my dp NEVER tips

suzzieanneba46 · 05/03/2015 06:13

My dp just refuses ever to tip. This is because he worked in a pizza restaurant when he was a student and never got any of the tips as he worked in the kitchen.

Aibu to think he needs to give this up and just go along with social norms?

I worked in hospitality and retail for over a decade. We weren't allowed tips.
I still always tip.
Think they deserve it!
I always tip my hairdressers.
When i was training to be a hairdresser, years ago i was always told you make your money in tips.
Even if i dont have a lot i always leave something to show my appreciation.

kali110 · 05/03/2015 21:42

Rocketcat wow i would have loved your job!

SwirlyThingAlert · 05/03/2015 21:45

For God's sake, Gone and others, it's part of the person's job to make the customer feel welcomed and appreciated!

Yup! Even though good service is in part of the job description, apparently they're only capable of doing their job properly if people pay them extra to do so according to some on here.
Incapable of doing your job properly means you don't deserve to be in that role if that's the case.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 05/03/2015 21:46

I don't agree with NMW and wherever I am responsible for someone's wage or can top it up without insult, I do so. It's inconsistent but tipping is part of my DNA, being that I'm American.

I would like to see everyone that does their job well earns something like 20 GBP/hour.

Mintyy · 05/03/2015 21:47

Omg I cringe at the stingy fuckers on this thread! I've got that embarrassed feeling on your behalf. How unbelievably crass and socially unasseptable!.

It reminds me of the thread where people were arguing that signs up in an Indian Restaurant saying that people could bring their own drinks, also meant that they could bring their own soft drinks Shock.

Am amazed that such thinking still exists, I truly am.

SwirlyThingAlert · 05/03/2015 21:48

And therein lies exactly why employers won't pay a decent wage. Because they exact the public to pay them instead.
Which would be fine in America if that's the way it works, but in the UK there is a minimum wage set so it's absolutely bloody stupid to tip here! There's no need for it anymore. It's an outdated system.

Why is it socially 'unasseptable?' You've been conditioned to think that way. Tradition has done a good job on you, hasn't it.

Southeastdweller · 05/03/2015 21:51

No need at all to feel embarrassed Mintyy on my behalf and of the other which you nastily call 'stingy fuckers'. We're all free to do as we please with our spare money, aren't we?

Only1scoop · 05/03/2015 21:56

I'm also getting 'cringe' for the 'stinge' out for lunch on Sunday ....

Will leave a bigger tip than usual

Mintyy · 05/03/2015 21:57

Yeah, tradition has done a really good job on me. And until tradition says it is not the norm to tip waiting staff in restaurants then I will continue to do so.

STINGY TIGHTWADS!

And I can think of 10 jobs off the top of my head that are "worse" than care work. What a self-pitying pile of cobblers.

KERALA1 · 05/03/2015 22:02

Applauds minty

SwirlyThingAlert · 05/03/2015 22:02

Would be interesting if people posted their general area where they live to get an idea if it's a regional thing to be normal to tip.
I'm in Yorkshire. It really, really isn't the norm to tip here. If you do, fine, but it's definitely not expected.
Would be interesting to know where the you must tip, you MUST you peasants brigade reside.... Smile

SwirlyThingAlert · 05/03/2015 22:04

STINGY TIGHTWADS!

Rather a stingy tightwad than an up my own arse money flinger scattering a few crumbs to the peasant workers for a job well done.

SwirlyThingAlert · 05/03/2015 22:04

Seeing as you're resorting to the insult slinging, like...

I used to go out with someone who earnt £55k/year and not only refused to tip (on "moral grounds", apparently) but when out in a group, used to remove the £ our friends had left on the table, and pocket it!

Our relationship ended.

CoffeeBeanMonster · 05/03/2015 22:07

I pay how much it says on the bill and no more. My husband thinks I'm mean but I don't care. If restaurants want people to pay more then they should increase the prices.

KERALA1 · 05/03/2015 22:07

You do have some funny ideas swirly

Sallystyle · 05/03/2015 22:08

I'm in Norfolk!

I don't know many people who don't tip who aren't tight wads

Mintyy · 05/03/2015 22:08

"Rather a stingy tightwad than an up my own arse money flinger scattering a few crumbs to the peasant workers for a job well done."

Ok then swirly. That's certainly logical. Glad you are happy.

Next time I leave a tip I will be sure to leave it wrapped in a note saying "With thanks from an up my own arse money flinger". I hope they find it amusing Smile.

Only1scoop · 05/03/2015 22:09

I can't even imagine going out to eat having a pleasant dinner ....good service and ....not leaving a tip Confused

And yes I eat out in 'Yorkshire' quite often.

Sallystyle · 05/03/2015 22:10

Loves my money flinging husband who loves showing wait staff how much he appreciates being waited on while we just sit there.

While he goes too far, I much prefer someone who is generous.

UpMyOwnArseMoneyFlinger · 05/03/2015 22:12

Agree that not tipping is quite wrong.

Do you really want to restaurants to put their prices up coffeebeanmonster?

Sallystyle · 05/03/2015 22:12

I would prefer not to pay more money because some people can't be arsed to tip.
