healthcare system there is
America : the most racist country in the developed world

Thanks but the EU is a much better bet, even with its problems.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 24/05/2015 19:01

No, just no. I love Americans, I enjoy their popular culture, but I have no wish to be part of the US.

Stanky · 24/05/2015 19:03

When they sing their national anthem in front of a flag, they really mean it. It makes me feel a bit sick for some reason. It's just too sugary and cheesy, like their food regulations. I like it that in the EU, food manufacturers are not allowed to put any old site into it.

Plonkysaurus · 24/05/2015 19:06

Anywhere that has the convention of putting your hand over your heart is a bit scary.
Anywhere that sells guns in supermarkets, still uses the death penalty and encourages people to take part in eating competitions is a bit scary.

On the other hand I quite like burgers. And they have good national parks. But they have shit humour.

Fluffcake · 24/05/2015 19:09

Seriously???
No maternity leave, pro-life mutters, religious extremists in main stream politics and lots and lots of guns.
I love the states too but I wouldn't want yo live thereGrin

iklboo · 24/05/2015 19:11

They have exceptionally lax rules on food additives & animal welfare (compared to here / EU). And bloody corn syrup in practically everything.

XiCi · 24/05/2015 19:11

I cannot think of anything worse. Even thinking about it for one second puts the fear of God into me.
