I love American culture so much and would love to be American, I visit every year and have lots of family who live in America.

I was thinking that since we can't be alone in the world (for various reasons) we would have to join the U.S.

Aibu to think we should have a second referendum to join America. Grin

America : the country that still allows prophylactic antibiotics for farm animals.
America : the country that has zero welfare standards for farm animals : free range eggs are practically unheard of
America : the country where local schools are funded from local taxes so if your area becomes poor, so do your schools.
America : the country that stops you voting if you've been convicted of a crime.
America : the country that allows politicians to gerrymander districts.

SecretNutellaFix · 24/05/2015 19:12

If you want to live in America, move to America.

No way would I want the UK to become in any way linked to the USA permanently.

Andcake · 24/05/2015 19:12

God no no no no! The worst idea ever. Racist, sexist, mad religious nuts and have the death penalty.
Working for an American company they take themselves far too seriously, dress badly, very superficial and are pompous.
Also there is lots of crap American culture ( as well as the good bits) give me France, Italy, Spain over them every time.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 24/05/2015 19:14

They are very very different to us on a range of really important issues.

I want to stay part of the EU but even if we left, join with the states? Just NO. I mean, I doubt they'd want us either Grin

What is it you love about the country?

The whole religion being so prominent / execution / gun stuff / some states basically banning abortion / healthcare / police brutality kind of is a bit offputting. I mean not that we're great but we're used to us, you know?

KatharineH · 24/05/2015 19:15

Where America leads, Britain follows.

A lot of British people, and our political leaders, look to the USA for ideas and principles. Goodness knows why!

Some might argue that we would have more political power to rule ourselves than if we continue to do as Europe dictates. But not me, I am in favour of staying in the EU. Wink

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 24/05/2015 19:15

I would prefer to become part of Scandinavia, if we're being given the choice Grin

I mean there are problems in the different countries there too but on the whole that's the direction I'd prefer to head!

BarbarianMum · 24/05/2015 19:15

How exciting. Can't wait to belong to a country where any idiot can own a gun but where there is constant pressure to relieve woman of bodily autonomy. And luckily I'm not male and black so very unlikely to be shot by the police.

Renniehorta · 24/05/2015 19:17

I went to the US for the 1st time in 2013 when my DS married an American girl. I thought that I would like it. I hated it. The food was awful either too sweet or just tasteless. I was horrified by the rural poverty. The difference between the haves and have nots is just horrifying. I felt unsafe due to the prevalence of guns and quite frankly bored.

Bored through the lack of culture, the sheer inability to just walk somewhere interesting.

I could not bear to live in a state of the USA.

CrystalMcPistol · 24/05/2015 19:17

Great place to visit, great place to leave.

What exactly do you love so much??

Renniehorta · 24/05/2015 19:18

I agree. I think I would love to live in a Scandinavian country.

CrystalMcPistol · 24/05/2015 19:20

Would it mean there'd be increased UFO sighting in the God fearin' state of England?

(I'm assuming it would only be England signing up, Scotland (and Wales) would tell you to get tae. NI might be willing, they love a bit of bible thumping)

Andcake · 24/05/2015 19:26

God I forgot about gun ownership. Even more hell no.

silveroldie2 · 24/05/2015 19:26

I definitely want us to leave the EU but not to join the USA - what a vile idea [shudders]. The UK has no need to lump itself in with another country, especially America.

IamTheWhoreofBabylon · 24/05/2015 19:32

Haven't you been here spouting this crap before
I cannot think of much worse than the UK becoming any more like the US

Stanky · 24/05/2015 19:42

I like being part of the EU. I love to visit America. My db has married an American, and will be moving to Texas soon. It has taken over a year to sort the visa, and that's so far... I wish that the US government would let him in sooner, as they truly love each other, and it breaks my heart that they can't be together because of some guy and his stamp.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 24/05/2015 19:43

I can't think of much worse.

They're like the Tories on acid over there.

Loads of religious crap, no NHS, guns everywhere, disgusting food, the death penalty and no culture. You must be off your trolley to want to be part of such a foul set-up.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 24/05/2015 19:46

I'm with you OP.

I love America.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 24/05/2015 19:46

"They're like the Tories on acid over there. "

lol excellent turn of phrase Grin

CrystalMcPistol · 24/05/2015 19:50

As annoying as the political parties in the UK are I'd find it knuckle chewingly head fucking to have to deal with the constant squabbling between the Democrats and Republicans on a daily basis.

Tories on acid is right, and that just describes the moderates!

What benefits exactly do people envision in the hypothetical event of the UK joining the US?

Patapouf · 24/05/2015 19:54

Stanky
When they sing their national anthem in front of a flag, they really mean it. It makes me feel a bit sick for some reason. Grin

The only thing that could possibly be worse than leaving the EU would be joining the U.S, even with Hillary as prez. America: where the only thing worse than being a woman is being a black male. Fuck that.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 24/05/2015 19:54

Well when you say "people" that's 2 posters Grin

I think it's to do with eating TV dinners while wearing mickey mouse ears.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 24/05/2015 19:57

Well TBF it's not such great shakes being a black male here either. And our police have quite good form for killing them in disproportionate numbers as well, it's just ours are hampered by the lack of firearms.

But yes the problems with racism in the states are quite different to ours and recalling a lot of the things I've read, almost certainly worse.

The other thing is the states are all different aren't they. Enormously different. It would make more sense, OP, to say which state you wanted to join, really.

CrystalMcPistol · 24/05/2015 19:58

Ha! Fair enough. Grin

I wonder which aspects of American culture the crowd of two want to see introduced to the UK.

TheChandler · 24/05/2015 20:01

Why would you want to leave one of the richest unions on earth, with the greatest freedoms and human rights (especially for women) and join a distant failing federation which is on the way down due to its lack of respect for the things Europeans see as basics?

TalkinPeace · 24/05/2015 20:01

I'd happily move to Santa Cruz - but its not exactly a normal US city Smile
