to ask how much you are spending on your foreign summer family holiday this year?

I've spent today getting quotes for my family of 5 to spend two weeks in Spain/Italy/Greece/Turkey. I'm astounded by how much it costs to spend a fortnight away. Mark Warner quoted me over £10k for s fortnight in their cheapest resort!!!

So where are you going and how much are you paying for flights plus accommodation?

Posting for ideas.

Never done a holiday over a grand before and been to France /all over the UK. But wondering whether to do a resort or villa somewhere.

Piemernator · 10/04/2016 18:56

We had a weeks canal boat holiday and alos week in Wales last year and it was about 1.5k.

Last trip abroad was a month in America staying in Cape Cod, Boston and Chicago. We didn't ever actually add up the full cost at least 10k and we stayed with one of my brothers for a week.

ihatethecold · 10/04/2016 19:01

We are taking our 2 teens to Koh Samui in the school holidays.
Staying in a 2 bedroomed villa on an eco resort for 10 nights then on to Bangkok for 4 nights.
Cost is 7K not including spending money.
The only reason we can do this is my dh will retire next year and get a lump sum so we figured we should do this before our eldest decides to stop traveling with us.

I am very excited.

pandarific · 10/04/2016 19:03

Well, it's just me and DP, but we've just spent 425PP for a week AI in a FABULOUS hotel - the Mitsis Laguna Beach in Crete.

I booked through Sunshine.co.uk after exhaustive research - they had by far the cheapest rates.

I know Coconutty, I'm Shock at some of these. I COULD have paid 1000 GBP+ for our holiday, but would I pay it? Would I feck. I'd much rather shop around obsessively and get a screamingly good deal. It's just how I'm wired.

JackShit · 10/04/2016 19:09

How fucking crass is this thread?!

pandarific · 10/04/2016 19:10

I don't think it's crass JackShit - it's interesting! I love talking about holidays and hearing about other people's!

Savagebeauty · 10/04/2016 19:10

Why is it crass?

Orda1 · 10/04/2016 19:13

Some of these are crazy, I've stayed in lovely places in a lot of these destinations and it's cost much, much less!

SquidgeyMidgey · 10/04/2016 19:14

I'm amazed at some of these prices, we don't do summer abroad as we're all crap in the heat Grin

BeALert · 10/04/2016 19:14

We live in the US and might drive over to Canada for the day. Does that count as a foreign holiday?

pandarific · 10/04/2016 19:22

If I could give a little tightwad tip for cheaper holidays...

Book flights and accommodation separately. To do this most efficiently, load up skyscanner.co.uk and put in your dates (use the option where you can look at whole months/the whole year if you are flexible enough). Then select the 'go anywhere' option. Pick a location based on where you'd like to go and how much you can pay and save your search.

THEN go and look at your accommodation. Check Trivago, voyageprive, mydealpage.co.uk and Sunshine.co.uk and make a shortlist. Avoid thomson, first choice, all those guys - hugely overpriced.

Finally, fire up tripadvisor.co.uk and go through the shortlist to pick your preferred place - I'd advise a place with a 4.5 out of 5 score, they're usually fairly safe!

The end! Grin I feel like I could give a pro a run for their money at this stage! Anyone want to set me a challenge??

Marmitelover55 · 10/04/2016 19:24

Haven't RTWFT but we are going to Crete in July - flights are about £1,000 for the 4 of us, hire car £400 and bills for 2 weeks (with private pool) is £2,600. It's a big bills though that sleeps 8, so we will be rattling around. Can't wait though.

We usually get the ferry to France, stay a week in a cheap gite in the Dordogne and then a week in a eurocamp park on the coast, costing about £1,800.

Marmitelover55 · 10/04/2016 19:24

*villa!

Genx77 · 10/04/2016 19:30

Pandarific, I would normally agree but sometimes it's cheaper to do the package, particularly if book with an airline rather than a travel agent. I thought booking everything separately would be cheaper for us but actually by the time I'd costed flights, hotel, luggage, transfers, it worked out £600 cheaper to book the flight and hotel together.
Agree with whoever posted about Thomson/Thomas Cook et al, identical holiday to ours but with shitty 2am flights was £600 more expensive. Yet they are market leaders.

ilovesprouts · 10/04/2016 19:33

I'm going to port d'alcudia 2 adults one child 7 nights inclusive £2,245 first week in August my first time flying and my ds2.Grin

Katieweasel · 10/04/2016 19:36

Week in Portugal in July for DH and I whilst DS at Cub Camp. £700 for fisherman cottage, Ryanair flights for £100 and £75 transfer to/from airport. (Cub camp £130 for the week - bargain!)
Long weekend in Venice with DM, DSis and DN £250 each for flight and B&B.
Week in beach side holiday cottage in Devon in August for a bargainous £510!
Booking.com and owners direct and budget airlines all the way for me!

pandarific · 10/04/2016 19:39

You're right it's sometimes cheaper to do the package Genx77. Always best to check first! I stand by my tightwad ways Grin

Buttercupsandaisies · 10/04/2016 19:40

6.5k two weeks Florida for last two weeks July (our kids finish early). Inc car, Disney tickets and dining plan in a moderate Disney hotel for 2 adults and 2 kids (11,9).

Buttercupsandaisies · 10/04/2016 19:41

For cheAp breaks abroad defo do a package - unless cooking every day AI saves a good 1k over a week. I'd never pay £1.5k for week sc for example if I could get AI for a grand more

Hulababy · 10/04/2016 19:41

Just been pricing up California and Vegas for a fortnight in the summer - eek! Not yet booked, but looking at the options. Schoo holiday long haul is never cheap though I guess.
