Could I vote UKIP.... if it would regenerate my town?

We have a failing town, the last bank has left, we still have a post office, and a couple of other shops, and there is a little car park there, where they charge you as soon as you get there.

We (me and my friends) think that if it was free for a couple of hours we would go in and get stuff, maybe go to one of the cafes there, but no, as we can get free parking in the nearest (slightly bigger) town, we just go there.

I was talking to a local shop owner who is up for election on the local council - he said he wants to sort the parking, but cannot run on the lib/green/lab/cons side as they are all in the 'keep parking charges' for various reasons. He said he is going in as UKIP as he would never get in as an independant. I dont think i could bring myself to vote UKIP though....

If you cared about your town not dying, you would pay to park, same with everyone else. True, you paying once a fortnight isn't going to save anything, but if everyone decided they didn't want it to die, and all paid occasionally, it would. Adding your support to a racist, bigoted party - and thus being counted in all the statistics about how many people support them - isn't going to be any good long term. Of course you are free to vote for anyone you like, whoever you think has the best policies, but just choosing a single, relatively minor, issue to focus on doesn't seem very sensible. They need a whole lot more than free parking to rejuvenate a town, and one councillor promising that (which he might not be able to deliver anyway, being one vote out of many; nor can he guarantee it will last longer than a few months) isn't going to transform the place. It needs a lot of local people deciding that it matters - choosing to spend more to park, more to buy from local shops, etc, choosing to put up with some inconvenience of having to go to different shops for things, not having as big a selection, etc. People who don't care that much will just go to the big chains anyway. Shopping local always ends up costing more, but it's what people do to protect their towns, if they care that much.

Sallyingforth · 06/04/2015 17:28

OP, look at what UKIP's national policies are, if you can read them without being sick. A local issue like parking does not justify what they want to do to the country.
In any case, if they make the car park free they will have to take the money somewhere else. Have they said where that will be?

Also there is a positive benefit in charging by the hour for town centre car parks. It allows people to come and go doing their shopping, so each space is used by several visitors during the day. Without the charge the spaces will be filled all day by office and shop workers, so shoppers can't get in at all.

Bowlersarm · 06/04/2015 17:28

Vote for who you want to, OP.

There's a reason it's anonymous.

Sirzy · 06/04/2015 17:29

Exactly runaway home.

ForalltheSaints · 06/04/2015 17:32

I would have thought that if you had a UKIP MP it would harm the image of the town and less people would visit.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 06/04/2015 17:41

I think making the whole country a less attractive place to visit and live is UKIP's master plan isn't it?

MinesAPintOfTea · 06/04/2015 17:49

The concern about ukip is what they'll do with influence. See the rise of the Nazi party as to why the the overall agenda of a party is important.

As quite a left-winger I could vote for a strong local Tory councillor if they had done a good job. I could never vote for a party which has as strong an hate agenda as ukip has.

MinesAPintOfTea · 06/04/2015 17:53

Oh and usually pay the small fee to park in our small town. Driving over a mile each way would cost more and I want to support the local town.

TalkinPeace · 06/04/2015 17:55

Look at where UKIP have had elected members : they have NEVER ACHIEVED ANYTHING

they area non party
they do not do anything, they just undo the work of others

nobody who cares about the country or the economy should vote UKIP

Stopandlook · 06/04/2015 17:55

UKIP have lots of friendly policies to buy voters like you. Check out the small print in their manifesto. Please.

Peter147 · 07/04/2015 12:05

Listen all, vote UKIP before it's too late. Ukip has nothing to do with being Racist. This is a slur by their opponents to put you off. It's become quite boring now how people keep dragging up the Racist card? Stop and think about what the word actually means? Racist word represents one's culture and race and it is not Racist to protect one's own culture. Charity begins at home and if there's any left overs, by all means share. This is what UKIP is about. Protecting British values and putting British people first. Why should we be called Racist just because we look after our own? If you're a white person and you marry a Black person, you could be classed as Racist because you prefer a different culture to your own? If you're a white person and you marry a white person, you could also be classed as Racist because you are marrying into your own race gender as opposed to other type gender? You see how the Racist tag is ridiculous? Every race gender by nature places it's own race before other races. this doesn't mean by doing so that they are discriminating against other cultures.
If you invite a stranger into your house and then he tells you that he doesn't like your taste in furniture or he moves it around to suit himself, what would you do? Well any right minded person would tell him to get out and not come back. Our Country is our House. Our forefathers fought and died in 2 World Wars to give us the freedoms that we have today.
If we allow Migrants to enter our Country, they must live by our rules and do as their host Country does. They must try and fit in by integrating into their host Country and following their Laws and cultures etc.
Unfortunately most do not but instead they want their own cultures enforced on us? They want their own Religious buildings and they want their own Religious Laws introduced in our Country. They want their own Schools to send their children to? They want us to bend over backwards to appease them? This is not someone trying to fit into their host Country, this is in fact a Racist person who is not willing to fit in?
So stop being frightened of the Racist Tag. People are now using this word "willy nilly" without even thinking about it. People are scared stiff of being called a Racist? This tag is always thrown at us by "Looney Lefties" as their favorite weapon of choice. It's old hat now. wake up and vote UKIP.
The other Political Parties, have had umpteen chances whilst in power and they have ruined our Country.
It is now the European Union that is controlling our Country and overrunning our Country with Migrants and daft Laws. UKIP will take back the control of our own Country. Give them a chance to better our Country. The other parties have cocked up time and again.
If we do not stop our Country being overrun with migrants, we will become the minority in it.
The News recently said that by the year 2070, there will be more Muslims than Christians in Europe. Muslims are killing Christians all over the world.Think of your own children's futures. UKIP is our last hope.

RufusTheReindeer · 07/04/2015 12:23

Nigel...is that you?

Peter147 · 07/04/2015 12:28

Rufus You don't have to be Nigel to understand good common sense.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 07/04/2015 12:37

I remember Peter147 from the legendary Farage MN chat! How are google alerts working out for you these days Peter?

Peter147 · 07/04/2015 12:51

Tondy, I have no idea what you are on about? You don't know me from anywhere as I have never been on your MN chat? Maybe someone else has good common sense too.

Sirzy · 07/04/2015 12:56

There is no common sense in the crap that comes out of Farages mouth, you Only have to have listened to the leaders debate o realise that.

Peter147 · 07/04/2015 13:05

Sirzy. Yes he performed much better than than the other main 3 as per viewers voting results. You're scared stiff like the rest of you lefties because you know your times up.

Sirzy · 07/04/2015 13:08

He was also voted as having performed worst or do you only like "facts" which suit you?

I'm scared of someone as dangerous as him being given any power. He has no proper policies other than "immigration is bad"

Peter147 · 07/04/2015 13:15

Absolute rubbish. Immigration is bad. They are a strain on our Education, Housing, NHS, Employment etc etc Must I go on? These subjects are some of the main points of politics. No right minded person would want their own Country overrun with immigrants? Enough said.

Sirzy · 07/04/2015 13:18

Immigration is not bad. There are plenty of benefits from immigration to. There are plenty of other issues which need tackling but he doesn't even look beyond his narrow minded bubble.

UncertainSmile · 07/04/2015 13:21

Peter, you Have strange Capitalisation issues. Do you scour the Internet looking for people having a go at Kippers? UKIP are a busted flush, there is a good chance that Farage won't win in Thanet. What then for your grand project?

UncertainSmile · 07/04/2015 13:22

Oh, and incidentally the NHS would be buggered without immigrants. Just sayin'.

OOAOML · 07/04/2015 13:25

Do people really worry this much about the cost of parking? I don't have a car, so I either walk or get the bus. I pay 50 per month for my travelcard, but if I didn't have that it would be 1.50 for each bus journey. Is parking a fortune in your area of the country?

Also, how much support do you think UKIP have in your council area? Are they likely to be elected in sufficient numbers that they will run the council and therefore get to decide on parking charges? And what service do you think they will cut to pay for it? Our council (Scotland so not up for election this year) recently had an online budget exercise where you could scale up or down how much you'd allocate to each section of the budget. Revenue lost from parking will have to be made up from elsewhere, so you should ask your candidate how this will be achieved - less street cleaning? road repairs? day centre provision for the elderly and disabled?

OOAOML · 07/04/2015 13:26

Has Claig commented on the thread yet?

UncertainSmile · 07/04/2015 13:27

Our forefathers fought and died in 2 World Wars to give us the freedoms that we have today.

Yeah, bloody Poles. Coming over here and helping us win the Battle of Britain.
