I know Kanye West is a monumental douchecanoe but this line from his latest song with Paul McCartney is a step too far even for him.

I have CP and I never act like massive bellend Kanye.

AIBU to think Paul McCartney might have refused to put his name to a song that uses that line?

Aah Apologies, I didn't realise there was another with Macca. Yeah that's bad then

Marmiteandjamislush · 18/02/2015 18:46

YANBU, My nephew has Quadraplegia and has terribly painful spasms, that do require him to be held down at times. I don't care what it means in the US, if it has been released in the UK it should be edited/ reworded accordingly.

Dawndonnaagain · 18/02/2015 18:58

I can't get het up about spaz. Shrug. The origins are horrible but its sort of taken on its own meaning which has nothing to do with 'spastic'
I'm an eighteen year old with a form of cerebral palsy. It has everything to do with 'spastic'. Trust me, I've been bullied, shouted at, exposed to embarrassing questions in supermarkets by strangers, had people pinch my blue badge space all the time (another form of bullying) bullied via the internet, too. It has absolutely everything to do with it, and people like who shrug their shoulders and dismiss it, enable those people who feel that they have every right to bully me. So, I'm asking you re-think please, snow.
Thank you.
Dawndonna's dd.

JudgeRinderSays · 18/02/2015 19:10

spastic just means spasming.the word was 'pinched' as a term for those with cerebral palsy who have now decided that they don't like it and don't want anyone to use it in any context even it's proper meaning!

AwfulBeryl · 18/02/2015 19:15

That's Bollox Judge. It's a word that has been and still is used in a derogatory way, which is why people (withher any decency) don't use it any more.

Apart from the fact that this is not true, did you bother to read my earlier post?
Oh, and it comes from spasticity, a greek word which describes the tightened drawn up limbs of someone with Cerebral Palsy. Hence spastic, spaz. It's an insult, it's always been used as an insult, it's still used as an insult and people that make excuses for it being otherwise are being unkind.

SonnyJimBob · 18/02/2015 19:21

Someone will always be offended by something. I don't use the word, but I have no problem with the lyrics.

Nerf · 18/02/2015 19:25

Dawn donnas DS you are putting this more eloquently than I can hug I feel the need to add my voice to the condemnation of posters being a bit 'shrug' about it. The Spastic Society is the previous name for Scope and kind of indicates that the term was very much associated with CP.
It's a horrible derogatory word on a par with paki or gay or any other word describing an unchosen state of being and using it as an insult.

Nerf · 18/02/2015 19:26

Dd sorry.

Nerf · 18/02/2015 19:26

Argh! But not hug, I don't do hugging!

hazeyjane · 18/02/2015 19:27

That is bollocks.

Hakluyt · 18/02/2015 19:32

"Someone will always be offended by something"

Well, by offensive things, then yes they will!

AwfulBeryl · 18/02/2015 19:32

I know hazey, it's like one day a load of people with cp woke up and just though, I fancy a change. I know let's call my condition something else. What a great idea, bit like having a new pair of shoes. Hmm

MuddlingMackem · 18/02/2015 19:34

I haven't heard the song in question, but from what you've said you don't sound unreasonable.

Anybody heard Weird Al Yankovic's 'Word Crimes'? It's a grammar pedant's dream . . . and then he uses the word spastic. Argh! Hmm

Cornettoninja · 18/02/2015 19:38

Retarded just means delayed.

Mongol just refers to the likeness someone shares with someone from Mongolia due to a chromosone abnormality.

Hmm Hmm

Do have a word with yourself if you think the above or the word 'spaz' are ok. You're fucking deluded.

Drop the hackneyed - and frankly plagiarised - argument about language evolving and changing.

Have you ever heard those words used in a complimentary way? No, because they're used as insults. The meaning hasn't evolved or changed at all.

At least own the fact your being knowingly offensive instead of using defences you don't even seem to really understand.

And Kanye is a dick.

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 18/02/2015 20:00

Hi all, as requested by a number of posters we have made an alteration to the title.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 18/02/2015 20:09

If only the radio would bleep it out too.

Wowee, Kanye and Paul McC - now that's a real festival of twatdom.

Dawndonnaagain · 18/02/2015 20:14

You're alright, Nerf, I don't do hugging either! Wink

Beryl Now you're talking, new shoes, I am partial to irregular choice, although Mum bought me these beauties, yesterday!

gorgeous feet!

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 18/02/2015 20:15

Spaz is dreadful
Mong is dreadful
Paki is dreadful
'Having a meltdown' annoys me but I initially think of I.T. meltdowns
'Having a fit' as an epilepetic, even more so.

There are complete dicks that still use them.

Nerf · 18/02/2015 20:33

I don't mind meltdown actually. I tend to think of adults at work at the end of their tether with IT stuff and it's a really visual image for me. I think maybe because it hasn't been strongly and uniquely associated with ASD?

I love irregular choice. I have the cat bag (boots gone due to overuse) and several pairs of heels.

SusanIvanova · 18/02/2015 20:34

Weird al apologised for that and said the word didn't have the same connotations in America. I'm not saying they should have used it in this country but plenty of meaning gets lost in translation even if it's just over the pond.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 18/02/2015 20:36

Love those heels DawnDonna's DD. I have hemiplegia and have to wear a raise on my shoe so heels are out for me

Koalafications · 18/02/2015 20:45

How can the lyrics not be offensive?!
