To wonder why parents let their children go out dressed inappropriately

Now I know the weather is warning up, and you expect to see chidkren in shorts, t shirts, skirts etc etc but why oh why do parents allow children, I'm talking Young children age 8-9-10 go out dressed in belly tops and shorts that are that short they are exposing some of their bum? It really grates me as surely young girls should not be going round dressed like this, it's inapropriate imo and I wouldn't dream of letting my own daughter walk round in such a state.

OP posts:
debbriana · 11/04/2015 09:43

I walked topples until my boobs started to grow. Freedom

MadgeFinn · 11/04/2015 10:06

Most girls aspire to be like their mums or sisters, aunties or cousins really. Or we would all be Madonna now.
Well iI didn't actually say most girls, I said lotsThere's no denying though that young girls are influenced by celebrities unfortunately. They might end up being like their mums, aunties or whatever but I'm sure they didn't aspire to that at the time. I remember as a teen I never aspired to look and dress like my mum.

LotusLight · 11/04/2015 10:11

full nudity is great though isn't it for many of us and for others it's the complete burka and little girls with heads covered. We are a country of different people

MustBeLoopy390 · 11/04/2015 10:33

Im with you op on the shorts, there are some lovely shorts that don't show too much, but crop tops? They were the staple of my summer wardrobe as a kid, and my dd (6) has a few nice ones. She much prefers tee shirts or long tops though, even in the warmer weather.

Cantdecideondinner · 11/04/2015 10:41

Am I the only one wondering where everyone was that they were even warm enough for belly tops. Mine were just about in jeans and tshirts in London.

exLtEveDallasNoBollocks · 11/04/2015 10:44

CantDecide, I don't know about anyone else but I'm in Worcs. It was 25 degrees at 2pm yesterday and the sun is glaring right now (after a downpour at 7am).

Nayville · 11/04/2015 10:56

I've read whole thread and think the issue is that op looks down on certain styles of clothes made for kids.
There are some lovely crop tops/shorts out there for kids.
Agree that shorts that expose bum cheeks on purpose look daft at any age.

ClaudetteWyms · 11/04/2015 10:57

Wow. "Inappropriate "distasteful" "a state" "bum hanging out" "scantily dressed" "chavvy" and "common" all used to describe children - well girls, anyway. What a lovely OP.

Some people are worryingly quick to sexualise and judge little girls based on their appearance.

QOD · 11/04/2015 11:03

Seems I read a different op to most ... I don't agree that crop tops are wrong nor that they're sexualising ... op are you talking about hot pants style shorts on tweens?
At Thorpe Park last year, I was already feeling a bit nauseous when a group of tweens, aged 9 to 11 ish sauntered by.
They had their arses hanging out of the bottom of their shorts .... not showing bum crave but cheek. They looked like fricking Vegas strippers in miniature. They looked incredibly inappropriately dressed and I would never let my dad out dressed like that.
If you just mean they look wrong in tight shorts that are just too small, their pants or knickers waist band is showing or that a crop top is their crime, then I disagree

QOD · 11/04/2015 11:05

Lmao at not letting my dad out dressed like that ...

Nayville · 11/04/2015 11:10

Lmao QOD. I imagined Money Supermarket Dave again there.

MadgeFinn · 11/04/2015 11:14

and I would never let my dad out dressed like that.
There was me thinking your dad was the one in the money super market ad Grin
Yes I think the OP was on about them kind of shorts. I agree they're horrible for young girls. Loads don't agree though.

ohtheholidays · 11/04/2015 11:17

I don't like seeing it either.I wish the flaming shops would stop selling stuff like it in such young sizes.

You get nagged and nagged, well I do anyways by DD11 oh but my friends are allowed(yes and I'd like to ring they're mother's bloody necks)because now I'm having to listen to you whinge at me about it.I of course wouldn't ring the Mum's necks.

I worry because of all the nasty people around now that want to harm children.I want all my children to be as far under they're radar as much as possible.I might be more worried because I was hurt as a child myself and would do anything for my kids not to have to go through that.

Birdsgottafly · 11/04/2015 11:30

I was about to type "you can all do one slagging off Lambrini", then it occurred to me that I'm no better than I ought to be.

So my opinion that a child can't be sexualised, just by wearing types of vlothing, unless you are attracted to children (and thus want a child to look like a child), is probably irrelevant.

It's a shame that all Schools can't include, respecting personal bounderies, every day sexism and Victim blaming into the criculuim, fast, so it dies a much needed death.

DinkyDye · 11/04/2015 11:33

I agree about the shorts with bums hanging out and the crop tops on young girls. It's not about staying cooler, hardly a heatwave at the moment Hmm

But with so many poster's saying it's ok then no wonder the manufacturers are making these clothes, they are getting bought.

When dd is a teenager l wont get too much of a say in how she dresses but definitely at 8 and 9.

DinkyDye · 11/04/2015 11:35

But bird why does an 8 yo have to wear shorts with bum cheeks showing? Too short meh, but actual bum cheek meant to be seem is properly off.

MadgeFinn · 11/04/2015 11:42

Some mums seem to want their young DDs to look sexy.

Birdsgottafly · 11/04/2015 11:43

They don't, it would be a more practical choice to wear longer shorts, I hate that often girls don't develop physical confidence because they don't play and rough house, because they are dressed "prettily" etc.

That is world's apart from the reasons the OP is stating.

Belly tops are practical, that's why gymnasts, dancers etc wear them.

bilbodog · 11/04/2015 11:46

just made a coffee - any more of that cheesecake left?

My DS was VERY strong minded with her choice of clothes from about 10 to 16 years. I allowed her to go out however she wanted - apparently she often wore PJ bottoms with skirts on top (I don't remember now) and looked like a street urchin a lot of the time - I thought that if I let her get it out of her system when she was young by the time she was 16+ and going out properly on her own she would have found her own style - and luckily she has - she is now 22 and has been going out looking really gorgeous for a number of years.

OP good luck as she gets older - you may need to stand back..............

Birdsgottafly · 11/04/2015 11:48

Made, can you explain how an 8 year old can look sexy?

My background was CP SW, I've worked with perpetrators, they want frilly socks and plaits (as the age play costumes show).

Female dress is always linked to sexuality, of any age, this needs to change.

It's ironic that adult women struggle to find bikini shorts rather than knickers. Males do not fret over clothing, or have to, the way some would have females do.

Birdsgottafly · 11/04/2015 11:50

Just out of interest, let's see how many threads are started this year about little boys with their tops off, child sex offenders like little boys as well, but no doubt the emphasis will be on girls and there awful/Neglectful Mother's.

Sallyingforth · 11/04/2015 11:51

If there's one word I'd like to see banned on MN it's "inappropriate".
It gets thrown at any object or incident that someone takes a dislike to.
It can mean anything or nothing.

If you think something is ugly, badly fitting, in the wrong place or overly sexualised, FFS have the guts to say so!

Just saying 'XXX is inappropriate' is feeble and meaningless.

SisterNancySinatra · 11/04/2015 11:56

Praps it's because children are more podgy nowadays and have bum cheeks and stomachs that stick out than years ago when we were all young.

MadgeFinn · 11/04/2015 12:06

I don't think any 8 year olds can ever look sexy, but we all know there are people who do. I often hear mums calling their little girls sexy, it's bizarre, why on earth would you even think that way. Birds I don't think they make shorts for little boys to show off their bum cheeks, but if they did I should imagine a lot of mothers wouldn't let them wear them.
