AIBU to think that DH is wrong about eggy bread?

He likes it savoury, with beans and maybe a bit of bacon.

Now OK I will allow that bacon goes with everything but I like mine like the americans have it, with a sprinkle of cinnamon, maple syrup and a dash of cream.

Also I am cooking it so it comes how I serve it!

I am right and he is wrong, right? Grin

Yuk yuk yuk to most of these suggestions.

Lots of salt and lots of brown sauce here.

nifaitniafaire · 02/03/2015 20:58

Never heard of savoury eggy bread! Ever.

Like the sound of it though, don't particularly like the sweet ones, apart that they reminds me of my mum on rainy Sunday afternoons when I was little

Electriclaundryland · 02/03/2015 21:19

Chasedbybees you are correct! At last someone sensible. Salt and brown sauce is the only way to go!

DamsonInDistress · 02/03/2015 21:36

Those of you ridiculing sweet versions and saying that eggs are never sweet, what do you think real custard is made from?! Milk and eggs and sugar. And what do you think a real bread & butter pudding is?! Milk, eggs, sugar and bread. French toast is just an instant frying pan version of bread & butter pudding!

myotherusernameisbetter · 02/03/2015 21:41

There is room in the world for both, i was just brought up savoury and DH was brought up sweet :o

DrFoxtrot · 02/03/2015 21:51

YABU - nearly all of you!!

I think I've been put off as a child Envy I can't bear fried bread either

mummytippy · 02/03/2015 22:34

Pepper and brown sauce but will now try it with bacon and maple syrup!

callmekitten · 02/03/2015 23:41

The very best way: Fry up 2 slices. spread one liberally with cream cheese and the other with orange marmalade (or other jam, but the marmalade is BEST) Press the 2 slices together so that the cream cheese and marmalade are both in the middle. Yum!!

Have had eggy bread for tea tonight, prompted by this thread.

It was quite delicious, and I ate 4 slices far too quickly, with fried tomatoes and hp sauce. I was going to have 2 savoury (like this) and then have 2 sweet for pudding, but couldn't stop devouring with brown sauce.

When lent is over, I shall try with bacon and maple syrup.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 03/03/2015 01:20

I find the ones made with sweet egg mix onto brioche really cloying. Then served with cream and syrups? Ugh! And I have a sweet tooth really I do :)
Wonder what you'd have to serve it with to cut through the sweet?

DilysMoon · 03/03/2015 04:45

Savoury with lots of salt and pepper, never had it sweet although that sounds lovely too Grin

hugoagogo · 03/03/2015 07:51

Bread and butter pudding is also an abomination.

itsonlysubterfuge · 03/03/2015 09:01

I'm American, I've never even heard of eating it savoury, however we call it French toast and I've discovered the best way to way it is to make it the day before, set it in the fridge overnight and use croissants instead of bread. Also, use half milk and half cream, instead of just milk.

I've looked at a few recipes though and I think French toast is made differently, we use a lot more milk. French toast is like equal parts milk and eggs, whereas eggy bread is mostly eggs with a splash of milk.

a2011x · 03/03/2015 09:04

Savoury 100% didn't know others were not doing the same

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/03/2015 09:08

Agree with Hugo - bread and butter pudding is grim.

JAC25 · 03/03/2015 10:01

Spread the bread with marmite, dip it in the beaten egg, fry in butter or coconut oil, preferably a bit crisp. Eat with ketchup or brown sauce if you want. Granny

Rjae · 03/03/2015 10:46

Probably why Americans are marginally fatter than us! Savoury here but the sweet one sounds yummy too.

yogeek · 03/03/2015 11:10

Just Marmite!!!!!!

yogeek · 03/03/2015 11:11

Gawd JAC25 that sounds great :-)

LongDistanceLove · 03/03/2015 11:17

Eggy bread, bacon, scrambled eggs, with maple syrup, food of ye gods. It just works.

Although Eggy bread cheese toasties are good too, with ketchup.

Norland · 03/03/2015 11:22

French toast is toasted on one-side.

Gypsy bread (or eggy bread as some call it?)

I love that I'm turning into an old fart :)

Clarabell33 · 03/03/2015 11:37

We had French toast for dinner last night as a direct result of this thread Smile I'd mentioned it, DH decided to make it, and was all for savoury until I mentioned that there was bacon in the fridge and maple syrup in the cupboards... American breakfast for dinner, mmmm.

Thanks OP Flowers

HighwayDragon · 03/03/2015 13:10

Crispy bacon and maple syrup

EBearhug · 07/03/2015 10:48

I had to have eggy bread for breakfast, and it's all this thread's fault.
