to ask how much you are spending on your foreign summer family holiday this year?

I've spent today getting quotes for my family of 5 to spend two weeks in Spain/Italy/Greece/Turkey. I'm astounded by how much it costs to spend a fortnight away. Mark Warner quoted me over £10k for s fortnight in their cheapest resort!!!

So where are you going and how much are you paying for flights plus accommodation?

OP posts:

Post - people were asked what they spent and the whole point is that it's interesting to see the full spectrum of responses.

The only stealth boasts I see are are the ones saying I spent x on summer hols (which was the question) AND I've spent x on 2 other holidays this year Smile

YellowTulips · 20/03/2015 23:50

Slight derail - I confess I don't get families that spend thousands on cruise holiday's. Always sounds like Butlins afloat to me Grin

However I've never been on a cruise so appreciate

studiozero · 20/03/2015 23:53

YellowTulips I strongly suspect that the OP probably along with a lot of others, didn't think that many people had multiple expensive holidays throughout the year and that asking about the summer one was sufficient

I couldn't cope with a cruise - I like adventuring off the beaten track.

YellowTulips · 20/03/2015 23:53

Agh pressed post by accident.

Meant to say I appreciate I may be prejudiced against it - but can't really see the point of not "going" somewhere - same as all inclusive resorts - why? Travel to me means experiencing something new/different - but each to their own Grin

defineme · 20/03/2015 23:58

Thank you makemineapinot that is really helpful. I will be ready come next autumn!

Weebirdie · 21/03/2015 00:14

A cruise is fabulous and just as there are cruise lines that could be like Butlins afloat, (my favourite holiday was Butlins when I was a wee gilr) there are other cruise lines such as Cunard, Holland America, Azamara, Crystal and Silverseas that are something very different.

And if you like to experience off the beaten track then a cruise is the ideal holiday to help you experience that. Granted the one Im doing to the Med in May isnt that adventurous but the one Im doing to Alaska in September is, as the one Im doing to Vietnam, China, Japan, and the Phillipines next year.

£1000 for a week in Cornwall with dp and 3 dcs.

Normally dp pays for the holidays but this year I've saved up to treat us all. I can't wait Smile

PatrickStarisabadbellend · 21/03/2015 00:33

We just got back from a 5star hotel in lake Windermere. It was beautiful Smile

As a couple we spent £320 in total excluding food and spending money for a week in southern Italy over easter. It was magical with all the easter celebrations. The weather was shit.
As a family of three our last holiday two years ago was one week in Barcelona and one week tarragona. Best holiday ever.
Flights for 3 people easyjet £600 and hotel for two weeks 3 and 4 star about £600 as well. This is in August. So much cheaper to plan your own holiday.

Celticlass2 · 21/03/2015 09:29

For me, booking flights early is the key. Sometimes, if we don't mind where we are going, but just have a vague area in mind, then we wait until flights are released, see which are the best value/ good flight times etc, and book them.
Did this a few times, and ended up going to places that we may not have bothered to holiday before.
From my experience, the cost of flights ( in school hols) usually only go up, so once these are sorted we can relax a bit about booking our accomadation.

globetrotter141 · 21/03/2015 09:40

Less than £500 for flights and accommodation to lake Garda for 8 nights. Euro camps and out of school holidays, but eurocamps will be the way to go for us going by the prices you guys are quoting!

BudsBeginingSpringinSight · 21/03/2015 10:46

Its always cheaper to plan own break, unless you get knock down last min bargin, all these holiday companies have lots of wages to pay, its not a Charity.

Globe that sounds amazing - lake garda. is that with euro camp, confused.

Bonkerz · 21/03/2015 10:50

Not abroad but this year we are having a few holidays.

Feb: Wales £215 for 7 nights
April: butlins £350 for 3 nights inc food
July: hemsby £275 for 7 nights
Aug: £145 3 nights southend
Oct: Blackpool £315 for 7 nights

This is for family of 6!

Openup41 · 21/03/2015 11:03

I am enjoying reading about your holidays. So far we have a hotel night booked for £90.

Pondering on a family break but need to do a few bits in the house. Feel torn.

I often wonder if people who spend thousands have beautiful homes and everything they need.

Openup41 · 21/03/2015 11:04

Bonkerz - you have some great deals! Are you staying in B & B's or hotels?

BudsBeginingSpringinSight · 21/03/2015 11:11

I often wonder if people who spend thousands have beautiful homes and everything they need

I have read in past on these sort of threads that many dont have perfect houses, but want to spend ££ on family holidays whilst DC young and come with them, and save the new kitchen for solace once they have flown the nest.

My thinking is the same.

BadLad · 21/03/2015 11:54

I want to be able to spend thousands on holidays and home comforts, so I didn't have children, which I am reliable informed are the most expensive things in the world.

Celticlass2 · 21/03/2015 11:56

I'm not interested in having the perfect house. I never have been. I don't do 'stuff'. Much prefer to spend our money on holidays and experiences.

studiozero · 21/03/2015 11:59

I absolutely don't have a beautiful home, my house is looking very shabby and we don't buy new cars more than once every decade (and they aren't brand new then by a long shot). Holidays are my passion, all my money would go on them given half a chance but sadly we do need to eat occasionally too!

BudsBeginingSpringinSight · 21/03/2015 12:08

I want to be able to spend thousands on holidays and home comforts, so I didn't have children, which I am reliable informed are the most expensive things in the world Grin If I didn't have DC I would also be indulging myself and travelling lots, eating at top restaurants.

GreenPetal94 · 21/03/2015 12:22

Majorca in July. I pieced it together myself. £1500 for two weeks in a 3 bedroom villa with pool, in a non-touristy village. Flights Ryanair £1000 for four (should have booked earlier). I have always found package deals in Jul even more expensive and very cramped accommodation. Having more space and your own BBQ and oven does cut down on costs as there is less need to always eat out.

Because I live in Scotland I value a sun holiday each year very highly. Also our kids are a great age for going abroad with but won't be living at home so much longer.

GoooRooo · 21/03/2015 12:23

BadLad you're not wrong. Before I had children I travelled extensively.

I plan to spend my retirement spending every penny I have on travelling. Only about 30 years to go.

Wow, that's a brilliant price for Eurostar. Is that in the Summer holidays?

Monica101 · 21/03/2015 13:06

I spend about £2500 on 2 weeks away a year. That is for two adults and one child. Always in Europe, last one was in Platanias, Crete.

I actually really prioritise spending my money on my house. That's my passion and if I need new carpets, sofa etc I would go without my holiday to pay for them.

Everyone had different priorities.
