To say something about this choice of baby name

horrifiednamechanger · 10/04/2015 20:33

DB and SIL are expecting their first baby. The baby is long awaited and I'm delighted for them obviously.

But, SIL they have decided to call the baby Charmaine (yes, spelt like that) and to make matters worse SIL seems to pronounce it almost 'char' rather than the kind of French style 'shar'. It almost sounds like she is ordering a take away.

Anyway upon hearing this news I had to bite my tongue so hard it practically bled. I don't think I did a very good job of hiding my horror surprise.

DB and myself have rather naice upbringing and our DM was a huge bit of a snob, not quite Hyacinth Bucket but not far off. I am fully prepared to accept I have inherited DM's views and IBU.... but I am also sure this would not be DB first or last choice of name, but he is known to 'go with the flow' and 'not cause waves' because SIL can be quite strong willed.

IABU to hate the name and WIBU to say something?

YABU

.... not least the unashamed snobbishness objecting to the name because it sounds like someone who might come from a council house.

WTAF? Since when does a name or parental housing give you the right to judge a child, one who's not even born yet stupid cah

TomCruiseCreepsMeOut · 12/04/2015 22:42

The name Charmaine is fine. I don't see anything wrong with it. So many rude people on this thread...yuck!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 12/04/2015 23:09

Barely relevant to the thread but in fact both spelt and spelled are acceptable past participles of the verb 'to spell' so no need for correction. grammarist.com/spelling/spelled-spelt/

IsadoraQuagmire · 12/04/2015 23:13

Did anyone just watch Law and Order SVU? There was a beautiful, slightly villainous character in it called Charmaine (played by Marcia Cross) I like the name more than ever now.

loopinthep · 12/04/2015 23:18

Aarrgghh! We're Scottish....shut up about bloody Ireland! In fact stop stalking me you odd person who can't spell.

loopinthep · 12/04/2015 23:33

There's some sanctimonious twaddle being spoken about the OP.

Valsoldknickers · 12/04/2015 23:37

I hope you're not referring to me Grin or maybe you're referring to Thumb, Maud, Icimoi, TomCruise, Alis, treacle, SurlyCue et al who also didn't agree with you!

If I was a stalker I would follow you from thread to thread, yawn, you're really not that interesting.

Remember, you brought up Irish names. If you don't want reaction maybe you shouldn't post inflammatory comments. Slán.

loopinthep · 12/04/2015 23:49

You're back again!! I'm not Irish aaargh! Leave me in peace.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 13/04/2015 00:29

No one cares whether you're Irish, Scottish, Martian or even human. You're rude and arrogant though.

JessieMcJessie · 13/04/2015 02:41

You did however claim to be "gaelic" though loop, an assertion I sincerely doubt. Perhaps you meant Celtic? Not the same thing. Where do you stand on Mhairi and Ruaridh? Scottish people 'use stupid spellings just to confuse teachers' too you know...

And "spelt"is perfectly correct.I sincerely hope you are not a teacher.

And yes, it is "spelled" not "spelt".

No it isn't. As has been said, both are valid.

I still have no idea why you were bleating on about Mary being indicative of a Gaelic family. None of he Mary's I know have any kind of connection with Gaelic roots. Heaven knows why on earth anyone would assume you were a "Gaelic family" because your DD is called Mary.

purdiepie · 13/04/2015 07:32

It's a shit name and brings to mind the daughter of an illiterate, non-tax-paying cage fighter.

QuitSlaggingOffMyName · 13/04/2015 07:36

Grin at my cage fighting dad!

Seriously, would you say that to my face Purdie? Or are you only judgemental behind the safety of a screen? Hmm

SoupDragon · 13/04/2015 07:46

No one would be stupid enough to insult the daughter of an illiterate tax dodging cage fighter to her face...

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 13/04/2015 07:48

Haha purdie I thought you were being serious there for a minute...

KoalaDownUnder · 13/04/2015 07:56

Oh well, I just came across a friend of a friend's daughter on FB called...Chevi.

If you think Charmaine is bad, have at that!

thegreylady · 13/04/2015 08:01

It isn't as awkward as Chardonnay.

thegreylady · 13/04/2015 08:05

Charmaine does remind me of Fred West's little girl who was murdered, so sad.

YouTheCat · 13/04/2015 08:12

I am almost literally crying here at the way Bear has maligned my dd's beautiful name, 'Princess Banana Hammock'. I'll have you know that it's a family name used for generations. Sad

Grin Grin

purdiepie · 13/04/2015 09:39

Of course I'm being serious. My goodness, there isn't a posh person in the land who could bring refinement to that name.

purdiepie · 13/04/2015 09:43

Is it illegal to be judgemental about names? Of course I wouldn't say it to your face because that would be absurdly and unnecessarily tactless. This is a thread, however, specifically asking us to opine on the name. My opinion is that it is truly horrible.

YouTheCat · 13/04/2015 09:59

The thread was asking us whether the OP should say something to her DB. It was just about unanimous that she shouldn't, even from those who dislike the name. But she piled in a did it anyway.

Glad she's not my sister.

carabos · 13/04/2015 10:10

I'm sitting next to my public-school, Oxbridge educated cage-fighting director boss. Shall I tell him that he's clearly a tax dodger whose DDs are destined for a life of hell and see what happens?

purdiepie · 13/04/2015 10:13

Yes.
