to wonder how anyone doesn't eat their five a day

Without even trying I usually eat 10+ portions a day, I just can't think how anyone doesn't have at least 5 a day.

Today ive had
oats with kiwi and banana
Apple to snack
Chicken pasta with tomatoes, courgette, onion garlic peppers mushrooms (3 portions at least)
Greek salad tomatoes, cucumber, avocado Basil red onion

And now currently snacking on carrots and humous

I don't have breakfast.
I have bircher muesli with some form of fruit (generally berries) for lunch.

I leave the house between 6:30 and 7, and don't get home until 7. If I don't take some fruit or veg to work for a snack then I have to get 4 portions of fruit and veg into my evening. If I exercise after work then I don't eat before 9 - by then, I don't want to be chopping up lots of bits for dinner (or indeed to take to work the next day).

I can do it, but it's easy to just have loads of fruit, which sort of defeats the point since fruit has so much sugar in. Getting variety throughout the week is much harder for me than hitting 5. But there are still days where I just don't bother because, frankly, I'd rather go to bed.

FarFromAnyRoad · 15/05/2015 20:38

I'm eating an espresso Magnum. If I could I'd happily eat another 8.

Redglitter · 15/05/2015 20:39

If this is a thread boasting about how much fruit and veg we eat I'm out. I don't eat ANY vegetables EVER

DrElizabethPlimpton · 15/05/2015 20:40

Why start a thread like this? I ask this as a vegan.

SweetAndFullOfGrace · 15/05/2015 20:40

This is my second vegetable lecture in as many days. What's going on??

Royalsighness · 15/05/2015 20:41

I bet you have terrible wind

WhyHaveYouDruggedTheirOnions · 15/05/2015 20:41

I wish I was you OP

Perfectlypurple · 15/05/2015 20:42

I really don't worry or care what others eat. Today I have had 2 hifi light bars and spinach pasta with melted cheese spread on it. No fruit or veg at all. I worked all night last night, had a few hours sleep when I got home and have spent the day functioning as best I can with as little effort as possible. Some days I have loads of fruit and veg, others none.

itsonlysubterfuge · 15/05/2015 20:42

My day of food:

A banana, peanut butter muffin. (this could technically count as one portion as it was made of coconut flour and bananas)

Two slices of bread and two eggs. 6 baby carrots. (one portion of veg)

Lasagne. (Probably 2-3 potions of veg as the meat sauce was 2/3 vegetables and I added extra plain tomato sauce over the top)

Seems pretty easy to not eat fruit and veg to me.

Passmethecrisps · 15/05/2015 20:43

I am a fan of the old veg. I had my own allotment for a good while and nothing beats munching a dwarf bean or baby courgette straight off the plant.

However. It is quite obvious why not everyone eats 5 a day.

  1. don't like it
  2. can't afford it
  3. not confident with cooking (badly cooked veg is awful)
  4. don't fancy it today

Most days I will hit my 5 easily. Today I haven't but I care not a jot. And the diet mel describes is entirely usual.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 15/05/2015 20:43

Smug, OP. You might not think so, but really, you are. And dim if you can't see that other people have different tastes in food, and different budgets to you.

ilovesooty · 15/05/2015 20:44

I wish I was you OP

I don't think I do.

sebsmummy1 · 15/05/2015 20:44

Some people hate fruit and veg and actively avoid it.

AttitcusFinchIsMyFather · 15/05/2015 20:45

I actually think the OP deserves a round of applause! C'mon everyone, let's clap the OP!

Have a Biscuit, I promise it's make out of kale, or some shit.

It's expensive, really expensive if you're on a tight budget. We can afford some fruit, frozen veg, but eating fresh veg every day would mean not making rent next month. I'd rather roof over my head - a smug, self-satisfied, healthy eating attitude won't last long living in a carboad box (although I guess I could eat my 'home' then, get plenty of super duper fiber in my hobo system).

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 15/05/2015 20:47

Because I physically can't eat that much. I used to eat lots of veg before my medication got changed & killed my appetite.

AttitcusFinchIsMyFather · 15/05/2015 20:47

Some people are relying on foodbanks. Lets make them feel even worse by berating them for not getting 10 a day!

Passmethecrisps · 15/05/2015 20:47

With that fabulous diet op is likely to be taking a beautifully formed conked brown poo.

Are you at home? I work from home quite often and it's easy on those days to eat enough fruit and veg. Not 10x85g but certainly easy to make more than five portions. On the days I work in a local office, fine, I can take a packed lunch with decent fruit'n'veg.

But if I'm travelling for work, no, just can't be done apart from at great expense unless it's five bananas a day. Obviously VERY practical when you're away for three or four days. When I work in London, good healthy take away food is available but it's fucking pricey!

arethereanyleftatall · 15/05/2015 20:49

I didn't have any veg today, but I do know the difference between your and you're. I win.

SwirlyThingAlert · 15/05/2015 20:50

I know WHAT I should be doing. Chances are I can't be arsed though.
If I'm feeling good, for breakfast I have porridge with blueberries stirred through.
Or sliced bananas with linseed sprinkled over for fibre.
Most mornings though it's toast. 'Cos that's all I feel like.
Come lunchtime, it's a sandwich. Or noodles.
So easy not to eat your 5 a day. I do manage it, but not always.

travailtotravel · 15/05/2015 20:51

Take fruit out of the equation to reduce or moderate sugar - to lose weight, or manage diabetes etc. Now do it. Bit more boring, isn't it.

ltk · 15/05/2015 20:51

I generally eat about 10 per day. Never occurred to me to start a thread about it as that would be twattish.

Jackieharris · 15/05/2015 20:51

Well I hate most veg. Hardly eat it at all.

I like fruit but the kids tend to eat what's about so can easily go a few days without any.

This week all the fruit and veg I've had is: glass of OJ, the tomato sauce on pizza, pineapple on pizza, the tomato sauce & bit of carrots & onions in a lasagne, tin of peaches, 2 or 3 bananas, 4 or 5 satsumas, some mushrooms on a steak, the salad on a burger.

I'd say this is a very typical week.
