To get really pissed off that a lot of people seem to think it's acceptable to be racist towards Chinese people?

'They all look the same'

'Sum ting wong?'

'I'll have a number 28 please'

'Oh but they eat dogs and cats and small children, and are therefore scum'

Just a few of the comments I've seen on 'news' articles published by a certain 'newspaper'. I mean, I know Daily Mail readers are not known for their intelligence and tolerance, but AIBU to think that similar comments about other races would not be tolerated, or would at least be regarded as much more serious? Not just referring to the DM morons, it seems to be 'OK' to make ignorant sweeping statements about the Chinese in supposedly more educated circles, too.

The same probably applies to other east Asian races too, but I notice it more with the Chinese.

ManofSpiel I don't understand re nip in the air and dentists appt...how are those racist things to say? Also, sorry if I'm being ignorant, is it racist to say I fancy a Chinese/Indian/Italian or whatever...when I obviosuly mean meal?

ManOfSpiel · 25/03/2015 19:27

Whatthe

They're jokes about Chinese people. Like the millions of Chinese living in Harrow

Whatthefucknameisntalreadytake · 25/03/2015 19:29

Oh, I'm still a bit confused tbh. I thought a nip in the air means it's a bit chilly, and I don't get the dentist connotations at all..how does that relate to Chinese people?
Sorry to be so thick am just curious to understand it because these are all phrases that I might use without having the slightest idea that it could cause offense.

EeekEeekEeekEeek · 25/03/2015 19:31

what: 'nip' is a racist term for a Chinese person; in the dentist joke 2:30 is spoken aloud in an impression of a 'Chinese' accent so it sounds like 'tooth hurty'.

Whatthefucknameisntalreadytake · 25/03/2015 19:33

Oh I see! Thanks for explaining, sorry for being dense.

EeekEeekEeekEeek · 25/03/2015 19:33

No worries

ComposHatComesBack · 25/03/2015 19:35

Where I grew up a group of rain is kid sprayed 'Pakis go home' on the local Chinese family 's house.

That must have been confusing.

munchkinmaster · 25/03/2015 19:37

I imagine the mail editors etc also feel a bit threatened by the rise of China's power over the old British empire. Adds an extra frisson to the old racial tension.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/03/2015 19:39

I think "nip" was a derogatory term used against Japanese people. Nippon being what Japanese people call Japan.

Racist against Chinese people insofar as it is saying they all look the same, I would think.

MaidOfStars · 25/03/2015 19:42

Japanese, surely? Nippon.

Yep, you're right. My mistake.

xiaozhu · 25/03/2015 19:48

Yeah, nip is for Japanese. But it's still racism against east Asians, and I think the same goes for attitudes towards Japanese as to those towards Chinese.

Captain, that video makes my blood boil. This is EXACTLY what I mean.

Of course chinky isn't right, it is derogatory in the same way as paki etc

My friends parents are Korean, she was born and raised in us. Some people have asked her where she comes from, her reply of course is New York , they respond by saying but where are you really from?

A few years ago I commented on a blog asking the writer to change the phrase 'We all went for a Chinky'
The blog owner and her friends wrote the most vicious replies calling me all sorts of names and saying that there was nothing wrong with the use of that phrase - apparently everyone used it and only an idiot would find it offensive.

Achuleta · 25/03/2015 20:10

'Teenagers' are a race? you learn all sorts on MN, then again........

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/03/2015 20:12

I was aghast when I saw someone referring to "going to the chinky" on my facebook. I tried to tell them why it was offensive, didn't get the impression they took it on board though. A great many people are wilfully ignorant

tryingtokeepintune · 25/03/2015 20:24

My Dd (8) used to cry and protest whenever I call her my half-Chinese girl. I found out that her friends (!) were making fun of her and telling her she looked strange and had slitty eyes etc.

Somehow the school seems to think it was all right to just tell the children not to make fun of her whereas they do stamp down hard on any form of rascism (rightly so).

rosieposey · 25/03/2015 20:25

Oh that video was vile :-(

DD1 and 2 are mixed race and they also get the 'no where do you really come from question even though they were born in Devon Hmm

Chippednailvarnish · 25/03/2015 20:26

I've been told that my English is good. I was born here Hmm

ByTheWishingWell · 25/03/2015 20:32

That video was awful ShockAngry

Is racism in general somehow more acceptable in Holland? Confused That certainly isn't the impression I've had when we've been there, but I just can't imagine that being aired in the UK, regardless of the race of the person (unless I'm being naive).

Achuleta · 25/03/2015 20:36

Just watched that video, really awful! the make judge also didn't seem to ave any self awareness about the fact people weren't really laughing, and the gasps in the audience..bet he thought he was sooooo funny!

ChildOfGallifrey · 25/03/2015 20:47

I have been NC with my maternal grandparents for nearly 10 years after my grandad refused to hold DS and then asked where we'd parked his rickshaw.

I knew he was an out and out racist so I don't know why I expected him to treat his GGS any different.
