to ask how much you are spending on your foreign summer family holiday this year?

I've spent today getting quotes for my family of 5 to spend two weeks in Spain/Italy/Greece/Turkey. I'm astounded by how much it costs to spend a fortnight away. Mark Warner quoted me over £10k for s fortnight in their cheapest resort!!!

So where are you going and how much are you paying for flights plus accommodation?

This year, we are actually staying in this country - borrowing my DPs holiday home (for which we will leave a nice contribution to the wine rack) for a fortnight, putting DD into surf school 10 miles away for 1 week if not both, enjoying some naice wine and food in the house and possibly a few nice lunches while she learns to surf, swimming if the weather is nice, a bit of kayaking if the weather is dull but not dreadful, some cycling, reading, board games, and just relaxing.

I reckon we will spend the guts of €600-800 or so all told. Maybe less, but we will eat well.

Last year, our flights cost over €3,000 and we also spent over another €1,500 there at least, even though accommodation was not needed for 10 days (we paid for 4 days) and we shared some expenses with family.

But we have 2 family weddings this year, so BIG holiday is not an option.

YellowTulips · 19/03/2015 14:44

Far too much Confused about £15k in total.

Hiring a 6 bed villa with pool and paying for DS and DSD to bring a friend with them.

Also inviting some other friends with their DD out for a week of the 2 we'll be out there.

Working on the principle that happy kids will make happy me and DHSmile

Canyouforgiveher · 19/03/2015 14:49

about £15k. We are renting a really beautiful house with pool/sauna on the beach about 2 hours drive from us for 2 weeks. Kids will be able to bring friends to stay. Then we are going for a week abroad later in the summer so flights/house rental/car rental. The 2 trips cost about the same.

MimsyBorogroves · 19/03/2015 14:50

Same as always - nothing. Can't afford a holiday abroad. Or in the UK. Sad

Charliebitmyfinger · 19/03/2015 15:02

3of us driving via eurotunnel to Croatia with Booking.com via Germany Salzburg and Slovenia. Coming back on Autoslaaptrein Grin (Dutch Motorail)40 miles from Croatan resort and then overnight ferry to Rotterdam. These last 2 bits are the most expensive part of the hols. Cost for 3 weeks is £4400. We are on baked beans, pasta costcutting etc and are trying to put a bit in the hols account which has £1700 in so far. It is extravagant but we had 8 deaths in the wider family last year and a parents divorce. We want to live in the moment as ds will be off to Uni next year and dh has had 2 redundancies in 10 years. We want to get our lives back a bit.

Charliebitmyfinger · 19/03/2015 15:08

God I thought we were spending a lot for August including spending money for 100 Kunas (euros) per day. Last year we were able to go July 1st as ds had finished gcses and we went with Thomson sll inclusive to Aruba. That cost £4600 We only needed 450 dollars spending money as the food and drink at the resort was better than in Oranjestaad. Had to pay in advance on visa which has only just started to recover Sad

Yosemitefalls · 19/03/2015 17:29

Notrevealingmyidentity. We stayed in a stunning villa with a complete compliment of staff - 10 of us. Then onto a private tropical island in Malaysia - £15k easily spent.

I've never done that before and never will again as it was ridiculously expensive but it was truly wonderful and I will never forget it. I'm a backpacker at heart and have spent months just travelling on buses and staying in hostels all over the world.

Believe me you can spend lots of money anywhere in the world if you try hard enough!

Notrevealingmyidentity · 19/03/2015 17:52

Oh there were 10 of you. Well that does make a difference.

And the private island !

I particularly enjoy backpacking type trips as I think you get more of a feel for the place than in some 5* hotel which are pretty much the same across the board.

Yosemitefalls · 19/03/2015 18:01

We only paid for 5 of us though. It was just a very expensive villa and the resort on the island was stupidly expensive. It was a lovely experience but definitely once in a life-time unless we have a lottery win.

I've stayed in 5* hotels in India and hated it, went back several years later and spent 3 months backpacking and it was such a different experience and a heck of a lot cheaper!

EsmeOz · 19/03/2015 19:29

Nine weeks in Thailand and Indonesia this summer for my son and I will be costing £4500 or thereabouts including flights. Am budgeting for £50 per day, which is ample in that neck of the woods. Can't wait, whoop!

Charliebitmyfinger · 19/03/2015 19:31

Loving the sound of thre private island and staffed villas [sighs] if I won the lottery I would be booking Branson's villa on lake Como (it is worth googling) meanwhile I shall carry on dreaming......

MetellaEstMater · 19/03/2015 19:45

We are going to Disney. It is costing me my soul Wink

Yosemitefalls · 19/03/2015 21:36

I sound a bit of a plonker though, we honestly never do this type of holiday, just happened within the context of the question that we have done it recently!

I'm at my happiest in a camper van on top of a remote mountain tbh! Not saying it wasn't lovely but I did feel a bit uncomfortable with it all.

PrintScreen · 19/03/2015 22:02

I found the answer to all my problems: Montenegro
Apartment with amazing views , pool and beds for all five of us for 14 nights for £800. Flights for all 5 £1200. No mass tourism. Interesting country. Cheap food. Perfect.

GallicGarlic · 19/03/2015 22:06

Ooh, Print, I wanted to go there! It looks lovely :)

Christinayang1 · 19/03/2015 22:08

Yosemite

You are bringing back a lot of memories...we stayed on batu batu in Malaysia last year, was beautiful

Yosemitefalls · 19/03/2015 22:15

I absolutely love the Far East, much my favourite place on earth. I would love to backpack around Vietnam and Cambodia. Went to lots of places in Indonesia and Malaysia, Singapore etc but didn't reach the other two. Laos as well - so many places, not enough time or money!

littlebillie · 19/03/2015 22:17

I am definitely not spending enough on my holidays

Christinayang1 · 19/03/2015 22:17

W were lucky enough to live in Singapore for a few years, it was a great base to travel from

Yosemitefalls · 19/03/2015 22:24

What a great experience! I can still feel the warmth from here Grin!

Christinayang1 · 19/03/2015 22:28

That's the one thing I don't miss...the bloody humidity!

Yosemitefalls · 19/03/2015 22:34

Yes it is quite overwhelming, Bangkok similar.

oodse1 · 19/03/2015 22:37

I enjoy hearing what other people are doing, I don't like to compare as that is the quickest way to dissatisfaction. For those feeling like they have less money to spend than others, and who might appreciate hearing about people in a similar situation, try Netmums, I find the people on there seem to have less money to spend (generalisation).

Assuming we are talking about this calendar year, this summer we, 2 adults 2 kids, are heading to Canada in August for three weeks to visit family/friends, all accommodation free except about 10 days camping in a Provincial Park (pricey but worth it), so flights circa £2500, car rental (minivan) £1060 (should have booked earlier!), spending money, I don't know, £1000? We're being lent camping equipment / canoes so that helps.

February half term me and the kids took another trip to Canada, very unusual for us to go in the winter, can't recall the flights but one fare paid by DM and all free accommodation (DM paid for cheap cost of guest flat in her retirement village). Lots of fun skating, sledding and one day of cross-country skiing, very reasonable.

April we are heading to MIL in Devon for a few days (£80? train fare plus activities), May to near lakes for a week (DH's aunt), (£100? car rental, £100? train fare, plus activities). We are lucky to have relatives in beautiful places. Also a 3-night camping trip in July with friends, about £150 for car rental and not sure about campsite yet as is run by friend's colleague so haven't heard price.

Might be too exhausted after all that to do anything during October half term and enjoy actually just hanging out and being where we live (London).

We normally house swap for all vacations if not visiting friends, so almost never pay for accommodation, but can be a car rental cost if is a second home we are using.

Travel is important to us, we live simply otherwise (no car, etc.), say 20% of our income, but that's because DH is a student, hopefully graduating this year!

EddieStobbart · 19/03/2015 22:49

We're spending £1m. Bargain as includes rides for the kids on diamond encrusted unicorns.

GallicGarlic · 19/03/2015 22:54

On Mars, I hope, Eddie? Grin
