I've spent today getting quotes for my family of 5 to spend two weeks in Spain/Italy/Greece/Turkey. I'm astounded by how much it costs to spend a fortnight away. Mark Warner quoted me over £10k for s fortnight in their cheapest resort!!!

So where are you going and how much are you paying for flights plus accommodation?

This is why we don't do package holidays or summer. This year we have 10 days in Italy over may/June half term (inset days help).
Next year the 5 of us are planning 3 weeks in the USA - flights, accommodation and car hire will be under £6k (although half the time the accommodation is free as we're staying with family) but the rest of the time it's city prices with new york included. I think it'll be £7k once everything is covered.

Centre parks can be ridiculous. We went last autumn with extended family, 7 adults and two children in one of their largest lodges. It was about £900 between us for the week over bonfire night which wasn't too bad but I dread to think how much we spent while we were there, we spent a fortune and we catered for ourselves a fair bit!

Shawser78 · 11/04/2016 14:59

Oh and park tickets which are £2k so make that £6k

UptownFunk00 · 11/04/2016 14:59

Wow lots of amazing holidays.

30k on a holiday? Wow is everything made out of Gold?

We are just spending £300 on a trip away in the UK with £150 spending money for food and activities for the week.

In a few years we will go on holiday abroad. I'm hoping it will be around 1,500 to 2k maybe up to 2.5k Max for 2 adults and 2 young kids.

Charliechuck94 · 11/04/2016 15:00

I go through travel republic. Just spent about £650 on a ten day holiday to Spain, 2 adults, 2 kids. Self catering as I like the space and kids never like the hotel food. But we go to this place every year and love to eat at restaurants. Usually take about €1000 spreading with us. Maybe extra depending on activities planned.Grin

I watch threads like these with morbid interest.

Mostly because my family has never been away. It is simply not affordable at all.

It is like watching some sort of television drama when people talk about spending £20K to go away - that is more than my family's entire annual income.

I'd sell a kidney for £100 just to take the DCs camping for a week.

dizzytomato · 11/04/2016 15:03

I used to live in Argentina and I'm wondering what she's spending 30k on! Seriously right? What's that, like 600,000 pesos? Even if you factor in the flights which would 5k tops. It must have been an amazing holiday!

LimitedSedition · 11/04/2016 15:03

I don't think DP will ever want to go abroad, so I am planning on taking DD on holiday, just us two; hosteling or something. This is a great thread for ideas.

£1000 for 2 adults, 1 teen and 2 under 2 to Portugal for 7 nights, 4 star, all inclusive on the beach. Going in early October though so in term time. Will take £300 spending money as teen will be swimming with dolphins at marine world Smile

talllikejerryhall · 11/04/2016 15:26

I had a great experience working with a lady called Jackie, who understood that I didn't want to bankrupt myself for the sake of a lovely holiday, and sorted something really great, within a reasonable budget.

Her address is: [email protected]

Hope you sort something fabulous out!

heron98 · 11/04/2016 15:27

We are flying to Geneva and spending some time in the Alps.

It's cost us £500 quid return on the plane (for 5 people). We are staying in an airbnb that will cost us 210 euros for 7 nights.

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 11/04/2016 15:30

30k on a holiday isn't as hard to spend as it seems. Can't remember how many was in her family but say 2 adults and 2 kids.

Business class flight. Easily 17.5k for that distance and the fact that it is a two stop holiday.

5 star hotels could easily cost 1k a night (can't remember how long the trip was) esp if they are having two rooms. Add in spending money for meals out, trips etc. Easily done.

fluffypacman · 11/04/2016 15:31

Nothing. We are going to stay with family in the summer hols. With x2 rounds of nursery fees money is tight. This way we'll treat it as a holiday, see family and the kids get to go to the beach which is all they're worried about. We might go away for a weekend or two camping with a handmedown tent too and have 5 days in center park to look forward to this spring. I'm looking forward to it. Holidays on a shoestring.

Savagebeauty · 11/04/2016 15:37

How many bedrooms in a villa makes a difference too. We always booked a 3 bed for 4 of us, so the children had their own room, even when small.
And I want everything I have at home...so well appointed kitchen, dishwasher, washing machine etc, excellent WiFi and decent channels on TV, power showers, non temperamental hot water

Natkingcole9 · 11/04/2016 15:38

1800 for 12 nights in vilamoura, Portugal for partner and I. 5* hotel bed and brekkie. Pretty happy with the price last year we paid over £3k for similar to Lanzarote. We love our hols though, we live for them Grin

Amberdiamond · 11/04/2016 15:45

We have had a couple of lovely self catering holidays in the Greek Islands the last couple of years. We went with Thomas Cook and each time it cost us about £2500 for 2 adults and 2 children in August plus £1400 spending money.

Amberdiamond · 11/04/2016 15:46

I should say that was for 2 weeks.

Niklepic · 11/04/2016 15:51

7 nights B&B in Portugal for £700 for 5 of us. It's a specialist place for children with disabilities and as were going with 7 other families there was enough of us to fill it so we've got it heavily subsidised. The expense has been for flights.

dancemom · 11/04/2016 15:52

1 week
Crete
AI
dd and I
4 star water park resort
£1K
Can't wait!!!

ThereIsIron · 11/04/2016 15:57

3.5k for 2 weeks half-board in Turkey for 5 of us in July.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 11/04/2016 16:02

This is why we're investing in a touring caravan. Should pay for itself in about 4 yrs. Means we can go to south of france/northern spain/switzerland etc. I cannot see how anyone can afford to spend upwards of 3k a year, every year (key point), on holidays in July/Aug.
Even Eurocamp is about £2,500 before travel costs in Aug. And the med is too cold for me in May/Oct (except Cyprus).

We are doing Florida this August though. It's a familymoon as getting married in June. Saved hard plus DH (to be) is an awesome negotiator and has air miles (or whatever they are called now). We have 3 weeks in a 5bed villa with pool, all park disney tickets, car hire and FIRST CLASS flights home (prem economy outbound) for about £8k. I am giddy with excitement. We land back the day before DD starts juniors and DS stars reception, so the flat beds will be handy!

We priced 3 wks std flights Virgin holiday in a disney hotel for £12k so DH is a star in my eyes.

umiaisha · 11/04/2016 16:07

We are going to Dubai in June, 10 days half board costing just over £4000 for 5 of us (dd2 is only 15 months so no real flight costs for her)

We are also going to Florida with family in the school summer holidays. Costing about £6k with park tickets, car hire etc. We don't normally have 2 holidays but had an inheritance from an old aunt so thought we would this year.

Lukesme · 11/04/2016 16:39

1.5k 10 days me and two kids . Penthouse app in small hotel with pool in malta. Did same as year booked hotel direct and flight separately. At that price eating out is fine. Travelled a lot before kids and I refuse to pay inflated prices for a package. I did one year AI and was bored stupid.appt sleeps 5 so plenty of room if anyone can join us for a couple of days. Pool is shady but that suits me and the kids in malta in august. As a single mum I am very happy with malta, drive on the same side ,medical care is similar standard to ours, the British legacy means it is well organised and everyone speaks English. Just wish it was nt quite so hot.

LuckyM · 11/04/2016 17:15

Jeez Mamazilla that's a lot of holidaying. Do you need anyone to hold your bags? Seriously I agree, it seems hard to find anything under £4K for a week by the time you factor in school holiday flight costs.

Stillwishihadabs · 11/04/2016 17:28

I put £200 in a holiday bank account each month. So £2400 a year. Do does similar so we have roughly £5k to spend. I reckon this is the money I save by shopping at Lidl rather than sainsbos or tescos. We also both generally take a packed lunch (£5 a day ?) and I have given up takeaway coffees (£2:50 a throw) 2 adults doing that saves £3900 a year.
