Do they really believe this?

Do they think that by murdering innocents they will get their reward? They took my cousin 12 years ago, I will never forget the screams of my aunt.

I hope that the French jihadists rot for eternity.

We were shown Life of Brian during a Study of Religion class at my very strict Catholic Girls high school in Australia in the early 90's. We were then required to write essays about the perceptions of religion (we looked at all religions, not just Christianity). Very progressive for the time really, especially for a Catholic school.

The terrorists certainly are not getting anything except a one way ticket to hell. As for the 72 virgins, this is for the believers in Islam not only a reward for those who enter paradise but those who died in the 'world' as matyrs in legitimate 'war'
Infact anyone according to my brief study into the topic who enters paradise will be paired with a virgin, everyone will be youthful and not aged, also age will remain at a standstill for eternity, it is a belief central to the faith,

I was recently in a meeting with a very, very senior military officer, incredibly well spoken, very polite. This subject came up d he stunned the assembled company by commenting " 72 virgins? I mean,really! Who would want 72 virgins and all that fumbling? Give me just ONE filthy woman! "
I think it was a case of wishful thinking being spoken aloud! Grin

The description of the virgins they'll get is quite entertaining....appetising vaginas (!), breasts that don't hang, completely hairless except for their eyebrows and head. Oh, and the chaps get the pleasure of a permanently erect penis that never softens.

Women, conversely, get the joy of having their husbands back. For eternity.

The "white raisin" thing is a bit of a myth.

Oh, and for the record....the average age of puberty has not changed over the last 1400 years. Aisha was as statistically unlikely to have gone through puberty by 9 as a child of that age today. Not impossible by any means....but not altogether likely.

She was probably a scared and confused little girl...just like the ones who have to marry 50 year old men in the Yemen today.

According to a Muslim friend and this is a direct quote: "we send the not very bright ones to the mosque, to keep them out of trouble, then we wonder why they get stupid extremist ideas off dotty old men living in the past and misinterpret very simple principles of Islam". I wonder if he has a point?

Hester inclined to agree, just pointing out that most religion tries to restrict the freedoms of women.

Caffe I'm afraid the average age of puberty has changed frequently over the last few hundred years. It appears to have been fairly cyclical and obviously diet etc has had an impact.

I don't think we should need to be tolerant of any religion= we pussyfoot around giving them special privileges of status and power and trying not to cause offence- all because they happen to believe in non existant things.

I believe its generally called 'taking the moral high ground' and not 'sinking to a certain level'.

Besides which, I do believe that there is more than one type of Islam. In much the same way that there is more than one type of Christianity, which is also guilty of having one or two intolerant nut jobs fundamentalists. Is Islam as a religion really more intolerant than Christianity or is it just how people choose to interpret and practise their religion to blame? Big difference.

As others have said, this thread is pretty damn full of ignorant posts which are in extremely bad taste and poorly thought out, in light of the sensitivity of the subject today.

And there is the key question. Why have we been so tolerant towards a religion which basically flies in the face of our western values? Yes you can say Christianity in historical times didn't treat women equally but we are talking about that as a past issue. Islam is about 500 years behind the western world. It is frightening. Watching the video clips of Islamic societies is terrifying, never a woman to be seen.
Why have we allowed this?
I taught a number of five year old girls already wearing head scarves. Not allowed to go swimming. Never allowed on school trips. Not allowed to listen to or take part in music. Their parents were permitted to withdraw them from parts of the curriculum. Why have we allowed this? How is it fair to say to a 5 year old girl 'your brother can go on trips and take part in clubs because we want him to have an education. But we send you only because we have to so there is no point in you taking part in anything' Their attendance was bad too - their brothers? 100%. Why have we allowed this?

We are a nation that tolerates different religions and cultures but we also have laws to do with equality and discrimination so there is a conflict here

Either 70 virgins (x3) are pretty disappointed or

3 bullet-ridden cadavers are chilling out in a mortuary with no spiritual future.

I'm betting on the latter.
