to ask how much you are spending on your foreign summer family holiday this year?

I've spent today getting quotes for my family of 5 to spend two weeks in Spain/Italy/Greece/Turkey. I'm astounded by how much it costs to spend a fortnight away. Mark Warner quoted me over £10k for s fortnight in their cheapest resort!!!

So where are you going and how much are you paying for flights plus accommodation?

We prioritise a lot over stuff for our house. I'd prefer to spend money on travel, after school activities for the kids, nights out for DH and I etc etc etc. Our house contains three small children, a teenager and two adults who work full time: it's never going to look great! I think we get much more out of "experiences" and time together as a family than "stuff" and I try to remind myself of that when I lust after "stuff".

We decide on our priorities each year...sometimes we are moving house or renovating or Dh is taking a salary cut. On a normal year we'll spend about 10% pre tax on holidays.
I think it's good to show your dcs that you have to make sacrafices to get what you want, sometimes that means we cut the holiday budget, sometimes we get to splurge.....but we don't go on holiday on borrowed money.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 21/03/2015 14:48

We prioritise family holidays above stuff for the house. Our DC are 9 and 10 and growing up so fast. I think they will remember family holidays more than nice carpets and sofas (our furniture is mostly inherited from grandparents). We can sort the house out properly once they've left home to get on with their own lives.

The only thing I consistently prioritise over holidays is school fees.

about £900 going to the Netherlands for Easter (theme park then centerparcs)

then about £1100 for France in August in a caravan, 10 days

the kids keep nagging for a 'proper' holiday

...we could get a new kitchen for the price of a couple of weeks in Greece

[stingy]

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 21/03/2015 16:10

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 21/03/2015 16:52

Grin

you're going a bit later in the year, aren't you?

Celticlass2 · 21/03/2015 17:06

Well done Hoover What a bargain! love travelling by train as well. Done many Eurostar trips to Paris and Brussels, but never all the way down to the South of France.

weeoclock · 21/03/2015 17:10

Me , my friend and our 4 kids have 10 days in portugal in middle of august, in resort with pool and by the sea. Will end up costing about 850 per family Including accommodation, flights etc. Think the key is to book flights early, book accommodation separately and to be flexible about travel. We are flying to and from different airports which has saved at least 300 per family.

warmblue · 21/03/2015 17:23

We prioritise holidays (and other things) over our house (actually we don't even have a house, we have a flat). Our home is basic and functional but we don't care too much about how it looks. We've also prioritised it over having a bigger family (just three of us, although that makes it harder to fit into the usual family holiday deal) - a small family means we can splash out a fair bit on leisure activities in general, but still not need to work crazy hours.

Calamityjude · 21/03/2015 17:27

We are going to the Netherlands and hopefully Efteling for a day. Cost around £1,000 accommodation and travel for 5 of us. Not sure what we will spend on food, but will self cater where we can.

Flights only to Jordan for 5 £1800, we will be staying with family so no accommodation cost, thankfully.

I love holidays, would like to do more, but with 3 dc and 2 adults it certainly gets very expensive.

Bonkerz · 21/03/2015 18:17

Open up: ours are caravans with 3 bedrooms and the August one is travel lodge.

How exciting!!!!

Yes! We are going too, its all booked, deliriously excited Grin, DD already too excited we are there for 3 nights, and a night in bruges.

cant wait.

ours is £400 for accmd and park tickets but that will be less as by the time we pay balance euro will be even lower and part paid ferry on tesco vouchers, it was £58 return.

JillyR2015 · 21/03/2015 18:51

It just depends on your income really. Most years in total through the year £20k but that's just because I earn quite a bit. if we've had a year with less money or house buying it's less. That's skiing at Christmas and somewhere hot in the summer (Barbados this year and Val D'Isere already booked for Christmas). We could easily manage without holidays if I earned less.

Iamblossom · 21/03/2015 18:58

2 weeks in kefalonia, flights, private villa with pool, hire car, valet parking, food and spending money, 4 of us, will probably work out around £6k

SpecificOcean · 21/03/2015 19:15

Budapest- flights are paid for £250. need to add on hotel not booked it yet. Just me and DH- DC didn't want to go.
DC wanted to go camping with school instead so that will be £260.
We had our main holiday in the USA at Feb half term. £5000
Will have a few days in London, but have friends who lend us their apartment for free, so just petrol and spending money.

HeyheyheyGoodbye · 21/03/2015 19:24

£1371 for DH and I, all-inclusive, Spain. We didn't go anywhere last year due to finances so I'm really looking forward to it Smile

MerdeAlor · 21/03/2015 19:28

Balaerics for one week at easter 850euros

Month long road trip down the east coast of america 10,000euros

This is unusual for us, normally we spend about a third of that amount.

backonthewagon · 10/04/2016 12:06

£1615 to a First Choice AI Splashworld hotel in Estepona. That's for DP, DS (10) and myself. 19th-26th July.

Florabeebaby · 10/04/2016 13:34

Zombie!

TheSnowFairy · 10/04/2016 13:42

£5400 for 5 of us to the Canaries for 10 days AI in August.

Last year we paid £3100 for 10 days AI in Turkey but the Easter holidays were so bloody early this year anywhere abroad was v expensive.

I hate booking holidays, just want to make one phone call and have it sorted. This is what puts me off using sites with owners directly - is it really easy to do and are the flights easy to book too?

Lazyafternoon · 10/04/2016 14:03

Blooming heck - I thought £1000 was a lot to spend on a holiday!!! Some of you are spending many 1000's! I don't think I could ever justify spending more than 2k on a holiday - what if it rained or we all got tummy bug or we just had a crap time there's so much other stuff we could've done (if we had that much money) than lie on a beach for a week or two.

We be making good use of our tent and having a few weekends camping in the UK as and when weather looks good. We've also booked a couple of family friendly festivals over the summer. If DH gets some overtime we might go to Algarve for a long weekend at the end of August/beginning September.

maggiethemagpie · 10/04/2016 14:05

Going to Jamaica in two weeks time with two kids, 5 and 2.5. 10 nights in a 4 star hotel all inclusive, 3.9 k for everything including flights.

Its our honeymoon so managed to persuade the school to give the older one permission to take leave, or else it would have been more like 6k in the holidays. Will be the last big trip for a while I think!

M00nUnit · 10/04/2016 14:11

£4k for family of four, 4* all inclusive hotel with water park in southern Spain in August.
