I would like to think he could retrain as whatever he wanted - but, as soon as anyone found out what he was doing he would be hounded out of that job as well. Wouldn't he?

Not necessarily. It doesn't sound like his girlfriend's father is likely to hound him out of a job in his business - at least till he cheats on her a few more times.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 07/01/2015 17:49

The mob hounding him are no better than the mob hounding her. Both as bad as each other.

No, they really aren't.

The group of people who are protesting are doing so within clearly defined legal boundaries. The mob of people who out, stalk, harass and threaten his victim are breaking the law.

Jux · 07/01/2015 17:50

Exactly, Ilovesooty. Very apprioriate too. He could have actually learnt a trade which ight have lasted him a lifetime rather than one which will peter out in a few years.

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 07/01/2015 17:52

I know someone, sacked from a job for sexual assault, taken to court and pleaded guilty to common assault. I do believe a plea bargain was entered so the women involved didnt have to take the stand. So narrowly escaped the sex offenders register and had only community service.

Three years later, still on the dole and back living with his parents. And that is without being on the SOR...

Jux · 07/01/2015 17:53

Porto, you are indeed gifted. How do you tell the future like that? What on earth makes you think 'the mob' would hound him out of M&S? Most of us here on MN have said we would be fine with him doing something other than an 'entertainment' type or high profile role.

I'd be perfectly happy for him to work in M&S.

BOFster · 07/01/2015 17:53

As Icimoi said earlier in the thread, "There is no indication that he will be hounded if he takes a job outside the public eye. Indeed, I suspect that he would be commended for doing so in the same way that, for instance, John Profumo was. And, of course, he would improve his chances if he were prepared to acknowledge his guilt."

Icimoi · 07/01/2015 17:53

Until the mob found out where he was working and put pressure on his employers to sack him, like they are doing now!

But why would they? The vast majority of people expressing their concerns are doing so on the basis that the job at OA is one where he would be in the public eye and is potentially a role model to impressionable young people. If he were in that call centre, or working for Costa or M&S in an admin role, none of that would apply. In particular, those would be jobs where he would not be imbued with the fake glamour that tends to attach to professional footballers and which makes them assume that every girl they encounter is gagging for sex with them. If I read tomorrow that Evans had decided to take a job like that, if anything I would respect him for being prepared to start again.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 07/01/2015 17:54

portofinovino: standing between a convicted rapist's entitlement to a job in professional and the mob - a bit OTT I think.

You like calling objectors to this "the mob" don't you? We are all individuals here, and entitled to protest things like convicted rapists using their FIL's money and influence to gain influential and prestigious positions in the public eye.

UsuallyLurking1 · 07/01/2015 17:55

footballers don't move into a retirement home at 35 you know, only a tiny fraction of 1% make enough to retire. The vast majority have to find normal jobs when it's over

Having said that many of them coach young kids......which is a whole new can of worms.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 07/01/2015 17:57

Usually - I expect OA will have no problem at all with Ched Evans either being a role model for young people, or coaching young players. It's been reported that the senior management don't think he's guilty.

iamtheeggman · 07/01/2015 17:58

BBC saying 80% likely to sign

...whatever that means Hmm

ilovesooty · 07/01/2015 18:00

I'm sure he'll be sorted for when he stops playing. I doubt if Massey will want his princess married to a retired footballer without an income. He won't have to struggle like many lower league players do at the end of their playing carers.

ilovesooty · 07/01/2015 18:02

Simon Corney says the decision of the board to sign Evans is unanimous.
He says he's "served his time"

Pfvino, if various anti war protestors chose not to give their custom to a business that had tony Blair on the board, and wrote to say so, would they also be a "hounding mob"?

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 07/01/2015 18:04

Oldham tell sky sports news they are "minded to do the deal, whcih is being driven by the pfa"

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 07/01/2015 18:04

Incidentally, I heard a rep from Venn talking on 5Live this afternoon.

He said that the club approached them to ask them to release a statement supporting CE's signing. They had a director's meeting about it today, and decided they couldn't support it because it was at odds with their family values ethos. They also canvassed staff, and found the majority against the signing. Their decision was to quietly terminate sponsorship.

OA then decided to release a statement that Venn supported the signing anyway. So Venn had to publicly announce that they were terminating sponsorship, and that it didn't fit with their family friendly and community focussed values.

Good on them.

Willferrellisactuallykindahot · 07/01/2015 18:08

X post (I walked straight into that one didn't I!)

Having to change her name even once is once two many times for a rape victim and once more than her rapist will have ever to do, so its a completely moot point anyway.

YonicSleighdriver · 07/01/2015 18:10

Again, another badly written paragraph in this article...

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 07/01/2015 18:18

I just had a thought. I assume he wouldnt be able to play in any away games? There are a lot of football supporters who are really, really angry at this, surely there's the potential that he might not be safe on the field?

grovel · 07/01/2015 18:22

Quick question to those of you who have studied the case more closely than me. I'm happy Evans was convicted so my question is driven by what advice to give my DS about consent.

Suppose DS goes to a nightclub and meets a girl. They both drink a huge amount and stagger back to his flat. She consents to sex and is enthusiastic. In the morning she regrets the sex and (genuinely) can't remember consenting. Would DS (although drunk himself) be expected reasonably to have known that her apparent consent was invalid because of her intoxication? Could he be liable to a rape charge?

I don't think my DS is into casual, drunken sex at all BTW.

grovel · 07/01/2015 18:25

Or, even if the girl could remember consenting, would the consent still "not count" because of her intoxication?

Icimoi · 07/01/2015 18:26

grovel, the advice you need to give to your DS is not to have sex with a girl who has drunk a huge amount. Any apparent consent she gives will not be valid.

BOFster · 07/01/2015 18:26

I think it would be good advice to steer clear of sex with very drunk people, yes. No room for doubt then, is there?

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 07/01/2015 18:31

If she genuinely cant remember anything at all (not just the consent, but the enthusiastic sex too), then that would suggest she was too drunk for her consent to be valid, so yes, he could face a rape charge. Huge odds would be that she either wouldnt report it, or if she did no charges would be brought legally as 'his word vs her word' often means this is the case.

Same could happen the other way of course, ds could be the one not remembering and putting a complaint in for sexual assault...

I've had a lot of drunk sex. ahh, those were the days... Consuming tonnes of alcohol, yet i have never had a complete blank like that.
