Alain Roux, at his restaurant The Waterside Inn. It was my 40th birthday and DH took me there and we stayed over night. He is the most amazing, generous man:
DH noticed on a little card on the dresser "if you are interested in seeing the kitchen, please contact Reception to see if a visit can be arranged".
The message came back - yes, but it has to be RIGHT NOW. It was about 6pm and I guess they were gearing up for dinner service.
We trotted down to the kitchen, shook hands with the man himself, and looked around the area of the pass. I thought that was it, but no - he took my arm and gave us a personal 30 minute in-depth tour of his kitchen, full of all his sous-chefs and commis chefs frantically getting ready for service. They all took the time and effort to explain what they were working on and how it fitted into the menu for that evening. It was magical. I felt like hte luckiest Masterchef contestant!
At the end of the tour he gave me a signed copy of his latest book, and at the end of the meal there was a special pudding with Happy Birthday Hearts on it and 2 glasses of champagne on the house.
And to top it all off, Heston Blumenthal was at the next table, celebrating his birthday with his family. He was very gracious to all the people who asked for a photo / autograph.
