To think my DB is far too young to watch Game of Thrones

He's 12 and in year 7.
My DM doesn't pay the blindest bit of attention to anything he watches. I'm only thankful he doesn't have internet access.
Am I being uptight? I think 12 is a bit too young, perhaps in another year or two.
He's not mature at all.

I watched one episode and found it too violent. I'm 40, btw.

Minus2seventy3 · 16/03/2015 14:35

GoT is a fantastic show, but 12? Far too young.

JsOtherHalf · 16/03/2015 14:37

No, I really wouldn't be happy with this.
It is far too adult for a 12 year old.

Fairylea · 16/03/2015 14:39

It's full of breasts! Shock No way is that suitable for a 12 year old!

atticusclaw · 16/03/2015 14:40

Its an 18 certificate (MA in the US) isn't it?

sparkysparkysparky · 16/03/2015 14:40

Far too young. I couldn't stomach it and I'm a grown up.

VivaLeBeaver · 16/03/2015 14:43

Mmmm, my 13yo has seen some episodes and doesn't seem traumatised. And that must have been last season so nearly a year ago. She'd have been in Yr 8 so slightly older.

and I do generally pay attention to what she watches. I won't let her watch a 15 film. I was cross when she watched Ted last year at a sleepover.

MrsPeterQuill · 16/03/2015 14:44

It's one of my favourite shows, but I don't think I'd let a 12 year old watch it. There's some quite gruesome stuff in it.

There was a scene in the last series that I watched through my fingers. I don't think I'd want a child watching that.

atticusclaw · 16/03/2015 14:44

Its worse than Ted Viva I love Game of Thrones but its not for children.

stubbornstains · 16/03/2015 14:47

I'm too young to watch GoT, and I'm 41 Grin. Never mind the breasts, it's the graphic eviscerations and decapitations that do my head in.

MrsPeterQuill · 16/03/2015 14:47

There's a world of difference between Ted and GoT! I'd probably let a 12 or 13 yr old watch Ted, there's nothing in that they won't hear at school.

atticusclaw · 16/03/2015 14:47

For example sadist King shoots and kills tied up naked prostitute with crossbow for fun. Previously he makes two naked prostitutes beat each other up whilst he gets his kicks (holding his crossbow at them).

Anyone letting their DCs watch it should be watching it first.

AlmaMartyr · 16/03/2015 14:49

I love the books and enjoy the show but 12 is definitely too young. Some scenes in some episodes are just so grim. The odd episode is probably OK but there are bits that I cannot bring myself to watch.

Skinheadmermaid · 16/03/2015 14:50

Just to clarify i'm a big fan of the show (and the books) so I know what he's watching.
Tried to explain it to my dm but she's like 'oh if its hetrosexual sex i don't care'.
But she's a whole other story. Hmm Angry
I recall watching being completely left to my own devices at 6 and staying up all night watching all the Alien films.

Quite why your DM makes the distinction between heterosexual and homosexual sex OP is her issue but if you're trying to persuade her to change her rules then it might be worth pointing out the homosexual sex.

stubbornstains · 16/03/2015 14:54

And all the rape. I loved the books, by the way, and was looking forward to getting into the TV series, but am far too much of a delicate flower, it seems. So, I don't know if all the rape is in there, but, given what the first and only episode I saw was like, I'm guessing they've ramped it right up...Sad.

Skinheadmermaid · 16/03/2015 14:55

oh yes I forgot about Renly Tyrell!
Ha thanks atticus Grin
I feel strangely triumphant.

12 I think is a bit too young.

I let DD watch it at 14 but she was a very mature 14. Unfortunately she was stupid enough to watch it on her laptop with her headphones in at her Grandparents where knob of a BIL, who likes nothing better to shit stir caught sight of what she was watching and ran crying to Grandparents like a 5 year old.
She had the sense to only watch at home after that.

TheGirlWhoPlayedWithFire · 16/03/2015 15:05

Oberyn recently had quite the orgy involving women and men - that might her shape up!

It's definitely not for anyone under 16 really. Very graphically violent and overtly sexual.

Still as an adult I adore it ( and the aforementioned Oberyn). But it'll be a LONG time before I let the DC watch it.

Is Ted the one with the teddy bear? That is quite tame in comparison. GoT's rated an 18 think Ted is 15, so even the broadcasting bodies would agree Ted isn't as bad.

TurnOverTheTv · 16/03/2015 15:12

I don't let my 15yo watch it!

TheFirstOfHerName · 16/03/2015 15:16

Another one who doesn't let the 15 year old watch it. He is reading the books though. They leave slightly more to the imagination.

TheFirstOfHerName · 16/03/2015 15:16

Not worried about the breasts, but some of the violence is a bit extreme.

KellyElly · 16/03/2015 15:19

It's a tough one, because I think back to the kind of films I watched when I was 12 and I was totally fine after watching them. He will probably just watch them at a mates house in your mum doesn't let him. I think there are bigger battles to be fought with pubescent boys and girls.

NotYouNaanBread · 16/03/2015 15:21

If heterosexual sex and endless graphic violence don't bother your mother, then there's male homosexual sex in at least three or four scenes that I can think of, there are women performing oral sex on each other, rape, incest, incestuous rape. Several prostitutes are abused and killed and a prostitute's baby is killed in front of her (if you want to combine the sexual theme with violence, that is).

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 16/03/2015 15:22

Oh dear. My husband told my son if he read the books he could watch it - they're well into Season 1 now. I didn't realize there were orgies Shock
