I'm in my 40s and yet somehow don't feel like I've ever got a handle on this.

What times/how often do you brush & floss?

Shower?

Wash your face?

I know there are no 'right' answers to these questions but I'm trying to figure out what it means to be well-groomed and to look after myself properly. Feeling a bit lost. What does it mean to you?

OP posts:
KitKat1985 · 17/01/2015 12:26

Shower and wash hair every morning.
Clean teeth morning and night.
In evening clean face with a facial wipe
Clean underwear every day and outer clothes every day or two (depending on level of wear and how dirty they are).
Shave about 3 times a week.
Pluck eyebrows once a week normally.

DamnBamboo · 17/01/2015 12:29

But surely bathing at night then showering in the morning is not done for cleanliness is it?
Why would you need to both in the space of 9-10 hours, given that all you do in between is sleep and presumably on relatively clean sheets?

RandomNPC · 17/01/2015 12:30

Turn boxers inside out when they get a bit crinkly.
Have a shower when love spuds start sticking to my leg. Smile

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 17/01/2015 12:30

Shower and wash hair every single day without fail unless so ill I'm bedridden. Brush teeth morning and night. Clean clothes every day except jeans which lose their colour and shape if washed too often. Clean underwear after every shower so if I shower twice I will change underwear twice.

I feel horrific without a shower first thing in the morning, it puts me in a bad mood all day until I have one so I might as well just do it first thing. SAHM to a 14 month old so get up before her to have it otherwise I don't get chance.

What's your routine OP?

There is generally no need to wash hair every single day.
I've never understood this either.

I wash my hair no more than 3 times a week. It is very long, I have a lot of it and it simply doesn't get dirty/greasy enough to need washing 24 hours later.

Many immunologists and experts in allergy would argue that we wash far too much.

Other than the stinky bits - bum, groin, pits and tits, or unless you've worked out or it's very hot, how does your body get dirty to the point that it needs to be scrubbed down every day?

Genuinely interested in people's views here?

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 17/01/2015 12:36

Damn I have to wash mine every day, it's fine and lank and greasy. I've tried all sorts to enable me to go longer between washes (would rather not do it every day!) but even my hairdresser concedes it needs washing every day if I want it to do anything other than stick to my head.

Agree in theory that we wash too much but I really feel grumpy until I have my morning shower. It ages me up for the day.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 17/01/2015 12:37

Alpaca I wash my jeans after 3/4 wears, otherwise they get stinky and also a bit baggy/saggy.

QuickSilverFairy · 17/01/2015 12:39

I go to gym four or five times a week, so always shower on those days. I wash my face every night. Just use clean warm flannel in the morning. Teeth cleaning at least two times daily is a must. Fresh knicks daily, bra and jeans get tossed in the wash every four days(during sweaty hot summer days more often)

kewtogetin · 17/01/2015 12:39

Another skanky one here, only shower 2 or 3 times a week but have a bath every night, more for relaxation purposes than cleaning, hair gets washed 3 or 4 times a week. Clothes are worn 2 or 3 times before washing but clean underwear and gym kit everyday. Only clean my face in the morning, teeth 2x a day.

Kim82 · 17/01/2015 12:39

I shower every morning, wash my hat every other day, clean bra, knickers, socks and top every day, I will wear the same pair of jeans for 2 days. Deodorant after shower every morning. I brush my teeth twice a day, floss every other day and clean pjs every night.

Notnaice · 17/01/2015 12:40

I think some of us are naturally more stinky than others. If I workout I sweat but it is my head rather than my body that gets really sweaty so I guess normally my body doesn't sweat much. There is probably much variety in stinkyness

Trinpy · 17/01/2015 12:41

I wash my hair everyday unless I'm ill. It gets really greasy otherwise. Been like that since I was a teenager Sad. I've experimented with washing less often for a while but it just looks awful!

I shower everyday. Brush teeth twice a day. Floss once a day.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 17/01/2015 12:42

However my SIL only showers every couple of days, probably washes her hair twice a week and insists she is very clean and doesn't smell. I always think she looks like she needs a good wash!

Purplepoodle · 17/01/2015 12:44

Teeth morning and night - bit slack.with flossing but electric toothbrush does good job.

Wash face and moisturise morning and night.

I shower perhaps every other day in winter as my skin dries out and don't sweat - wear roll on deodorant though. Summer it's more like every day.

I wash my hair when it's greasy which is usually every 3/4 days as it's very dry.

I wear clean clothes and underwear everyday.

DragonMamma · 17/01/2015 12:53

Shower and wash my hair every day. I occasionally skip a hair wash and put my hair up but it makes me look too young and so tends to be on days with no work meetings.

moisturiser and make up every day.
Deodorant in the morning and at lunch time when in work.

Oh and I shave when I feel it needs it.

Clothes wise, clean knickers and tights every time, clean top every day. I wear a lot of suits so generally my work trousers get worn twice if I can get away with not spilling anything down me.

Brush teeth twice a day and more if needed. I try and floss every day but sometimes haven't got the time to do it properly. I use those interdental sticks instead of floss though.

formerbabe · 17/01/2015 12:53

Shower everyday usually in the morning. Teeth are brushed two or three times a day. I only wash my hair once or twice a week though as it is so thick it takes ages to dry and needs a lot of styling. It rarely gets greasy. I wash my clothes after every wear normally as I'm really clumsy and normally spill food or drink on myself!

SaucyJack · 17/01/2015 12:56

Oh I couldn't be doing with jeans that are never washed. I hate that stretched baggy arse thing they get after a couple of wears. Makes my saddlebags look even worse.

(Am prepared to concede I should consider spending more than eight pounds on a pair)

HotLipsHoulihan · 17/01/2015 13:06

Damn - probably not but I alway feel better when I'm clean and fresh every day - and for me that is a shower in the morning and a bath every evening. I brush my teeth and floss twice a day ( floss once ) and wash my hair every day. I shave every other day and apply serum / body cream / eye cream / moisturiser and sun block daily . Always wear make up which I remove at night with a hot cloth cleanser.

I wash my clothes after one wear - jeans after two - and I change my towels every other day and my bed linen every 5-7 days.

VinoTime · 17/01/2015 13:07

Shower and shampoo/condition my hair usually every morning. Sunday's are sometimes lazy PJ days though so I might skip it then if we're not leaving the house. Deodorant and perfume goes on as soon as I'm dressed.

Wash my face in the morning whilst in the shower. Take my makeup off at night and then cleanse/moisturise.

Brush my teeth twice a day (morning and just before bed) with an electric toothbrush and then use mouthwash. Don't floss as the sensation makes me really cringe. I'm holding my mouth and shuddering at the mere thought of it.

Socks and underwear changed daily - no undies on at night and PJ's are washed after one wear.

Clothes are generally washed after every wear - jeans and hoodies might get 2/3 wears before I start twitching to fire them in the machine.

TBH I feel pretty grim if I don't shower and get myself into nice clean clothes.

AmantesSuntAmentes · 17/01/2015 13:13

We're pretty environmentally conscious. There's no way we'd waste water on daily showers or baths.

Showers twice per week. The run off waters the plants. Good washes in between, teeth twice daily, floss once daily.

NorbertDentressangle · 17/01/2015 13:15

Shower every morning. (Shower a second time if I've gone to the gym or it's a hot 'sweaty' day)
Wash hair every other day
Wash face in the shower in the morning and then at night I remove make-up and wash my face before bed.
Teeth twice a day - morning and night

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 17/01/2015 13:17

Saucy it happens to my £50 a pair jeans too so I wouldn't bother if I were you Smile

Thedragonsinthebedroom · 17/01/2015 13:35

Brush teeth once in the morning unless going out again in the evening then I'll do them again then. I know I need to do this more often.

I shower in the morning or bathe in the evening. Sometimes I'll do both. I wash my hair almost everyday which I know is very bad for it so somtimes I manage to stretch it two days.

In the evening I cleanse/tone. I use face moisturiser in the mornings before putting on my make up. I usually moisturise the rest of me once or twice a week.

I shave armpits every few days, legs probably once a week - sometimes I let this go for longer.

Jeans I wash infrequently. I'll happily wear them several times. If they have a mark on them I'll wash them. T/shirts, blouses, vest tops, etc.., I wash after one wear. Jumpers, cardigans and other items that I wear over the top I wash after a few wears. Dresses I tend to wear twice unless I get a stain on them. Pants/knickers I wear once then wash, bras about three times before washing. Socks I wearonce and then wash.
