To think my DB is far too young to watch Game of Thrones

Skinheadmermaid · 16/03/2015 14:29

He's 12 and in year 7.
My DM doesn't pay the blindest bit of attention to anything he watches. I'm only thankful he doesn't have internet access.
Am I being uptight? I think 12 is a bit too young, perhaps in another year or two.
He's not mature at all.

Without wanting to give too much away, not all the people who've died on the TV version are dead in the books (and probably vice versa). I thought it was pretty faithful to the spirit if not the letter of the books. There's some cracking stuff coming up, IIRC, not least for Arya!

xiaozhu · 16/03/2015 16:31

Woah no way should a 12 yr old be watching!! It's absolutely brutal. Same goes for Breaking Bad.

suzzieanneba46 · 16/03/2015 16:32

Ah thanks for that gasp, really looking forward to seeing what Aria does next.

On a side note its not a sexist, the targarian girl is pretty great :)

DownAtFraggleRock · 16/03/2015 16:32

I'm 39 and I pull this face quite often at it Shock

Waaay to much sex and violence for children IMHO

KittensOnAPlane · 16/03/2015 16:33

No no no - i love GoT and read the all books at least twice, i wont even let my 13yr old DS read them, let alone watch!!

They are simply not suitable 16 maybe, depending on the child, 17 probably, but 12 no way - and quite frankly i think its very bad parenting to let them watch it even if you think they 'are mature'

RussellHowardsWonkyEye · 16/03/2015 17:08

Absolutely not suitable for a 12 year old, the mountain and the viper death match stayed with me for days, it's the worst thing I've ever seen on screen - and I'm 32. Had I watched it as a 12 year old I wojld have lost several nights of sleep. That's before we get in to the blatant sex scenes, inappropriate relationships & sexual violence! What does your mum think goes on?? Would she change her mind if she watched it?

Moreisnnogedag · 16/03/2015 18:01

Jeez I just asked my dh his opinion (I haven't seen it) and he showed me that mountain and viper clip. Fucking hell that's beyond just a wee bit violent. I don't think anyone under the age of 21 needs to see that!!

DuchessofBuffonia · 16/03/2015 18:23

I adore GoT, but agree that 12 is too young. My Y10 students are really into it though (ages 14-15) and all are reading the books as well. I think as it is a fantasy setting, it is easier for them to compartmentalise it as 'not real life'.

There are amazingly strong female characters too.

WeirdCatLady · 16/03/2015 18:31

My dd (13) has read the first five books and I've let her watch the tv series too. We watch it together and i skip some scenes (like all the Theon torture scenes) and we fast forward through the sex as she doesn't want to watch that.

She is incredibly mature for her age and thoroughly enjoys the strong female characters like Arya, Brienne, Cersei and Dany. I don't think it is suitable for all young teens but we as parents made the decision that it was okay for her.

TrulyTurtles · 16/03/2015 18:31

Back to beginning of thread, but Viva, I wouldn't let dd watch Ted at that age on the basis that it's shite. Grin
Another GOT fan who wouldn't let child of that age watch it.

Scrumbled · 16/03/2015 18:35

My son at 12 didnt want to watch it, he walked in once when a very graphic sex sscene was on. That was enough for him.

iklboo · 16/03/2015 19:07

FIL took 13 year old nephew to see Ted. He thought it was going to be like The Muppets.

Lillabet · 16/03/2015 19:12

Err, no! Just asked DH and he lookedHmm at me! We're both fairly open minded and relaxed about age ratings but these days to get an 18/18R means content is very explicit. We love GoT but there is no way we'd let a 12 year old watch it, 16/17 possibly but even then we'd consider it on an individual basis. YANBU op

Northernparent68 · 16/03/2015 19:14

Is nt the real point here that it's not the op decision, it's for her mother to decide. By intervening the op risks alienating both her mother and brother, she could also be seen by her mother as undermining her.

LadyDeadpool · 16/03/2015 19:39

GRRM has said the show passes the books this season. According to the producers there will be deaths in season 5 that have not occurred in the books. A terrifying but exciting prospect for book readers.

Renly Baretheon and Loras Tyrell are just 2 of the many happy to swing whichever way characters I'd use them to stop your mum letting him watch it. As has been repeatedly pointed out it is in no way suitable for under - - 25's-- 16s

Greymalkin · 16/03/2015 19:41

i completely disagree with the poster who said the books leave more to the imagination.
Some of the things Ramsey Snow does to Theon and Jeyne (a character who never made it to the tv series) are so unbelievably hideous I'm not surprised they were cut from the tv production
And what about the bit where Vargo Hoat and his sick mates are on the verge of both raping Brienne at the same time?
And the bit where Biter (thank God he never made the cut either) chewed off the breasts of his rape victims?

The tv series is in no way suitable for any one younger than 18 and I don't care how 'sensible and mature' your DC might appear. It is horrifically violent (esp the epic fight between the Viper and the Mountain) and the way women are treated as sexual objects (Crasters Keep rape scenes were terrible) is very disturbing.

And never mind the bit where they sewed a decapitated wolfs head onto Rob Starks body.

Several of the book characters were children when they were involved in sex acts and sexual violence (Joffrey and Dani definitely were) but they had to age them up for tv for obvious reasons. But this is still in the books that these kids are reading.

Really? There are people on here who have no problem with a 12 or 13 year old watching this? I just can't understand it!

Georgethesecond · 16/03/2015 19:45

It is awful. I mean, I love it but but the sex and violence are awful. And unnecessary to a cracking story IMO. I have let dS1 age 16 watch it after reading all the books. DS2 who is 14 is not allowed, and to be fair doesn't ask.

bumbleymummy · 16/03/2015 19:45

I couldn't read the books. I found them way too graphic. I think what I could imagine was worse than what they could put on screen.

bumbleymummy · 16/03/2015 19:48

"Really? There are people on here who have no problem with a 12 or 13 year old watching this? I just can't understand it!"

There are 9 year olds in DS's class playing Grand Theft Auto Hmm Some parents just baffle me.

ClockwiseCat · 16/03/2015 19:51

I would never let a twelve year old watch this. About fifteen would be the youngest.

nocoolnamesleft · 16/03/2015 19:54

12 seems rather too young. Sex. Violence. Sexual violence. Incest. Rape. Murder. Death by just about every violent method possible. Have you told your DM that the show is nicknamed Murdertits?

Mind you, I do think the casting is fantastic and they've brought it to screen very well. But I wish GRRM would fucking pull his finger out and write the next book. Some of us have been waiting for it for a very long time....

YANBU, The BBFC has rated the 4 box sets as 18 & 15 certificates.

IfYouWereARiverIdLearnToFloat · 16/03/2015 20:06

12 is way too young. My granny with angina watches it & I'm genuinely scared it'll bring on her chest pain!
