to not let my DD buy this bikini?

Today was DD1's 11th birthday and she received some money from her great aunt who only had sons and nephews and DDs are her only great nieces so she spoils them a little bit.

In her school there is a trend with a very expensive brand of bikini's called Triangl bikinis. DD has decided she wants to buy one. I told her maybe but I didn't want to upset her on her birthday so I will discuss it with her later after having a nice chat with you ladies. She would like this bikini here in the smallest size available.

I don't want her to get it for a few reasons. Firstly, she's small for her age and I'm still not sure the smallest size would fir her at a size 4 adults? Also, she is too young to be buying designer clothes that will probably get ruined. Finally, it is just too expensive IMO at $89 (not sure how much in £££s).

DH thinks I'm being unreasonable and that her money can be spent on whatever she wants. What do you guys think??

Also I think the colour is hideous...

I think she's too young for such a sexy bikini but I might be an old fuddy duddy. Blush

Madeyemoodysmum · 20/02/2015 23:47

Its very pretty for maybe a mid teen but at 11 I'd prob say no. Its a bit too adult shape wise. I like the colour.

mrsfuzzy · 20/02/2015 23:50

sorry but imo it's a bit page 3ish ,wannabe glamour model look. i think it's really more an woman's style not an 11 year old, as the stripes are drawing attention to the boobs etc which not many 11 years have much in that department. plus it is rather expensive imo. there are so many nice styles of bikini for young girls and teens, what made her choose this one ? be prepared for tears before bedtime though.

ChipDip · 20/02/2015 23:51

Yanbu, too adult looking for a11 yo

Notrevealingmyidentity · 20/02/2015 23:52

I'm torn since it's her money. But that is expensive and way too adult for her.

I'd probably say no.

QueenBean · 20/02/2015 23:52

I love the bikini. But I'm a 30 year old woman

Sorry, I just think it's far too adult for an 11 year old

clarad · 20/02/2015 23:53

I agree, obvs DH doesn't really consider that she's too young for that sort of thing. Any ideas for alternatives that might cheer her up??? She chose this because it's "what all her friends have" which I highly doubt. I just don't want to be that old fart mummy who's not as cool as the other mums!!

Some of their others are ok. If she liked a slightly more appropriate one on the website I would probably compromise and let her buy that one..

Notrevealingmyidentity · 20/02/2015 23:55

This one is ok here

Thesuperswimmingdolphin · 20/02/2015 23:57

That's a shaped bikini. Very unlikely she'll fill it out. I would let her fritter the money on something 'cool' but not something that won't fit.

SaucyJack · 20/02/2015 23:58

Um, YANBU. DD1 is 10 in a month, and she has a Moshi Monster swimsuit.

Faaaarrrrr too grown up.

When would she be around her mates to wear it realistically?
When would she realistically wear it?
This is what angle I would go for.

traviata · 21/02/2015 00:00

are you in uk?

has your DD seen these?river island also at ASOS.

I think it's really tricky when it's their own money. But at age 11 I think you can and should step in to divert her towards better value for her money.

but it is irrelevant that you don't like the colour; and how could it get 'ruined'?

She wants to buy her way into 'fitting in' with the crowd, and that's very hard to tackle.

GuiltyAsAGirlCanBe · 21/02/2015 00:00

God lord no! It is hideous, and would look hideous on an adult, let alone an 11 year old!

LaChatte · 21/02/2015 00:01

I think the one Not just linked too is far more inappropriate! I quite like the one OP's DD wants, wouldn't shock me to see an 11yo wearing it. If it's too big now, it won't be in a year or so.

mrsfuzzy · 21/02/2015 00:01

if i had a £ for every time i've heard 'but so and so can /does/ yeah, and so and so's mum is a bit of a slut/ self righteous/ snooty/cow anyhow, do i look like i really care ? tell you what next time i see so and so's mum i'll ask her about it, it's funny how the subject is quickly dropped after that.

Thesuperswimmingdolphin · 21/02/2015 00:01

That coral one is nice. It is important to them to have the cool stuff. I would go with that.

thenightsky · 21/02/2015 00:02

Urgh... its awful.

SaucyJack · 21/02/2015 00:03

That second one is no better either.

Just turned eleven year olds are still at primary school here in the UK.

I'm not usually one for clothing hysteria, but I Would Judge.

Discusting.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 21/02/2015 00:04

Yanbu.Although the reasons given in your op are neither here nor there, there is no way I'd allow some child to wear that

Thesuperswimmingdolphin · 21/02/2015 00:05

Also pick your battles is a HUGE thing. Is a bikini really what you want to be drawing lines over? My eldest came home today with some new piercings (she'd talked about it beforehand and I was cool with it). Bottom line is she's old enough to get it done and I might not like it but it's not a big issue and I'll keep my energy for the scary dangerous stuff. A bikini is small beer.

GoadyGeisha · 21/02/2015 00:05

I'm in the minority here, I think it looks (sort of) okay for an 11 year old. Not too revealing in the top part especially with very little to fill it out. The bottoms are a tad skimpy from the front but much more 'covering' at the back.

mrsfuzzy · 21/02/2015 00:06

lachatte, what is the point of buying so she'll grow into it ? i thought that she'd want to wear it now, sorry, have i missed something here ? must have nodded off for a few moments zzzzzz.
