Infant school assemblies are like Nuremburg rallies, everyone punching the air in unison and going for their Goal.

In the juniors, they sing rousing renditions of songs about Internet Safety.

Now, even as a staunch atheist, I can see the appeal of All things Bright and Beautiful.

Mine goes to a Catholic primary, so God is still fab Grin

Depends entirely on the school - I saw a lot of assemblies at a local C of E school which always involved the hymns from my primary school assemblies.

dreamingofblueskies · 06/02/2015 10:15

My DC's all know the words to 'We Are The Champions' by Queen and '3 Little Birds' by Bob Marley thanks to their inspirational assemblies, I do think it's a bit Hmm but at least the songs are good. Smile

I recently asked my son about what they sang in school. I mentioned a couple of the oldie but goody songs. He looked at me as if I was mental and told me the songs they sing. He gave me an interesting rendition of one, which I could only describe as sounding like a school fight song. Confused

DamFineBeaver · 06/02/2015 10:19

school fight song - sounds about right, with a bit of health and safety thrown in for good measure Grin

Our school likes to teach the kids to sing the latest pop songs never anything religious, educational or traditional. Last sharing assembly I attended the kids were singing 'Counting Stars' by One Republic. It makes me Angry. While we are waiting for all the kids to sir down the head also likes to do a slideshow with inspiring motivational quotes from Muhammed Ali and Gandhi. It's so corny.

ooerrmissus · 06/02/2015 10:20

They are odd, aren't they? every time I've been to an assembly they seem to sing a song about broad beans. I think the orchestra only know a few songs so they just rotate the same 4 or 5 Smile

MyLeftElbow · 06/02/2015 10:21

Ahh do you remember that one about silky chestnut shells and "jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled" or something along those lines...

DamFineBeaver · 06/02/2015 10:23

I'd love to hear a good broadbean song. You don't know how good you've got it there.

No, but that one sounds a bit disturbing...

happygirl87 · 06/02/2015 10:24

MyLeft yes! Autumn leaves when the grass is jewelled and the silk inside a chestnut shell, jet plans meeting in the air to be refuelled, all these things I love so well"! Love that one Smile

My DCs primary still sing things I sang in the 70s 'when a knight won his spurs' 'the ink is back, the page is white' 'daises are our silver' et al. The y have a cheesy school song that a music teacher wrote some years ago.i can't remeber the detail except that it ends 'who's for a good day? Ev-reeee-one!!'

Branleuse · 06/02/2015 10:28

Autumn days.

Enb76 · 06/02/2015 10:28

We get quite a few broad bean type songs, also a lot of happy clappy god love stuff. Clap your hands for Jesus.

There's one about a tractor as well, harvest festival I think. Currently they're singing a class song which is quite fighty and shouty.

When I was at primary we had 'bop with the Rev' and sang stuff like Make me a channel of your peace', 'To be a Pilgrim' and 'Lord of the Dance' to badly played synthesiser. Gotta love the 80's.

there's a harvest one that makes us titter 'The farmer 'comes' and scatters his seed, scatters his seed, scatter's his seed.

Fruityb · 06/02/2015 10:32

We sang 'When a knight won his spurs' and I loved 'The ink is black'! We did 'One more step along the world I go' and one that I think our headteacher wrote about when we are out on the playground. Did anyone sing the one that went 'I just thank you for making me me' that had actions? If I were a fuzzy wuzzy bear meant you had to scruff your hair up. Loved that.

C of E primary school :)

funnyossity · 06/02/2015 10:33

I don't find 'em hilarious - they hurt my ears and get me sadly pondering all sorts like mass rallies, indoctrination and the loss of anything approaching aesthetic standards (By the way I'd love a bit of Queen or Marley these ones are written by council committee I think. ) The motivational quotes are never from anyone as well known as Ghandi - more American sales gurus I think.

I'm depressed about the next assembly I have to go to. I need to start practising my neutral face about now.

Enb76 · 06/02/2015 10:33

Branleuse, that's superb.

PatriciaHolm · 06/02/2015 10:33

I don't think ours sing in assembly - music is often played but I don't think they all sit there and sing.
