Would you raise an eyebrow at 43 and 38 as ages of prospective parents?

Don't be PC!

Please be honest! To me it seems older than ideal.

It'd be dc3, if that matters?

25 years ago when I had my 1st DD it would have raised an eyebrow BUT now it's the norm.

Whattonamemyselfnow · 16/05/2015 17:23

No

JaniceJoplin · 16/05/2015 17:26

I was told when I had DC1 at Kingston hospital SW London that the average age of a FT mum was 38. I was 33 do positively a youngster Smile

Baddz · 16/05/2015 17:42

I was told I was a geriatric mother at 30!!!

MrsTedCrilly · 16/05/2015 17:47

I love how so much is 'normal' and accepted now.. Older mums, single mums, gay people.. I'm so glad I live in these days.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 16/05/2015 17:49

No

I'm 32 and DP is 43 and we've got a 5 week old, my pfb and DP's 3rd

JohnFarleysRuskin · 16/05/2015 17:56

There were many older mums in the old days too! Plenty had kids in their 40s- only it was more likely their 10th than their 1st...

BlackeyedPetitsPois · 16/05/2015 17:59

Not at all. As long as healthy.

I'm 42 and currently 11 weeks pregnant with my 2nd. I'll be 43 when it arrives. Had 1st at 39.

(DH currently 46)

MrsTedCrilly · 16/05/2015 19:34

johnfarleyruskin Yes it happened back then but much less frowned upon now Smile, I was responding to a poster who said it would have raised an eyebrow back then but not so much these days.

Sgtmajormummy · 16/05/2015 19:45

DC2 at 38 and 46 here. No worries after the amnio was clear.

LifeHuh · 16/05/2015 22:59

No. We were 40 and 39 with DS (DC2), not a whole lot different , and it has been fine.

mandy214 · 16/05/2015 23:16

I wouldn't at 38 for a woman but I think 43 is old - er for a man but more acceptable if it's your 3rd.

I had DC3 at 37 and was 41 when she started school. I am definitely in the "older mum" category. Lots of 1st children in her class where mums are low to mid 30s.

I know it's not the PC thing to say but I'm a bit on the fence of having babies in your 40s. My sister has just has her first at almost 43, I think it's not necessarily going to be hard for her but for the baby who will have pensioners for parents in his early 20s.

Eleanor of Aquitaine was either 42 or 44 when Prince (later King) John was born. Although John's record itself may not be an advertisement for older motherhood, it shows that it is by no means a recent phenomenon.

AnnaBee36 · 17/05/2015 12:41

DH and I are currently expecting our first at 37 and 41. Having observed many much younger expectant mothers on a due date group I joined, I genuinely feel in a better position, and would much rather be doing it now. I don't consider us to be particularly unusual.

ChunkyPickle · 17/05/2015 12:42

Nah - especially not for number 3 (it's about what i'd be if we had a third)

Everydayaschoolday · 17/05/2015 12:45

No. We were 37 & 41 for DC2.

TattyDevine · 17/05/2015 12:46

No way. I know plenty who had their first around those ages.

SoleSource · 17/05/2015 15:22

No.
