To wish cafes would have a designated smoking area...

..which is completely separate from non smoking areas so I would be able to sit outside and enjoy the 'fresh' air without smoking the equivalent of 20 fucking fags!

Dancergirl · 21/04/2015 11:08

I'm not sure squoosh there seems to be quite a bit of demand for non smoking cafes and eating establishments.

From a business point of view, maybe a completely non smoking cafe would do very well.

Sallyingforth · 21/04/2015 11:08

Last weekend, one of our dinner party left the table before the dessert and went outside to smoke.
When she came back the stink of stale smoke from her breath was awful. Everyone looked at each other and grimaced - but she was oblivious of the offence she had caused.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/04/2015 11:08

Stinkersmum - what about the cost to the NHS of treating all the smoking-related illness - won't that cancel out a lot of that £5 billion?

forago · 21/04/2015 11:10

stinker I don't understand your point. they ate forced to sit outside as they can't sit inside, even when its cold and wet. I can sit where I like, as am not stupid enough to smoke, but effectively can NEVER sit outside as there ate always 3/4 tables of people fagging away. their inconsiderate choice is preventing my choice - that's what I will continue to complain about, wherever their seating preference might be.

squoosh · 21/04/2015 11:11

You see Sallying I think that's just your problem and not hers. The poor woman probably has no idea that she caused such 'offence' by going out to smoke a cigarette and then returning to her party.

squoosh · 21/04/2015 11:12

STDG smokers actually pay far more into the coffers in terms of tax on cigarettes (approx £5 per pack of 20) than they take out in costs to the NHS.

Stinkersmum · 21/04/2015 11:13

No - that's why I said NET £5bn. That's what's left after all the smoking related costs to the nhs, cost of fires etc caused by cigarettes etc. Last figures I saw were £18.2bn revenue, £12.9bn cost. So still contributing massively towards the economy.

Dancergirl · 21/04/2015 11:13

That's the thing sally, with any other form of body emitted smell - BO, bad breath etc, it's totally unacceptable and embarrassing for the person in question. But why with cigarette smell is it ok and no-one says anything?

squoosh · 21/04/2015 11:15

Are you for real Dancer? It's FAR more socially acceptable to wrinkle your nose at the smell of a smoker than to tell someone they have halitosis or BO.

Dancergirl · 21/04/2015 11:18

Not in my experience squoosh. Yes it's difficult and awkward to bring up the issue if someone has BO, but it is done. I've never seen or heard about anyone bringing up the issue of someone smelling of cigarette smoke.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/04/2015 11:19

I didn't know those figures - thank you Stinkersmum and squoosh.

Momagain1 · 21/04/2015 11:23

Moot point. They lose business either way. Ban smokers, the relatively small number who must smoke in public cant go. Dont ban it, the relatively small number who cannot/will not subject themselves to it won't go there.

Unless the law steps in, Which customers they reject depends on who they want to serve/employ/their own habits. Probably mostly the latter.

I am more irked to be crammed in at a small table at a pub, sitting and eating and drinking. I mean, how many times do you suppose a bigger spending party has gone on down the road because the 6 and 8 seat tables are full of property, not people?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 21/04/2015 11:25

Again? Really? We're going to have these threads on a weekly basis now until the autumn aren't we? Sad

If you want a designated smoke free outdoor area then tell the cafe. Maybe they'll provide one if it's in their interests as a business. Many already do, so give them your custom and tell your friends.

I've never seen or heard about anyone bringing up the issue of someone smelling of cigarette smoke.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Dancergirl · 21/04/2015 11:27

plenty if the topic bores you don't post on the thread!

I can't understand people who post just to say it's boring/been done to death etc.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 21/04/2015 11:29

Where did I say this topic bores me?

squoosh · 21/04/2015 11:31

Yes it's difficult and awkward to bring up the issue if someone has BO, but it is done. I've never seen or heard about anyone bringing up the issue of someone smelling of cigarette smoke.

Most people I know would rather walk over hot coals than bring up the subject of someone's BO whereas I know plenty of people who'd make a throwaway 'you stink of fags' comment.

Dancergirl · 21/04/2015 11:32

Your first paragraph gave that impression plenty sorry if I misunderstood you.

Momagain1 · 21/04/2015 11:35

With all the accompanying filth of ash and cigarette ends. Yuck. Smokers stop smoking.

Aargh! That's what gets me. Smoke if you must, and pollute your body. . But make sure your ends get to a bin. Not all over the pavement, the gutter, the garden next door. the planters, the footpaths, the beach, and every damned other place they just flick them. If that means you have to carry a container of ash and fag ends in your pocket to dispose at home, so be it.

I made my brother crawl around under the hedge at my house and gather up all his. Made a big deal of considerately going outside to smoke, but then was leaving the rubbishy ends into the garden! I think he was shocked at how many there were after just four days. Tried to say they must be from the builders, 6 years before! Nope, in California, you can't smoke on the job, not even an outdoor one like a building site. Plus, obviously if you know they would still be recognisabke after 6 years, all the more reason not to be dropping them on the ground.

Dancergirl · 21/04/2015 11:36

That's interesting squoosh, I've never made a 'you stink of fags' comment nor have ever heard anyone make one. But the way you describe it sort of makes my point.

Cigarette smell - make a throwaway comment, it's laughed off and not dealt with. Result - it's 'ok' to smell of an ashtray.

BO - taken very seriously. How to bring it up sensitively, how to approach the issue, lots of thought, think about deodorant etc.

Debinaround · 21/04/2015 11:39

I don't smoke and I don't know what a fair solution is as far as separate areas outside for smokers.

I feel sorry for smokers who have had to sit outside all winter, freezing while drinking their coffee because they (quite rightly) can't sit indoors. Then all of a sudden the sun comes out and they get moaned at because no one wants them to smoke outside ether.

Seems a bit unfair to me.

Morelikeguidelines · 21/04/2015 11:40

"Again?"

The thing is it is a right pain in the arse to have people smoking around you just because you are outdoors.

Hoppinggreen · 21/04/2015 11:40

I would prefer not to have to inhale 2nd hand smoke if I want to sit outside a cafe or pub but yo be honest f it's the price I have to pay for smoking to be banned inside I will gladly pay it!!!!

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 21/04/2015 11:40

Yanbu. I think the law will go that way eventually anyway though.

In the meantime it is horrible to have to sit next to a smoker. And no, I don't want to sit inside to avoid the fumes. Smoke somewhere else, it's antisocial and downright rude if people are eating.

squoosh · 21/04/2015 11:41

No Dancer. You said 'But why with cigarette smell is it ok and no-one says anything?'

I have told you that know plenty of people who do say something to smokers. I didn't say it's laughed off. People I know are loud and proud in their dislike of cigarette smoke.

Dancergirl · 21/04/2015 11:45

They say something but it's a throwaway comment, i.e. one that's not taken too seriously.

What's the reaction of the smoker when told they smell?
