To wish cafes would have a designated smoking area...

..which is completely separate from non smoking areas so I would be able to sit outside and enjoy the 'fresh' air without smoking the equivalent of 20 fucking fags!

'Expat that's pretty damn close to "I am a Canadian" if you remember that one smile'

Is it? How so? I've never made a secret of my native nationality, or of my dual nationality, or proclaimed to be Canadian, why on Earth would I do that?

Icimoi · 21/04/2015 23:43

Life's too short to worry about what some whinging nobody you'll never see again thinks.

That reminds me of a former colleague of mine. He applied for a job which would have given him a £10K a year increase in salary, and stood a pretty good chance of getting it. He was a smoker, and his attitude to anyone who objected was very much along those lines. When a woman he encountered at a social do asked him not to smoke near her, he told her to fuck off. A few days later, he went for his job interview. Guess who was on the interview panel?

YellowTulips · 21/04/2015 23:48

Expat I meant in the context there was an assumption you were not familiar with the U.S. by a poster who didn't know your background.

In the same way the poster in the Canadian thread made assumptions the Canadian poster didn't know about life in Canada - that's all Grin

I Am Canadian

Hopefully I've bookmarked the place where the OP asks StewieGriffinsMom (who is Canadian) if she has ever even been to Canada.

YellowTulips · 21/04/2015 23:52

Thanks Cadie Smile

CadieAgain · 21/04/2015 23:53

You're welcome. Thanks for the memory Grin

squoosh · 21/04/2015 23:54

It looks like StewieGriffin has had all her posts withdrawn from that thread. Shame!

YellowTulips · 22/04/2015 00:00

Maybe she was a smoker as well as a Canadian and got hounded out of the thread Wink.

Vitriol abhors a vacuum after all Smile

Icimoi · 22/04/2015 00:02

I wonder which group in society will be the target for all this vitriol when smoking is eventually banned?

I would put money on it being precisely no-one.

It amuses me that some smokers have this massive sense of persecution. I'm ancient enough to remember when smoking was permitted all over the place. The lower deck of buses used to be packed whilst the much smaller number of smokers spread themselves over the upper decks; the same applied to smoking carriages on trains. If you got into a smoking carriage because there was no alternative, the journey was hateful and the entire carriage absolutely stank, even if no-one was smoking at that moment. When you went to a restaurant your meal would be ruined if your table was anywhere near a smoker's, because it rarely occurred to them that you might not appreciate smoke wafting round your food. Going home from pubs and clubs, your hair and clothes would stink. If you shared an office with a smoker, again life would be hellish. I can remember dreading going to meetings with an important client where he and his associates chain-smoked: within half an hour my eyes would be streaming but they neither seemed to notice or care. And of course people with asthma and other lung problems in effect had to shut themselves away and avoid places like pubs and restaurants altogether.

All that time non-smokers were expected to suck it up and, if anyone demurred, smokers would loudly proclaim their right to smoke as if it was protected by the Human Rights Convention. By comparison with all the problems I've referred to, the minor inconveniences which smokers are now asked to undergo are absolutely trivial - yet a minority complain just as vociferously now as when they shouted down non-smokers in the past. I've definitely served my time putting up with smoke, I really don't think it's too much to ask now that smokers just take themselves away from my vicinity if they really can't wait before lighting up.

Sagethyme · 22/04/2015 00:04

The thing is, i am not a smoker, but end of summer i try and sit next to smokers coz they keep the effing wasps away, which is great especially when i want to tuck into a great big sticky bum

Sagethyme · 22/04/2015 00:05

Bun i mean bun!

expatinscotland · 22/04/2015 00:20

I see, Yellow. Smile

I have been to Canada, several times, but only the Western part Wink, Alberta and BC, to climb (and smoke grass, there was no one around but other grass smokers).

ilooklikemrsploppy · 22/04/2015 08:11

I don't want a complete smoking ban. I believe that people should have the opportunity to smoke if they wish to/are stupid enough to in the comfort of their own home or in an area that will not impact on my health and well being. I'm happy that you all contribute so much to the NHS and hope that I'm around long enough to make full use of your contributions.

As for this nonsense about a persecuted minority and asking who the anti-smokers will move on to next...the obese, those with offending body odours..none of these things impact directly on my health and have the almost immediate effect of making me feel physically sick or give me a sore head.

Hope you're all enjoying a ciggie with your morning cuppa.

Bob Hoskins?

It's irrelevant (and actually an urban legend rather than truth) - I told loads of moaners to "fuck off" when I was a smoker & not one of them interviewed me for a job......

Anyway - back to the OP - yes YABU, VU, VVU. HTH TTFN Grin

Icimoi · 22/04/2015 08:27

Not an urban legend, IKnow. I was writing about the factual experience of an ex colleague. But it is interesting that you are so determined to close your eyes to facts.
