Infant school assemblies are like Nuremburg rallies, everyone punching the air in unison and going for their Goal.

In the juniors, they sing rousing renditions of songs about Internet Safety.

Now, even as a staunch atheist, I can see the appeal of All things Bright and Beautiful.

I can't believe that school rules song. Even the tune is creepy. I think someone must have written/posted it for a laugh not realising some teachers would think it was for real and make children sing it.

My dd is called Joanna and she had Sing Hosanna at her wedding. In the chorus my little granddaughters then aged 4,5 and 5 sang "Sing Joanna, sing Joanna!" She turned round and said "I'm singing!"
A happy memory :)

TheHermitCrab · 06/02/2015 11:35

Ahh do you remember that one about silky chestnut shells and "jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled" or something along those lines...

autumn leaves yes my favorite !!

Still have my old hymn books that I stole on my last day! (good christian values ay??)

I'm an atheist but I love those songs!

My partner's sister works in a primary school and she tells me about what they sing, and "silent clapping" they do and whatnot... crazy!

funnyossity · 06/02/2015 11:36

I'd be thrilled with the broad bean song - it has no hint of George Orwell!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/02/2015 11:37

"IF I were a butterfly, I'd thank you, Lord, for giving me wings.
And if I were a robin in a tree, I'd thank you, Lord, that I could sing.
And if I were a fish in the sea, I'd wiggle my tail and I'd giggle with glee.
But I just thank you, Father, for making me Me!"

Ohhh that has brought back some memories!

InfantHercules · 06/02/2015 11:39

Broad bean song is also Autumn Days... Little bass riff at the end "broad beans are sleeping in a blankety bed!"

Fruity - and if I were a fish in the sea, I'd wiggle my tail and I'd giggle with glee. But I just want to thank you Lord for making me meeeeeeeeeee!

InfantHercules · 06/02/2015 11:40

Very funny

HollyBdenum · 06/02/2015 11:41

One on a scooter, beeping his hooter
Chasing my old grandma.

Oh star of Wonder
Star of light
Star that sets your pants alight...

Pointlessfan · 06/02/2015 11:44

This has made me feel quite nostalgic although I always thought that the chorus of "Sing hosanna" was actually "zinga zanga" it wasn't until we had proper hymn books at secondary school that the penny dropped!
Our head teacher at primary school always made up new verses to kum by ah (sp?) eg It is raining lord, it is mother's day, it is bonfire night etc. She could make that one last for hours!

DamFineBeaver · 06/02/2015 11:44

Do you think our kids will be reminiscing happily about the School Rules and Internet Safety song in 30 years?
Perhaps they will. I do remember fondly a stange song about not running when you're crossing the road.

Actually the broad beans are sleeping in a blankety bed was a harvest one I think... Cauliflowers fluffy?

InfantHercules · 06/02/2015 11:51

Even when they're cross and they pull my haaaaaaaair!
Thank you for my friends!

TheNewStatesman · 06/02/2015 11:53

When a knight won his spurs in the stories of old
He was... Face the front, David Briggs, what have you been told??
With a spear on his arm, and a lance in his... Hey!!
Is that a ball I can see? PUT IT AWAY.

No charger have I, and NO TALKING BACK THERE
You're supposed to be singing not combing your hair
Through back into story land, giants have... Roy,
This isn't the playground--stop pushing that boy.

Let faith be my shield, and... who's eating sweets here?
I'm ashamed of you, Marianne, it's not like you, dear.
So let me break free with... please stop that, Paul King,
This is no place for whistling, we'd rather you sing...

funnyossity · 06/02/2015 11:53

That sums up primary school InfantHercules!

Pointlessfan · 06/02/2015 11:56

The kids now probably think that the knight had a charger for his mobile phone!

Thingymawotsit · 06/02/2015 11:57

Conkers used to be one of our favourites. Along with one that went

Please miss, someone stole my pencil and I need it. They stopped us singing it as it got too rowdy.

Pollybun · 06/02/2015 12:03

Sisters,
We used to sing '.....they're fantastic with no elastic, watching them all fall down'

redexpat · 06/02/2015 12:06

Far round the world thy children sing their song
from east and west theitr voices sweetly blend
praising the lord in who something something
jesus our guide our hero and our friends.

Does anyone remember who put the colours in the rainbow? That was quite jazzy.

ElviraCondomine · 06/02/2015 12:07

This is lovely - I once heard it sung by the Year 6 leavers. Every teacher and parent was in tears.

Stinkle · 06/02/2015 12:09

Yes! I remember Who Put The Colours in the Rainbow.

And also

Red and orange and yellow and green [a bit I can't remember] I can sing a rainbow

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/02/2015 12:12
(apologies for the spelling mistake in the Youtube title - it wasn't me, honest!
Stinkle · 06/02/2015 12:13

Elvira year 6 sang that at my DD1's leavers assembly.

Just to up the cry factor they played a slide show on the big overhead projector of their reception school photos and their year 6 school photos

Nomama · 06/02/2015 12:35

The rainbow song

Red and yellow and pink and green orange and purple and blue
I can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow too

Then some rotten sod came and told me Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain... not in any rainbow round here, he didn't!

HootyMcTooty · 06/02/2015 12:42

I've still got my 80s copy of Come and Praise somewhere. Though mine was procured legitimately (looking at you Hermit - tut tut), by being in the school recorder band.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/02/2015 12:55

I realise it is entirely my own fault, for googling it, but I now have that bloody cauliflower song going round and round in my bloody head. Bloody cauliflowers and beans - they can fuck right off!

This may not be the attitude of thankfulness for Nature's Bounty that the composer intended! BlushGrin
