AIBU to think that DH is wrong about eggy bread?

He likes it savoury, with beans and maybe a bit of bacon.

Now OK I will allow that bacon goes with everything but I like mine like the americans have it, with a sprinkle of cinnamon, maple syrup and a dash of cream.

Also I am cooking it so it comes how I serve it!

I am right and he is wrong, right? Grin

momb

"I like it with a smear of ketchup.
But.... 'camp doughnuts' is a jam sandwich with the edges sealed up with milk, egged and fried then tossed in sugar before eating. Very popular with the Brownies!"

OMG this sounds amazing!!

Beans???? Beans?????? He is BVVVVVVVVVU.

French toast should be eaten either plain (savoury) or with a slather of maple syrup. I'm not entirely convinced about the cream though (I combine the eggs with milk before dipping the bread in). Some crispy bacon accompanying the French toast with maple syrup can be divine (though more indulgent on pancakes and it has to be very crispy)

IME, those who call it eggy bread tend to favour savoury toppings, whereas those who refer to it as French toast tend to favour the sweeter option. But that's just my experience..

CaptainHammer · 02/03/2015 13:39

I'm happy with it savoury or sweet, never with beans though.

Mousefinkle · 02/03/2015 13:57

Both are acceptable.

If you add sugar and/or cinnamon into the eggy mixture then it should be served with sweet toppings but if you don't then savoury toppings are best. It's delicious with beans and cheese but equally nice with banana, maple syrup and ?strawberries.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 02/03/2015 15:01

A bit of maple syrup on it is great, or I could go savoury with maybe pepper and a spash of soya sauce?

Everydayaschoolday · 02/03/2015 15:06

bacon and beans here :)

JugglingFromHereToThere · 02/03/2015 15:12

Oh yes and since someone mentioned bailey's a splash of sherry or madeira is good!
I will def have to try soaking the bread in egg and baileys tonight sometime Grin

Notso · 02/03/2015 15:16

My DC love sweet or savoury. They like savoury smothered in barbecue sauce and the favourite sweet version is a banana sandwich soaked in egg and milk, fried in tonnes of butter and sugared.

I don't like any of it as it's too eggy.

JaquelineHyde · 02/03/2015 15:18

On its own with ketchup, anything else is just wrong.

fishybits · 02/03/2015 15:21

Both!

Eggy bread covered in vanilla sugar is the food of Gods.

Eggy bread with bacon and maple syrup is currency in this house.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 02/03/2015 15:25

cleanmachine try using older bread, the fresher the bread the more it soaks up the egg.

Three day old bread works better than ultra fresh which sucks up all the egg and gets all soggy and disintegrates...

Mind you I used fresh bread last night after this thread gave me the munchies, and I had to use loads of eggs as one slice sucked up all the mixture!

AvaAmulet · 02/03/2015 15:34

very Sweet here with cinnamon, good quality maple syrup with blueberries and a slice if orange (and powdered sugar lightly dusted over the top!). DH has streaky bacon with his, but I'm veggie, so I leave this off mine.... One of our favourite decadent breakfasts, but, needless to say, we don't have this very often)...x

FishyNibble · 02/03/2015 15:58

Ooo, momb fried jam sandwich fritters, that brings back memories of Guide camp! Never had them before or since.

Lolipoplady · 02/03/2015 16:03

I love it on its own with a bit of tomato ketchup or maybe some tinned tomatoes. Yummm. I might have it for tea :)

WyrdByrd · 02/03/2015 17:05

They're called egg patties in my house (thanks nan!) and definitely sweet - with apricot or raspberry jam ideally.

Must admit am very tempted by the sprinkle of salt and brown sauce option, and clearly need to give camp doughnuts a try.

Juno213 · 02/03/2015 17:53

To whoever introduced cheesy eggy bread, I would like to say a very big thank you. It's amazing. It was my guilty pleasure add my lo slept this morning. I'm going to have to try the jam next .

VivaLeBeaver · 02/03/2015 17:58

How do you do it with cheese? On top of a slice and grill? Or make a sandwich of it and put it in a toastie machine?

Juno213 · 02/03/2015 18:52

I made a cheese sandwich, dipped it in egg and fried (in butter). Not sure if that's right but it tasted good.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/03/2015 18:59

Will try that, thanks.

piebald · 02/03/2015 19:19

With Marmite

DoingTheSwanThing · 02/03/2015 19:20

Soy sauce??!?
Salad cream?!!?
Some right weirdos on this thread Shock

The best eggy bread is served with cinnamon added BEFORE cooking, with really crispy streaky smoked bacon and maple syrup.

hugoagogo · 02/03/2015 19:37

Always savoury:we call it eggy toast and dm buttered mine and cut into litte squares- lovely.

But I now avoid the double buttering for health reasons and now usually have a little tomato sauce or marmite.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 02/03/2015 19:46

It's like pancakes - can be either way

JugglingFromHereToThere · 02/03/2015 19:53

Well I think your crispy bacon is weird too Swan (soy sauce suggester here) It wouldn't even stick on would it? Doesn't it just fall off? Grin

DoingTheSwanThing · 02/03/2015 20:08

:-P
It doesn't need to stick, it's all in the fork-loading technique. Sticking can be encouraged by the addition of syrup Grin
