Without even trying I usually eat 10+ portions a day, I just can't think how anyone doesn't have at least 5 a day.

Today ive had
oats with kiwi and banana
Apple to snack
Chicken pasta with tomatoes, courgette, onion garlic peppers mushrooms (3 portions at least)
Greek salad tomatoes, cucumber, avocado Basil red onion

And now currently snacking on carrots and humous

So cmon op back in the olden days everyone had more illness because they didn't eat 5 a day or follow a healthy diet?! What codswallop.

JockTamsonsBairns · 15/05/2015 21:06

I am actually shocked that you don't know why some people don't eat enough fruit and veg. I mean, I have a 7yo, and even he knows that some people can't afford it, don't have the means to cook it, can't access the shops which sell it, etc. Do you really not know! or did you just want to tell us all how wonderful you are with your kiwis, avocados and Greek salad tomatoes? Don't you ever read the newspapers, or watch the news? Hmm

whois · 15/05/2015 21:07

Ah ha ha. Very funny OP.

It's actually very easy to not eat 5 a day if you don't eat much fruit or veg, dubious enough...

It's quite easy to have:
Breakfast - eggs on toast, or cereal and yog (both 0)
Lunch - ham or cheese sandwich, no way does three slices of tomatoe count as a portion of veg!
Dinner - some kind of meal with vegx2

And threat wouldn't be a 'bad' diet for a lot of people.

I work in a boarding school. Last night I was in duty overnight, so from Thursday lunchtime to Friday evening I wasn't in control of what I ate. I had half a jacket and a massive plate of salad for dinner last night, but today has been less good. Breakfast was bacon, toast and yoghurt. Lunch was fish, chips and beans followed by apple crumble (heavy on the crumble, light on the apple) with custard. When I finally got home at 8pm after finishing work at 5.30, driving for an hour and ten minutes (my commute) and doing my elderly parents food shop, I could only manage bread and a lump of cheese.
Thats how, OP.

TheEmpressofBlandings · 15/05/2015 21:09

I have a weird thing about fruit, I really love it but very rarely eat it. I went off preparing it when I was pregnant and haven't been able to get back onto it.
Have just counted up and have had juice and toast for breakfast, a banana for snack, scrambled egg for lunch and potato, spinach and chick pea curry. So hardly any! Do chickpeas count?

On the other hand, my DH easily eats 10+ portions a day every single day. Being veggie definitely helps.

Minikievs · 15/05/2015 21:09

Peanut butter on toast, cheese on toast, 2x chocolate brownies, jacket potato with cheese and coleslaw.
Not an unusual day, it's a good day if I have 2 of my 5.

You, OP, are my new food hero and I aspire to skip as merrily through the tulips as you.

Or in other words, have my first Biscuit

drinkscabinet · 15/05/2015 21:10

I had 12, do I win? Actually, unlike the OP I know it's very easy to eat lots of fruit (150g of raspberries disappeared very quickly at lunchtime) but harder to hit the target for veg. And I like veg and have it at lunch and dinner, but it's much easier to get quick and easy fruit to snack on.

SuperFlyHigh · 15/05/2015 21:11

Ah but cardi if you'd grilled some tomatoes and added mushrooms your fry up would've gained 2 extra portions!

Why did you not snack on a lovely apple or rather carrots and hummus later as op did?!

I think we need to know! Hmm

Effendi · 15/05/2015 21:12

I love Greek salad. I always put Feta. I'm in Cyprus where we know how to make it proper like....

Minikievs · 15/05/2015 21:13

Sudden thought: does ketchup count? I had shit loads of that with my cheese on toast

SuperFlyHigh · 15/05/2015 21:13

Cardi that's with your brekkie or lunch btw

Koalafications · 15/05/2015 21:13

Wagglebee · 15/05/2015 21:14

Purple is a fruit, isn't it?

Ellen Purple is an extra special fruit plucked from purple trees by unicorns. It therefore counts as 7 of your 5 a day.

ShannonLetosEyebrowsonFleek · 15/05/2015 21:14

I drink a smoothie for breakfast which probably covers 4.

But it is fucking expensive. I was in LA not long about and bought 3 boxes of strawberries for $2 at the market in downtown.

Obviously with import tax it's more expensive in the UK.

I wish healthy food was cheaper but it's not.

Anyway OP you will piss people off because you are pretty much implying that you are superior to anyone who cannot manage to eat their 5 a day.

Missdread · 15/05/2015 21:15

Fresh fruit and veg costs us a fortune: there are 5 of us in the house and as soon as I fill the bowl with apples and bananas the kids have eaten them all and I have to go shopping again. Strawberries: £2 for a few each, apples at least £2 a bag and don't get me started on tomatoes that cost £3 a bag and are furry with mould after 2 days! That's why, OP: if you're on a limited budget, it's a luxury to be honest.

Starlightbright1 · 15/05/2015 21:15

I can tell you as a mother it isn't always that easy..Ds had cereal for breakfast
Milk - break at school.
Lunch- he will of only packed one veg because thats all he ever does though I don't ask him as he can never remember what he ate except the cake he had for pudding
a hob nob at friends after school
Tea had 3 veg in but he barley touched it so he probably managed about 2 a day..

Any clearer Op.

LapsedTwentysomething · 15/05/2015 21:16

I had a wheatgrass, cucumber and spinach smoothie for breakfast ... Oh fuck it, I'm lying. I had a couple of pieces of buttery toast.

OttiliaVonBCup · 15/05/2015 21:16

One glass of red wine
one glass of white
peanuts
strawberry jam with peanut butter on a digestive

job done

Wagglebee · 15/05/2015 21:16

Carrots make me fart. Sad

OttiliaVonBCup · 15/05/2015 21:17

Sorry, 6
Digesive biscuit was wholemeal one.

rockybalboa · 15/05/2015 21:17

Ate 10+ portions of fruit & veg and then committed the MN sin of typing "should of". Slow hand clap OP.

I hate fruit. Today I have eaten: buttered toast
Crisps
Slice of bacon and leek slice with salad
Three ginger nuts
A chocolate brownie
Homemade chilli (containing one red pepper, 4 grated carrots, 1 tin tomatoes, split between 5 people) with two tortilla wraps topped with grated cheese, creme fraiche and chopped avocado.
Then I made these pancakes out of mashed banana and egg. With chocolate chips in. They were yum.

That's about normal for me. I reckon 3 portions maybe 4 at a push. But then I am pretty fat.

Missdread · 15/05/2015 21:18

7 Ottilla: there were peas in the nuts!Wink

rockybalboa · 15/05/2015 21:19

Hang on, there was a tin of kidney beans in my chilli too.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 15/05/2015 21:20

I rarely have my 5 a day if I'm honest. A typical day for me would be:

Natural yogurt with granola for breakfast- Maybe 1 portion in there of dried fruit.

Lunch is usually cheese and crackers/chocolate/crisps

Dinner- Chicken and potatoes

OttiliaVonBCup · 15/05/2015 21:21

Hmmm, true. Pea nuts.

And gallons of tea, which is made of leaves and twigs.

I think I'm winning here.
