to ask how much you are spending on your foreign summer family holiday this year?

I've spent today getting quotes for my family of 5 to spend two weeks in Spain/Italy/Greece/Turkey. I'm astounded by how much it costs to spend a fortnight away. Mark Warner quoted me over £10k for s fortnight in their cheapest resort!!!

So where are you going and how much are you paying for flights plus accommodation?

We have a long weekend booked at the moment, but nothing else.

Loosely planned for DP & I:

  • 1 week somewhere in Europe in the summer. Probably about £2,000-£2,500 all in. We like walking / active holidays so usually get away with booking last minute and looking for a deal on somewhere 5* / spa hotel etc. as we don't necessarily have our hearts set on particular dates or locations.
  • 1 long weekend away in the Highlands (3 nights). Already booked. Probably £500-£600 including meals and diesel.
  • Some kind of trip to visit family and friends down south (A week most likely, dotting between Manchester & Leeds). In my experience these things can get expensive. I'd wouldn't be surprised if it costs £1500, but we're overdue to visit (and we'll enjoy it, just find that these trips are never cheap as we can't and wouldn't want to kip in people's houses the whole time, although we might get a night or two).
  • At least one camping trip - £300 including diesel, campsite and a couple of pub suppers. I always say we should do more as we've got the gear and tbh that's the expensive bit IME.

£1200 for return train tickets, hire car & one week in an apartment in the South of France with pool, for family of 3 (I hate flying, and it was actually dead cheap on the train).

Montenegro sounds good, I want to go there actually!

Chchchchanging · 19/03/2015 23:18

Shit we have a high income and I think 1600 is an extortionate level for a non school holiday week in Greece for3, think my expectations might be unrealistic Shock
Those of you spending £5k what's that as % income
Is it something you save religiously for over everything?

Soverylucky, train travel in France is very easy and its how me and my daughter get about when we take the children to France. We go from Paris down the South, you get of Eurostar and cross a few platforms for your train, and all you have to do is remember to use the machine on the platform to validate your ticket.

This is a good site to begin with

£2000 for 2 adults, one child and an infant for 2 weeks at an all inclusive family resort in Menorca.
Normally the budget would be more like £700 for a cheap foriegn deal or a UK caravan or cottage. We had a windfall this year Grin

UghReally · 20/03/2015 07:22

about £200, we're going to stay in the in laws old holiday home on the IOW for a month of child free bliss before we become parents. mmm.

Yosemitefalls · 20/03/2015 07:33

Chchchchanging holidays are my absolute priority over pretty much everything non-essential. About 5-10% of income I think but I'm rubbish with figures.

£1600 not extortionate for Greece. Of course you could have lived out there for a year in the time of the drachma!

ElectraCute · 20/03/2015 08:06

We're having a week in a tent in SW France this year. Will probably end up being £1k all in - accommodation, travel, food, spends. Two adults, two kids.

Hoping for the US and Canada next year - will stay in hostels, take the train, Greyhound bus etc and in Canada will stay with friends to keep costs down. Am budgeting £3k-4k but that will mean a LOT of saving and tbh I'm not convinced it will happen! Will have only one child with us though.

I quite like budget travel - as long as rooms are clean, comfortable and functional I'm not really that fussed. You're only there to sleep anyway! Having said that, I'd love to fly first class one day :dreams:

SconessMcFloness · 20/03/2015 08:13

I read an article in which Matt Damon said he was on vacation with his family and his kids were moaning about the lack of air con in their villa and he was annoyed by how ungrateful they sounded and he then he thought - we've done this to them.....we clearly don't have the same me funds as Matt Damon but it's always on the back of my mind when booking holidays that our dcs get a variety of holiday experiences from camping to luxury villas....I'd like them to appreciate them all.

elQuintoConyo · 20/03/2015 08:18

€300 for Ryanair flights to the UK, for three seats. Free accommodation (thanks, Dad), another €300 for car hire for 5 days.

Plus cash to go mad in charity shops once we are there! It's crazy how much I miss them.

I live in a Unesco town on the Mediterranean and not far from Barcelona, so beach and culture not far away. Swapping for cattle-class flights and Norfolk... hmm Hmm

smoothieooo · 20/03/2015 11:12

3,700 for 2 weeks all inclusive at a nice hotel in Kos, Greece in August. That's for me and DS1(16) and DS2(15). I paid around 2,900 for a week at the same place last year.

That said, I'm now thinking that 2 weeks is a bit long and that we might be trying to kill one another after the first 7 days...

SignoraStronza · 20/03/2015 11:35

Couple of hundred quid plus the price of a towbar and fuel to get five of us and the caravan to the East coast for a week.

Trip down to Dorset to see my parents - where I will be ever more horrified at the 'Londonification' of the place and just how many 'properties' the local landowners have bought up to cash in on since my last visit.

DD1 will go to France to be with her father. He pays for all flights/transport and they will probably sofa surf as he's too poor tight to rent his own place.

The other two kids and I don't have passports. Parents offer for us to stay in the holiday home in the French countryside that they've finally finished building, but funnily enough am not remotely interested!

BabyGanoush · 20/03/2015 11:44

7k (flight, hotel Athens, boats/transport and little holiday rental with pool) on trip to Athens and Kos with DH and the kids, am a bit worried it might be too hot in July, but should still be fun.

We went skiing twice this year, we got really good deals! just under 4k for all of us, including flights, ski passes and everything (Austria).

Not decided about autumn or winter hols yet, kids prefer skiing (again...) but I'd like to go somewhere warm.

ListObsessed · 20/03/2015 12:06

£600 for a week in Devon, including petrol to get there and back (6 hour drive). Not foreign so not really what you were asking about.

VolumniaDedlock · 20/03/2015 12:18

this year - about 2k on disney paris
last year - 2.5k week in Italy - apartment, ryanair flights, car hire

I'm already pricing up for next year Grin. it seems that for the places I want to visit we can undercut most packages by doing ryanair/easyjet and booking accommodation. if the budget airlines don't fly there, I ain't going there.

rebelfor · 20/03/2015 12:21

£250 for a few days in Scarborough, petrol included.

I've got a 12 week old baby so I won't be flying anywhere hot for a while.

IHavemyownLighthouseyouknow · 20/03/2015 15:21

soverylucky - we're getting a direct train from London to Avignon (about £49 each way, but we did book early) which takes about 5 1/2 hrs, then hiring a car there for the rest of our stay. Can't wait! I love train travel.

Weebirdie · 20/03/2015 15:58

Ihave, out of curiosity, where are you staying once you reach Avignon?

Celticlass2 · 20/03/2015 16:13

We have a few holidays/ short breaks this year. Our main summer hol is in Italy. Flights just under £600 with BA. Apartment for 11 nights, just under £1000 . Haven't decided if we will hire a car, as very good public transport where we're going. If we do though, I'm going to use Avios points to pay for it.

I reckon we'll spend £1,500 on eating out, day trips Ect, so for three of us, around £3,000 or thereabouts.

Celticlass2 · 20/03/2015 16:20

Spent a few days in Alicante in February half term. We didn't have to pay for accomidation, and got very reasonable flights with Norwegian airlines. I really reccomend them. Think they're the best budget airline I've flown with.
Waiting in them to release prices for February next year, so we can book up again.

startrek90 · 20/03/2015 16:38

about 200 euros...the cost of the ferry for three of us and fuel to drive us. 3 of us are going to the uk for a week or so to see my family. Its about a 9 hr drive.

Celticlass2 · 20/03/2015 16:41

Off topic slightly, but does anyone know when Easyjet flights are released for winter 2015/16.
I'm sure they were out this time last year.

PhoebeMcPeePee · 20/03/2015 18:22

2 weeks in Majorca for 4 in August £580 + spending money total around £1k which is less than we spent on 5 days at centre parcs a few years back Shock

Easy jet flights booked before Christmas & travelling quite late/early with no luggage except handheld £460, budget car hire (no cases so can get something tiny Grin) £120.
We are very lucky not to need accommodation (staying with parents) but have previously rented a basic 1 bed apartment on a complex for under £500. Spending money will be probably £250 for shared grocery shops and another £150 for meals out.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 20/03/2015 19:08

I haven't booked anything for the summer yet.

We're going for a week AI in Rhodes in 3 weeks time (DC get 3 weeks off for Easter) for £1.5k (plus an extra £250 for transport this end + insurance). This is ~25% of our net monthly income, and I thought it was quite expensive - obviously not Shock

We normally spend about £2k for 2 weeks SC in Northern Europe in August (plus whatever we spend on food). Last year we did a week in the Netherlands and a week in Denmark.

I'm also considering going away for October half term - no idea where as yet, but open to suggestions...
