to ask how much you are spending on your foreign summer family holiday this year?

I've spent today getting quotes for my family of 5 to spend two weeks in Spain/Italy/Greece/Turkey. I'm astounded by how much it costs to spend a fortnight away. Mark Warner quoted me over £10k for s fortnight in their cheapest resort!!!

So where are you going and how much are you paying for flights plus accommodation?

Week in my parents' holiday house in Wales = food/petrol only approx £300
Week is Disneyland/Paris = £2500 including generous spending budget
Week in Center Parcs = £2000 including spa treatments
DH and I only 2 x weekend city breaks (which relatively are the most costly) approx £1500 for both.

Ideally I'd prefer to splash out one £7k on two amazing weeks somewhere but we prefer fewer gaps between each break.

Too much for us to afford a summer holiday abroad right now. We're emigrating to Canada in the summer, so that's taking all our savings. No Christmas presents for us this year, just something small for the two kiddies.

We haven't done holidays abroad for a long time though. Usually stick to the UK :( Not that we're not adventurous, but just don't have the money for that luxury at the moment :( The last holiday abroad I did take was with my parents and it cost a good £5k.

G1raffe · 11/04/2016 18:09

Still that assumes people have that/are spending it in the first place! Id never waste money like that and certainly don't have 4grand to fritter away.

flingingmelon · 11/04/2016 18:12

No idea. We gamble and book random choices as late as possible. Sometimes we get stung and it's expensive, but usually we get a really good deal.

We rarely book resorts though. We stick to smaller places and villas.

Potterwolfie · 11/04/2016 18:18

After years living overseas and travelling a lot we're looking forward to staying in the UK this year Smile.

We'll go to stay with family by the beach in Cornwall so accommodation is free, and visit the Lakes, in family caravan. We also want to explore the north east coast around Alnwick for Harry Potter - themed fun at some point between May Bank hol and the end of August. Can't wait! Grin

icapturethecastle · 11/04/2016 18:21

Croatia - £2000 for 2 weeks self catering travelling from Split To Dubrovnik 2 adults/2 children. We will travel down the coast by ferry. All booked online separately. Beautiful country!

Stillwishihadabs · 11/04/2016 18:27

G1raffe I do appreciate that we are lucky to have the choice, but I also know others in the same income bracket as Us (dsis is one, BBf is another) who say they can't afford to go abroad then shop at wiaitrose and regularly buy lunch out.

Savagebeauty · 11/04/2016 18:39

I don't have £4 grand to fritter away
But it all depends in your income doesn't it?
If you're a high earner, £4 grand is nothing.

G1raffe · 11/04/2016 18:45

Oh happy to believe it's nothing to some people just convincing yourself that you're saving if you're not spending money on something you wouldn't anyway spend on.

My dad still drives miles for cheaper petrol (in his Merc)... I'm still sure he's not really saving giving how far extra he's driving...

Stillwishihadabs · 11/04/2016 19:02

Some people skied how it's possible to spends 1,000s on a holiday- I explained how I do it. It's all about personal choice, I would rather live more cheaply all year round in order to have 2 or 3 foreign holidays a year. As I said I know people who "can't afford to go away" but eat out every weekend and drink every night.

Sistersweet · 11/04/2016 19:11

About £1800 next week for 5 days, just under £4K for 10 days in the Italian lakes in August which is for 5 of us, all booked separately. £120 on a girls weekend in France with no Accomodation costs, £580 for 4 of us to stay in a friend's villa in Spain in July for 5 days, If I ever get round to booking it DH and I are going to Venice for 3 nights. Flights are £85 total on air miles and I will look to spend about £400 on a hotel. I've also reserved a hotel for a week over Xmas in the Canaries but flights are looking prohibitive at the moment so may cancel but have budgeted about £3500 for that.

mirrorballs · 11/04/2016 19:19

£1250 for me, DH and DD4, 1 week AI tenerife Holiday Village via First Choice. Find it easier to do AI while DD is small.

febel · 11/04/2016 19:53

I am obviously well out of touch...a lot of you seem to spend a LOT more than us...although admittedly didn't go abroad with kids last year (house in Cornwall near beach, 4 adults...cos our "kids" are classed as that now, plus our dog..house had a garden and orangarie with snooker table, in school hols..have to unfortunately due to jobs and college...£1000) Year before , Portugal, huge villa , with own pool (am spoilt like this!) in Vilamoura, prob around not more than £2000..can't remember properly and eldest flew out separately due to commitments...her flight cost more than ours cos a weekend one. Last year also...cruise for two adults, all inclusive, for a week inc return flights to Dubrovnik, £1600 . Was amazing!
This year..nothing so far as not sure where to go or who with!!

LikeAbatOutOfHell · 11/04/2016 20:25

Just me and DH, as kids are all grown and flown. Taking our self built camper van over to Europe, not sure how much it will cost, euro tunnel paid for with tesco vouchers so just depends on how expensive the campsites we stay on are

Broody1976 · 11/04/2016 21:02

£2.5k for 2 weeks SC in Majorca in August - plus spends... We usually got to Lanzarote & budget €150 per day for the 3 of us... Am hoping Majorca will be the same-ish.

TheFairyCaravan · 11/04/2016 21:08

£1108 for 12 days in Fuerteventura AI just DH and I. Kids don't want to come anymore.

We're going the end of next week! Can't wait for some sun! ☀️

emilybrontescorset · 11/04/2016 21:13

£5000 for 2 weeks in Orlando.
4 of us. Plus the cost of park tickets.

dizzytomato · 11/04/2016 21:27

30k on a holiday isn't as hard to spend as it seems it is when you factor in the exchange rate. In South America nights out, food, restuarants and accomodation are not as expensive as Europe. 30k sterling is $600,000 in pesos, having 600,000 in your pocket is like having 600,000 sterling to spend on a UK holiday. I don't doubt someone can do it. I just marvel at the sheer amount. The locals must have loved that family.

ihatethecold · 11/04/2016 21:56

Well at least they are spending money into the local economy.

wiltingfast · 11/04/2016 22:13

About £2.5k on ferry (from Ireland) holiday to France. 18 days of bliss Smile spending 2 nights around Cherbourg then off to the campsite for 2w. Family of 4.

Can't wait.

Bedsheets4knickers · 11/04/2016 22:49

10 days . Menorca . 2 adults 2 kids . Self catering 2.7k August

VeryFoolishFay · 11/04/2016 23:11

£1700 for 2 weeks in really nice self catering gite in south west of France for 10 (multi generational families!) with infinity pool shared with 2 other families. Eurotunnel courtesy of tesco club card. Rather then hiring a MPV, we're going to buy a cheapish one so my DH and DF can share the driving, then sell it when we get back!

moreginrequired · 12/04/2016 01:09

someone may have mentioned this too but eurocamp have lovely chalets and you get great discounts (through NHS discounts etc) or can camp. this year we will be at one of their camps in holland we are 450 for a 3 bed chalet for 10 days in summer Grin, sadly we are sharing with the inlaws Sad

HerRoyalNotness · 12/04/2016 01:41

Zero, unemployed for the last year and can't spend on a holiday.

I've got to find a way to entertain the DC for the 3mth holidays without spending much. Thank fuck we have a pool and it will be hot. I'll make myself a pina colada a couple of times and just pretend.

Athrawes · 12/04/2016 01:52

About $14000 (7000 pounds) on six weeks in the UK, flying from New Zealand with a week in Berlin and a week in Tokyo. It would be cheaper to do the other way around.
