To get really pissed off that a lot of people seem to think it's acceptable to be racist towards Chinese people?

'They all look the same'

'Sum ting wong?'

'I'll have a number 28 please'

'Oh but they eat dogs and cats and small children, and are therefore scum'

Just a few of the comments I've seen on 'news' articles published by a certain 'newspaper'. I mean, I know Daily Mail readers are not known for their intelligence and tolerance, but AIBU to think that similar comments about other races would not be tolerated, or would at least be regarded as much more serious? Not just referring to the DM morons, it seems to be 'OK' to make ignorant sweeping statements about the Chinese in supposedly more educated circles, too.

The same probably applies to other east Asian races too, but I notice it more with the Chinese.

I don't think you're supposed to use 'moron' either Wink

Don't read the daily mail comments page, they're all bigoted, tinfoil hat wearing weirdos.

Christinayangstwistedsister · 25/03/2015 17:32

Any racism is wrong, when we were in Asia we regularly got ang mo go home

FlappertyFlippers · 25/03/2015 17:36

Yabu, it's not worth reading the comments in the daily mail, let alone to waste brain time getting pissed off with them.

I have been together with my Chinese dh for nearly 10 years, we have 2 dc together. Not once have we encountered any racism.

SunshineAndShadows · 25/03/2015 17:37

You're right - there were a bunch of threads on here a while ago asking 'who are these idiots eating daffodils?' Or similar. All with links to news articles clearly stating that daffodils look similar to chinese leeks and were causing poisoning in chinese people visiting the UK. Ergo Chinese visitors = idiots Hmm
Apparently they were idiots for not recognising a flower native to the UK ( the irony that none of the posters here could recognise a chinese leek did not escape me) and they ought to learn English before daring to set foot in a supermarket. I work in Asia and frequently find the casual racism displayed by some Brits towards the Chinese astonishing. Having said thst they're usually totally ignorant of China itself or any aspect of Chinese culture, so I assume they're just bigots in general

nochocolateforlentteacake · 25/03/2015 17:37

Is this a follow-on from the thread that when 'pfut' yesterday?

Its annoying that when you fill out an ethnicity form, if you are from the ME you scratch your head and go ummmmm- Asian?

xiaozhu · 25/03/2015 17:44

Christina: Two wrongs don't make a right.

Flapperty: Me too! Been with my husband for 4 years now. We've haven't really encountered any problems, although my DH was once called a 'chink' by three black kids hanging around outside our house - oh the irony. The one that pisses me off is the 'Oh he's Chinese is he...? You know what they say about Chinese men eh...?' Hadiha.

OP posts:
LaurieFairyCake · 25/03/2015 17:45

Eh? What 'do they say about Chinese men'? Confused

WorraLiberty · 25/03/2015 17:45

All racism is nasty

But as an aside, how can you read the Daily Mail and then insult its readers?

Grin @ the irony!

Christinayangstwistedsister · 25/03/2015 17:49

I have said racism is always wrong, so don't really get your point

whatlifestylechoice · 25/03/2015 17:49

Some fucker spat at my half-Chinese cousin in Dublin a few years ago and told her to go home. I would have happily ripped his head off.

seriouslypeedoff · 25/03/2015 17:51

I can't say I notice any anymore racism against Chinese people than other races tbh. Is it possibly because your husband is Chinese so you notice it more?

seriouslypeedoff · 25/03/2015 17:52

I am dying to know what people say about Chinese men, I can't think I have heard that before.

Chippednailvarnish · 25/03/2015 17:54

Completely agree with you OP. There's a casual type of racism toward the Chinese that I haven't see against other races. I often feel that some of it is purely ignorance rather than people trying to be purposely offensive.

EeekEeekEeekEeek · 25/03/2015 17:55

I find it best not to read the comments section under any online article. Anonymity really does seem to bring out the scummiest people, and indeed the scummiest in people (although not on here, obviously Wink)

ByTheWishingWell · 25/03/2015 18:01

I don't know if DM readers are particularly nasty about Chinese people, but from what I've seen of the comments on there, the only people not judged and ridiculed are probably slim, heterosexual, able-bodied, well-paid, white, and male.

I haven't noticed racism towards Chinese people being more acceptable either- no racism at all would be considered acceptable in any of the circles I'm in. Obviously it does happen though, and I'm sorry that you've encountered it.

What's a number 28? Confused

Chippednailvarnish · 25/03/2015 18:12

When I was younger I was spat at, called "pingpong", " ninja" heard endless "jokes" about slitty eyes and working in a take away.

Interestingly to celebrate Chinese new year my daughter's preschool had a Chinese take away roleplay Confused. I know they aren't meaning to be derogatory, but its 2015 and I'm more than disappointed that they even consider a take away to be representative of Chinese culture.

Christinayangstwistedsister · 25/03/2015 18:15

Chipped

Surely not!!!! Of all the amazing things they could have done for Chinese New Year

JanineStHubbins · 25/03/2015 18:17

Interestingly to celebrate Chinese new year my daughter's preschool had a Chinese take away roleplay

My first thought was 'how could you act out the different take-away dishes'.

What a bizarre thing to do.

xiaozhu · 25/03/2015 18:18

Number 28 as in takeaway, egg fly lie, etc. And apparently Chinese men have small penises... Not in my experience Grin

Perhaps I do notice it more because of dh, but I also think that there is a specific issue with the Chinese, as in some people thinking that its ok and funny to take the piss out of them but the very same people would never dream if insulting, say, black people? Why?

And i do read the DM I'm ashamed to admit Blush, generally for the gossip column but articles about China often catch my eye.

OP posts:
xiaozhu · 25/03/2015 18:21

And when I say morons I don't mean DM readers generally (I am one!), I mean the racist commenters.

OP posts:
xiaozhu · 25/03/2015 18:22

Chipped, that isShock

OP posts:
sourdrawers · 25/03/2015 18:30

Look at the things people say about Teenagers!
Daily Mail columnist the other week: "Do these creatures have brains?"
Charlie Brooker on Weekly Wipe : "Stupid Little Bastards"..

Would that get said about anyone of a particular race / ethnic group, the Elderly, Women? Unfortunately OP this is the world we have....

xiaozhu · 25/03/2015 18:33

Oh ok then sour, I'll just have to accept it then Hmm

OP posts:
sourdrawers · 25/03/2015 18:38

No you shouldn't... I'm sympathetic to your view. Wish I hadn't bothered now!
