to ask how much you are spending on your foreign summer family holiday this year?

I've spent today getting quotes for my family of 5 to spend two weeks in Spain/Italy/Greece/Turkey. I'm astounded by how much it costs to spend a fortnight away. Mark Warner quoted me over £10k for s fortnight in their cheapest resort!!!

So where are you going and how much are you paying for flights plus accommodation?

Just had 2 nights/3 days in Edinburgh.

£79 for accomodation and megabus travel for me and DD2.

That'll be it for this year, but we had a great time!

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 18/03/2015 00:31

£4.7k, two adults, two teenagers (who are priced as adults now) and a 4 year old - two weeks AI in a Holiday Village type place with waterpark in Turkey. Early August.

We will also be off to Devon a few times throughout the summer as we have a holiday home there (think more caravan than cottage), but that only costs us petrol & spending money now as we finished paying for it a few years ago.

That said, we are not rich. Holidays are what we choose to spend most of our money on - neither of us smoke, drink or really go out anywhere to socialise. We don't by expensive clothes (supermarket labels or Primark mainly) and have older cars that we own outright. I've never been in a beauty salon or paid to have my nails done etc. etc.

I also don't quite understand how one holiday can cost £30k?! One holiday?

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 18/03/2015 00:34

Wow, Mamazilla!

Is that a special, one off, holiday? Or would you do a trip of that cost every year?

Mamazilla · 18/03/2015 00:46

We usually have one big trip a year plus several smaller ones. This Xmas is a bit more expensive than the norm due to an unfortunate 'misunderstanding' when DH booked it, but it is not unusual for us to spend £20k+.

It's all relative though and not a big proportion of 2 x top end City salaries.

HicDraconis · 18/03/2015 01:22

Our summer holiday last year cost around $20k and was spent visiting the UK in winter :) 2 weeks in Wiltshire and 2 weeks in London over Christmas. We paid flights/accommodation plus food (self catering for 2 weeks and eating out for 2 weeks) and activities (Harry Potter tour, west end musical), plus kennels for 2 dogs and a cat for 4 weeks (was over $1000 just for that...)

We are lucky enough to live in a tourist destination so most holidays will be spent at home this year (also going to try and sort the garden out!) but we'll probably spend a few thousand over the winter holidays going skiing - maybe spending a week at a resort for the boys to have proper lessons, and then the odd weekend or midweek day at the local area.

With 2 dogs, cat and 12 chickens going away for any length of time is reasonably expensive, it's easier to stay at home but do holiday stuff from home.

Branleuse · 18/03/2015 05:46

we are also going away at the end of may, doing a eurocamp 3bed mobile home in the languedoc, argeles sur mer, for 12 nights, which was £600 inc crossings.

QueenFuri · 18/03/2015 06:56

£0 sixth year with no holiday Sad. We haven't managed to save enough for our 7 day trip to Germany to visit my dad. So it shall be next year I hope I'm in dire need of a break! Though we would have saved enough if the car didn't break, DC having birthdays and passports running out!!

Lordofmyflies · 18/03/2015 06:58

We going to Barcelona for 4 nights before boarding a cruise around the med.
With flights and food on board it has cost £7000 for four of us.

Ragwort · 18/03/2015 07:04

Zero.

I find holidays hugely over rated and would rather save my money Grin. We do have a small ish budget so could afford to go away but I just can't bring myself to spend so much on just a week or two. We are lucky to live in a nice touristy part of the country and will probably visit family for a few days or maybe DH will take DS camping.

BeeInYourBonnet · 18/03/2015 07:21

Just shows how much Summer holidays put the premium up. We are doing Eurocamp for 12 days (like Branleuse ) albeit in quite an expensive region/resort, and its costing £1700 for August, plus we will have a very big petrol (and food) bill!

BeeInYourBonnet · 18/03/2015 07:22

I am expecting to spend £3000 in total.

ssd · 18/03/2015 07:35

sometimes I look at these fantastic holidays and think "who on earth can afford that"....well now I know!!

mind you a holiday with the kids is what you make it, we've had some great times making sandcastle on Uk beaches, although picnics in the rain aren't much fun!

Sickoffrozen · 18/03/2015 07:39

£1400 Portugal one week, 5 star hotel for 2 adults and one child.

Jackieharris · 18/03/2015 07:46

Not going anywhere this year.

Planning on doing Orlando next year which we are budgeting £6k for (2a,2c).

I wouldn't go to a euro resort if it cost more than £2k all in.

I'd rather just do more UK day trips/ the odd 1 night stay in cheap B&Bs.

TheWordFactory · 18/03/2015 07:51

I think it's always worth shooing around.

I'm currently pricing up a trip to India for October and have had quote ranging from 7k to 11.5k. With little diffetence in the content.

Shocking really.

bedraggledmumoftwo · 18/03/2015 07:58

£4k but having a splurge. Two weeks in 5*luxury all inclusive in Caribbean, business class flights with ba, upgraded using avios. But this is a bargain, flights bought in ba sale and upgraded and dd2 still (just) an infant- figure she can snuggle with dd1 on lie flat bed! And I got the hotel to price match plus 10% off because i found it cheaper, saving another £350 ish. So it sounds like a lot, but actually probably a real bargain never to be seen again- certainly not after dd1 starts school as we are going in June!

kwerty · 18/03/2015 07:59

I'm coveting a hotel barge trip through the Loire valley, chef on board, every whim catered for. Six of us - inc Dc and their partners - £15000 for six nights on board Shock

Shantishanti · 18/03/2015 08:04

About 2.5k all in (including insurance, cattery, diesel etc) for 2 adults and 1 child camping in Europe for 3 weeks. We save money every month towards the summer holiday. Camping is my idea of heaven, although I know for many it's the opposite!

We booked our flights to Corfu as soon as they were released in October, as we always do. They cost us £1500 for 5 of us. Just had a look and they would cost double that now. ALWAYS book early!
Booked a 4 bed detached house by a beach even earlier, 1500 for two weeks.

So, my advice is book early and use owners direct.

ThatIsNachoCheese · 18/03/2015 08:08

I realise my book early advice is pretty worthless for you right now op Blush

Have a look on Agni Travel for accommodation, and then search for flights around what is available. The euro is so strong right now you can still get a bargain.

Taz1212 · 18/03/2015 08:10

Marrakech for a long weekend at Easter- probably £1,500.

St Anne's for a week at the start of the summer. The flat is £350 and we'll probably spend that again.

Turkey for 10 days at the end of the summer. The villa is £1600, the flights were about £800 and I have quite a lot planned so it will probably cost around £4500 in total.

CrystalCove · 18/03/2015 08:15

£6600 for 3 weeks in America, road trip from the Grand Canyon to Vegas to California. BA flights, car hire and hotels booked through Trailfinders and we also booked a beach cottage in San Diego ourselves for 5 days at the end. That's for me, DH and DSs who are 13 and 7. Truly a one off and we are saving like mad at the moment. Usually we drive to France from Scotland and hire a cottage with it's own pool, considerably cheaper! Can usually get a cottage for around £600 for a week and then it's sbut £500 for diesel and £150 for tolls. We take lots food with us to.

Binkybix · 18/03/2015 08:19

Nothing this year. Trying to save after moving house.

If saving goes well we might sneak in a week somewhere warm before DC2 comes along.

SconessMcFloness · 18/03/2015 08:21

3 weeks in California - so far costing

£4k flights
£700 car hire
£600 boarding for dog
£3-4k on accommodation
Then probably £3-£4k on food and entertainment

And then around £2k on weekend breaks.

We don't normally spend this much - it's kind of snowballed. Blush We'll probably do something closer to home next year, we like to mix it up.
