To wonder why parents let their children go out dressed inappropriately

Now I know the weather is warning up, and you expect to see chidkren in shorts, t shirts, skirts etc etc but why oh why do parents allow children, I'm talking Young children age 8-9-10 go out dressed in belly tops and shorts that are that short they are exposing some of their bum? It really grates me as surely young girls should not be going round dressed like this, it's inapropriate imo and I wouldn't dream of letting my own daughter walk round in such a state.

I let my dd wear what she likes and she chooses her own clothes most of the time.
The rule is if you look daft or inappropriate you get changed, so far we have managed.
We laugh though as between dh and ds1 and 2, she won't be allowed to do too much anyway.
apparently skirts down to ankles until she is 30 Grin

It's Friday sparkling, I have a large glass of red WineSmile

MadgeFinn · 10/04/2015 19:03

Once a child reached say the age of 16 then I'd say it's entirely up to them what they wear, but when it's the parents having to buy the stuff then there's no way I'd give into demands for wearing some of the stuff I've seen.
Wet look leggings with crop tops saying "hot babe" are some of the things I've seen 9 and 10 year olds wearing. No they're not little girls for long, there's no way these clothes are ok. I'm quite shocked that some parents think kids should be able to wear whatever they want. Kids need boundaries.

ghostyslovesheep · 10/04/2015 19:08

yes they need boundaries - and also freedom to make choices and mistakes

I'd draw the line at a sparkly thong with Boner Garage written on the front - a crop top - not so much

Mine wears a crop top (with a tiny bit of skin showing) with jeans, high tops and a cardi - hardly the hight of indecency

TenerifeSea · 10/04/2015 19:09

"'Cheesecake munchers'=personal attack surely?"

Don't be ridiculous, it's clearly a compliment. Cheesecake eaters are classy and suave. Wink

TenerifeSea · 10/04/2015 19:09

I just want cheesecake now. :(

MargotLovedTom · 10/04/2015 19:09

Having just been in Primark this afternoon with DD age 10 I know exactly the sort of clothes the OP means, and they are awful - cheap looking, horrible colours and patterns and shit fabric. That's why I don't like them.

Hamiltoes · 10/04/2015 19:13

Hahaha, have you been on Instagram lately and had a nosy at all the handmade kids clothing pages popping up? You'd have a fit OP. I quite like it, nothing better than a baby in bloomers with their chubby thighs and sticky out tummies. Also all those 70s (My mums generation!) tunic tops worn as dressies (I'll show a pic below) are heading back in this year.

I don't really see anything wrong with it, and I let mine run around in whatever they want as long as they are happy and comfortable! I think really thats the most important thing, to teach your child (especially daughters) to be body comfortable and if they want to run about in a top thats too small for them, so what?!

Your dd will be asking why she can't wear 3" heels next. Get ready.

custardismyhamster · 10/04/2015 19:15

I love the sound of the DD in swimming costume and a net underskirt (very SATC!) and the 18 month old in her chosen outfit-if you can't clash at that age when can you?

dingit · 10/04/2015 19:16

Actually I love cheesecake too, so will happily munch along with you, but still disagree Wink

5madthings · 10/04/2015 19:17

Hamilton I loved putting my dd in little bloomer pants when she was a baby. H&m did loads of little dresses with matching pants in their summer range, cool, practical and cute.

NorahDentressangle · 10/04/2015 19:18

Funny everyone is listing stuff their DDs wear.

They have no urge to show off their DSs' bellies, abs.

Ooo, I wonder why not.

nochocolateforlentteacake · 10/04/2015 19:18

I did see a lad of about 7or 8 in swimming trunks, t-shirt, raincoat and wellies one day. In a central london park. In winter. In the snow. I assumed the mum had just decided it wasn't worth the argument...

wigglesrock · 10/04/2015 19:20

I wore really short shorts when I was 9, twas the thing in 1983, the short shiny red or blue lines with the white trim. I think we all wore our swimming costume underneath them. I don't live in a place renowned for sunshine, so as soon as it stopped drizzling it was summer wear. My almost 10 year old has an array of cropped/belly tops - all from Primark, all bought with her own money, no hotpants though, she prefers a tight jegging Smile

CatsCantTwerk · 10/04/2015 19:21

I haven't read it all but can I just say my db when he was younger would wear nothing but shorts and wellies. Is that inappropriate op?

nochocolateforlentteacake · 10/04/2015 19:23

But was it snowing?

NorahDentressangle · 10/04/2015 19:23

So we've had 'a lad in the park' and 'my DB'. So as I said, funny no one is showing off their DSs' bellies, abs.

I don't think the op means short shorts though. She's on about those that are cut away at the bum so the bum cheeks hang out. They're made purposely to flash the flesh. If adults want to wear them fine, whatever, not a nice look for kids.

NorahDentressangle · 10/04/2015 19:25

No, that's a cop out.

If it's ok for your DD to flaunt her bum and belly why don't you do it with your DS?

NorahDentressangle · 10/04/2015 19:26

Or perhaps I should rephrase that
If it's ok for your DD to wear clothes which happen to expose her bum and belly why don't you do it with your DS?

5madthings · 10/04/2015 19:28

Ds2, ds3 and Ds4 are frequently topless in the summer. as long as they have suncream on. park, beach, way home from school. Tbh I am just grateful they keep pants on most of the time.

Dd still wears just trunks/shorts style bottoms for beach or pool with no top as she wants to be like her brothers. I have no problem with any of my kids baring their tummies.

But as I said the judgements are all made against girls.

happybubblebrain · 10/04/2015 19:30

I think the word 'inappropriate' is the most overused word in the English language this decade. When anyone uses it I instantly decide I'll never bother with them again.

I let my daughter wear whatever she wants to wear outside of school.
