To think my DB is far too young to watch Game of Thrones

Skinheadmermaid · 16/03/2015 14:29

He's 12 and in year 7.
My DM doesn't pay the blindest bit of attention to anything he watches. I'm only thankful he doesn't have internet access.
Am I being uptight? I think 12 is a bit too young, perhaps in another year or two.
He's not mature at all.

I am not in the slightest bit prudish (and think breasts and women's bodies on the whole are rather beautiful) but there's a world of difference between young teenagers seeing naked women and them seeing women portrayed as sex objects to be raped and tortured at will.

ShanVanVocht · 16/03/2015 15:33

People seriously let kids and young teens watch Game of Thrones? Are these the same daft bastards who buy them GTA5?

Bambambini · 16/03/2015 15:33

We love GOT and I have a 12 yr old son, no way will he be watching it. Far too violent and sexual.

honeyroar · 16/03/2015 15:38

We love GOTs too, but I refused to let 15 yr old stepson watch it. Now he's 17 we are reconsidering. The sex scenes are pretty graphic and often girl on girl in the background while characters are talking.. The first series was the worst, I thought.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 16/03/2015 15:41

no way is game of thrones suitable for a 12 yr old. ive been watching some parts through my fingers - far too graphic, dvds have age ratings for a reason people should be taking notice of them or at least watching before their children.

NobodyLivesHere · 16/03/2015 15:46

Renly is a Baratheon.
My 12 year old watches it. She's mature and sensible.

atticusclaw · 16/03/2015 15:50

Mature and sensible isn't the point. Its graphic sex and violence and isn't for children. They could become desensitised and there is no telling how it could affect them.

Why oh why would you do it? Why does a 12 year old need to watch prostitutes training one another on how to please a man? A brother raping his sister, a man being tortured whilst prostitutes give him oral sex? women having oral sex and fingering one another.

Its for adults, not for children

Come off it, parent your children.

Bambambini · 16/03/2015 15:58

I cant think of more adult content without veering into porn. It is very disturbing.

AmysTiara · 16/03/2015 15:59

Why is it okay to let a twelve year old watch it because she's mature and sensible?

Ds is also twelve and sensible but it is definitely not suitable for that age group

honeyroar · 16/03/2015 16:03

I totally agree that it's far too pornagraphic for a 12 year old. My stepson has always been sensible - but it's an adult programme.

EatSleepRaveRepeat · 16/03/2015 16:04

Another one who thinks it too much. I have said to DD 16 I don't think its suitable. She actually introduced me to Orange is the New Black and that's pretty strong but I think GOT has more violent and disturbing sexual content

ImAlpharius · 16/03/2015 16:06

I wouldn't let a 12 year old watch it or read the books. I love them (not seen all the series but read all the books) I think the books are more graphic but neither suitable.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/03/2015 16:08

My son, who's 21, said the Viper vs Mountain fight ending was the nastiest thing he'd ever seen on a screen. No way would I have let him or my daughter watch GoT before they were at least 16.

iklboo · 16/03/2015 16:08

Does she think the sex will be 'Carry On Titter Ye Not' suggested rumpy pumpy? It's practically soft core porn - and I'm no shrinking violet. We've told DS he'll be married with kids before he watches it. Joking aside, no way he'd be watching it at 12.

suzzieanneba46 · 16/03/2015 16:11

12 a bit young, 14-16 depending on the person I'd probably agree with. It is a great story, I know plenty of people that turn away for all the gore but love it.

Season 5 next month :)

Although not sure what's going to happen as the TV show has caught up with the published books

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/03/2015 16:13

Unless they pack an awful lot into season 5, I don't see how they can catch up to the end point of book 5. I wouldn't be surprised if they diverge a bit now. It could be a couple of years before George R R Martin manages to get book 6 to the publisher.

suzzieanneba46 · 16/03/2015 16:13

I don't think its pornographic, there's a few mild scenes.

The rape of the queen by Jamie L next to their dead incest son was pretty mild IMO

suzzieanneba46 · 16/03/2015 16:16

Gasp I thought season 5 covers quite a lot of the 5th book, so unless they do get book 6 to them asap there won't be enough to make a full length season 5. Surely they would have to start filming 6 soon if it was being shown next year.

Then again I'm not sure how much it devates from the books? I'm looking forward to reading them one day.

Mistigri · 16/03/2015 16:19

My now 13 year old asked to watch it last year. I said no, she'd have to read all the books first (fairly confident that she wouldn't make it through the rather dull first 100 pages of book 1).

Anyway, she read the first book and then when I was away for work, told her Dad I'd said ok to the first series. She's now read books 1-3 and seen all the TV episodes. I have to say that I don't think it's terribly appropriate for a 12-13 year old but once she'd seen the first series it felt like banning the subsequent ones was shutting the stable door after the horse had bolted.

atticusclaw · 16/03/2015 16:21

I think its become more graphic as its progressed.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 16/03/2015 16:21

I wouldn't let a 12 year old watch it, the violence and sex content makes it completely unsuitable in my view.

MagicMojito · 16/03/2015 16:22

Holy moley 12 is much too young to watch it IMO ShockShock

Yes all the sex/rape/nudity is totally inappropriate, but the violence!!! Jeeze I have to censor my own viewing of it sometimes (not to mension how scary the white walkers are!)
YANBU

bumbleymummy · 16/03/2015 16:22

YANBU Shock No way should a 12 year old be watching it.

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 16/03/2015 16:24

No I would not, and I'm quite laid back about these things. Age ratings are a good estimate in my opinion, but the content of the television series is not for pre-teens. The books may only be slightly more appropriate (slightly), the story is fuller and you can be that arse who knows the spoilers by the time your finished Grin.

Ataraxy · 16/03/2015 16:26

No way. We haven't even discussed the Whitewalkers yet

Love GoT but not for a 12 year old.
