To wonder what perks people get?

I was told earlier that a couple I know were given money from the company he works for which was specifically to be used on a meal out as a reward. I was a bit shocked when I was told how much (I'm quite a modest wage earner, and quite frankly would be lucky to get a cup of tea and a biscuit out of my employer) and also this is not his first reward either. Just a bit curious what other perks people get really?

Interest-free season ticket loan
Micrososft Office for a tenner

...that's it.

Although, my job is pretty flexible and I am able to work from home (hence cheap MSOffice!) now and again, which is better than free coffee.

DidoTheDodo · 12/03/2015 17:21

Um... Coffee?
That's it. I work for a charity.

MumToFourCats · 12/03/2015 17:33

When I was working I had free water and hot drinks, commission free travel money, discounted mortgage and free shares. Had access to discounted shopping vouchers etc.

Now I'm not working there I still get the discounted shopping vouchers and as I work from home I have free access to everything in the fridge and can start or finish work virtually at what time I choose. Grin

Nervo · 12/03/2015 17:39

I get all the school holidays off. I would take that over all of the perks on this thread combined.

MillieV · 12/03/2015 17:42

Me:

  • Performance-based bonus (has been around 20% of my annual salary in the past)
  • Private health insurance
  • Paid for private GP
  • Paid for private physio
  • Death in service (up to 8x annual salary)
  • Free cinema tickets each week for the entire family (we don't make use of it each week though, as we're running out of movies to watch)
  • Free tickets to red carpet theatre premeres in London, etc. when available
  • Free tickets to local events
  • Interest-free season ticket or car loans
  • Car share scheme that can give each passenger £100 a month
  • Subsidised breakfast/lunch
  • Cheap (virtually free) Microsoft office for personal devices
  • Discount off Apple, HP (and a lot of other companies)
  • 26 days holiday, rising to 30 after five years
  • Presents on milestone anniversaries
  • On-site gym
  • Free parking
  • Summer party and several Christmas parties
  • Free Tea and Coffee
  • Business class flights and 5* hotel when travelling for business

DH:

  • Private health insurance
  • 24 days holiday
  • Death in service (up to 4x annual salary)
  • Free Tea and Coffee
  • Annual Christmas Hamper
MillieV · 12/03/2015 17:43

^ Oh... DH also has up to 20% performance-based bonus.

MillieV · 12/03/2015 17:46

^^ and another thing I forgot - quite generous pension plan contributions for me. Company pays in between 10-16%, I can add on top of that.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 12/03/2015 17:54

I might one day swap my little perks for an in house job with pension and paid holidays because they are worth £££££ but I cant afford the childcare needed to commit to those kinds of jobs at the moment.

DidoTheDodo · 12/03/2015 17:59

I knew I shouldn't have read this thread. :(

Shakey1500 · 12/03/2015 18:00

If I earnt 5million pounds a year, tax free, up till retirement I still couldn't afford the product we sell Shock so staff discount doesn't apply.

Can't think of any worthy perks to note.

googoodolly · 12/03/2015 18:01

Free parking.
Annual bonus each February.
Paid breaks.
10% discount in store and online.
Discounted gym membership.
Discounts at several local restaurants and cafés.
Free uniform.
Free breakfast occasionally - if not, it's heavily discounted (think less than £2 for a full English).
Celebratory lunches once a month (free).
£20 "thank you" store card every Christmas.
Double discount days once or twice a year where we get 20% off.

TedAndLola · 12/03/2015 18:02

Pension with up to 5% employer contributions
Free gym / sports club membership
Free fruit, tea and coffee (including non-standard ones like peppermint and fruit tea)
Six-monthly bonuses linked to personal performance, grade and company profit
Christmas raffle where all the supplier gifts are raffled off, this is the only way we can accept them
Six social events a year with free bar plus optional awards dinners etc
Lunch paid for if away from the office at lunch time (if necessary for a client, not just because you fancy it) and dinner if working approved overtime after 8pm
Use of pool cars when not needed for business use
25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, this goes up as your grade does
Can take a sabbatical after three years of employment
Life assurance - they pay 3x your salary to your chosen 'next of kin' if you die while employed
We are promoted when we reach the required standard, we don't have to wait for someone to leave and a position become available

I'm sure there are lots more I've forgotten / take for granted. I'm very lucky, it's a company that recognises happy employees are better employees.

squoosh · 12/03/2015 18:02

Shakey do you sell nuclear arms?

Ilovefluffysheep · 12/03/2015 18:07

Wow, some people get some amazing perks!

DakotaFanny · 12/03/2015 18:07

Every day I get to work with amazing people who never moan and students who know the difference between of and have, were and where, your and you're...

Oh, nope. Error.

Free tea and coffee. Yay!

ChocolateWombat · 12/03/2015 18:14

I get free tea and coffee at work.

DH does quite well,working in an independent school;

  • free tea and coffee
  • free lunch
  • 3 x end if term meals
  • 2/3 discount on school fees.
Patatas · 12/03/2015 18:18

We do quite well, free parking, tea, coffee, juice. 2x Xmas parties, bottle wine and £100 Xmas gift. Up to £1k health allowance per year to spend on dentist, optician, physio, counselling etc for dependants too, this is a really useful and a well used perk. Couple of times a year we get offered free theatre/event tickets. Free gym, subsidised canteen, discounts at lots of restaurants/shops/hotels.

Do feel very lucky to have access to so much, never worked anywhere like it before, so definitely not taken for granted.

snowaccidentprone · 12/03/2015 18:26

2 hours off at Christmas (for our team meal. Which we pay for ourselves).

Pension.

5 extra days leave a year when we've been there 10 years.

Occasionally a bonus. I think I've had 2 in 24 years. Of £100 each.

The Queens birthday (1 extra day leave).

1/2 days extra leave at Easter.

And we can have a salary advance for a train season ticket, which is interest free and taken monthly from your salary.

Really racking my brains to think of anything else.

Time off to be a school governor (I think 5 days a year). I used to be a governor, but not any more. I did 8 years at 2 schools, so I think that's enough Smile

rugbychick · 12/03/2015 18:26

307.5 hours leave a year
Uniform and shoes provided (uniform washed at work) theatre recovery nurse
NHS pension
Discount in local stores when showing NHS ID card
Nursery only closed on weekends and bank holidays, plus a lot cheaper than private nurseries as its NHS owned, so no profit made. Also offer fixed and flexible hours if you don't work set days
Sometimes seen quickly in outpatients if they know where you work!
I got to chose which consultant obstetrician I had at my booking in appt with midwife. I'd been recommended to have her, plus I'd worked with her in theatre! She saw me at every appt

meglet · 12/03/2015 18:28

free tea and coffee.

snowaccidentprone · 12/03/2015 18:29

I'm really envious of some of these.

I used to work in the office at a pie company, and could have a free pie (heated in the staff oven) for lunch!

autumnboys · 12/03/2015 18:37

I don't get any form of financial perk, but I can work from home if I have a sick child, instead of taking unpaid leave. I can shuffle my hours around in school holidays pretty much as I see fit. My colleagues are fab. I get a front row seat at the kids school carol concert, by dint of being able to march in to the church and leave my coat ony preferred chair.

Goalie · 12/03/2015 18:44

Tea/coffee/juice.
Bupa.
Non-contributory final salary pension.
Bonus (normally 15-20% base salary).
£6k car allowance.
Lunch allowance.
Discounts at loads of shops, Microsoft, Apple etc. (via online portal).
Summer kids funday.
Christmas night out.
Annual dinner dance.
Pay passport and travel vaccination costs.
Discounted car schemes (15% off new Ford, for example).
4x salary death in service benefit.
34 days hols (incl. bank holidays).
Work 9 day fortnight, but get paid for 10 (every other Friday off).
Ad hoc performance bonuses - and meals out.

Bloody hell, when I think about it, I'm very lucky.

youarekiddingme · 12/03/2015 18:50

A regular salary!

Free tea, coffee, milk (decent brand!)

Cream cakes on inset days Grin

MissDuke · 12/03/2015 18:52

I get nothing, not even parking (NHS).

DH gets a work van, mobile phone, xmas dinner and a few other dinners/drinks throughout the year. He got £50 vouchers there a couple of weeks ago as a customer sent a complimentary email about him, he gets that maybe 3/4 times a year. Next month, he is going to a different country within the UK for a weekend and will get a tour of a football stadium and a night in a fancy hotel, with dinner/drinks at a reception. He gets bought various gifts too by his boss when he meets targets etc. His pay isn't actually terribly good though!
