Actually I don't believe I am being unreasonable. But wanted to bring it to attention.

MN seems to be a quiet on this today but I think the fight should still go on. I can't link to it as I am so not tech savvy enough but it is on change.org. (Same person whk set up the Sheffield Weds one so of you sogned that one it is pretty easy to locate).Already has over 9000 signatures so please please please continue to sign and share!

Evans won't show contrition or remorse as his subjective pov is he is innocent.he's planning to appeal

Of course Evans should condemn the hounding of the victim.shes been dreadfully harangued online

chocolatespiders · 06/01/2015 16:26

poor women, hate to think what her life must be like now. It is so wrong that they can get away with it. Hope the police take action if they can

ILovePud · 06/01/2015 16:29

FreudiansSlipper you're right. My work brings me into contact with lots of survivors of rape and sexual abuse and so I've always thought I'm fairly well informed on these issues but this case has opened my eyes. Not to the fact that this goes on but to the whole culture around the acceptability of rape in some sections of society and the way that people who I'd otherwise consider intelligent and worthy of respect (like Michael Burke) peddle the kind of rape apologist shit that the media has been awash with in this case.

FreudiansSlipper · 06/01/2015 16:31

yes I am well aware that he is appealing

but those that are wanting to employ him are not appealing his sentence they are ignoring the fact that he is doing this and at the same time giving the excuse well everyone needs a second chance and putting him in the role of being a victim, something he is not

FreudiansSlipper · 06/01/2015 16:33

I do too Pud (regarding work)

I am sadly not really that surprised but I am very saddened

iamtheeggman · 06/01/2015 16:37

prh, I think you are right, the most likely grounds for CCRC fast tracking in this case (as he is no longer in prison) are that his conviction is for the time being putting an end to his footballing career and that, if his conviction were to be sent to the Court of Appeal and subsequently quashed, he would have his career back. Footballers have a short shelf life, both because they are all done at 35 and because time out of the game is damaging to his prospects if he is accepted back before then. I think I accept that as a valid reason for fast-tracking.

What I am more interested in is why RCE thinks he will win an appeal. The finely-balanced aspect of this case was the jury's decision as to whether the victim actually consented or not. Another jury might have decided that she did consent or may have consented and might have acquitted RCE, but that is the one aspect of the case that the CofA cannot reconsider.

He has challenged the judge's summing up and other legal grounds twice already and lost. There is no new admissible evidence that anyone is aware of. What is it that the CCRC is going to send to the CofA by way of grounds of appeal? That's the hard part to fathom.

Earlier on in the thread, someone mentioned the possibility of a fork-truck driver being allowed to return to work. I know of someone who lost his job due to a conviction of a violent crime (not rape) in a warehouse. He lost his job as soon as he was convicted. The crime was arguably less serious than this case and the sentence was much shorter. In general, it's not easier for ordinary people to return to work after a conviction of any kind but especially dishonesty, violence or a sex offense.

I do think this case goes some way to highlighting that there is a rape culture at work in our society and the mental contortions some people will go through in order to excuse rapists and blame the victims.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2015 16:41

An important aspect of rehabilitation is making it unlikely that a convicted criminal will repeat his offence.
Evans doesn't think he did anything wrong, so why should we think he won't repeat the offence against another woman who is unable to give proper consent?

A particular concern with a public figure is that impressionable young fans believe their hero's interpretation of the law and may copy his criminal behaviour towards women.

iamtheeggman · 06/01/2015 16:44

Just to be clear Slowloris - RCE lost his job when he was convicted, as does anyone sent to prison. It's the return to work that people are talking about. Was this warehouse worker allowed to go back to work in that warehouse or a similar one after release?

LineRunner · 06/01/2015 16:44

Exactly, Choc. Ched Evans told his story. He was convicted of rape. He says it wasn't rape because he doesn't personally regard it as rape, it appears.

House I don't know why anything about this case still shocks me but that has, unbelievable!

iamtheeggman · 06/01/2015 16:58

There are always new astonishing things coming to light, House. Unbelievable!

ILovePud · 06/01/2015 17:06

The latest reports are saying there will be a statement tomorrow but that Oldham are still consulting with the PFA and 'other authorities', I wonder who those are and what they are consulting about. I have a horrible feeling they will sign him.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2015 17:11

So his club had the legal right to sack him - and save themselves a great deal of money. His contract states "gross misconduct" are grounds for sacking, so presumably in football, rape is insufficiently important to count as that.
I have a far more mundane job as a scientist, no contact with the public at all. However, I would be sacked upon conviction for any serious offence and I would have to hunt for a minimum wage job. Most of us on this thread would be sacked and our career ended.

Andrewofgg · 06/01/2015 17:14

eggman She could have kept her anonymity if she had sued RCE - the woman who sued the lottery-winner did, although she has since waived it.

But she has left it too late to sue; the limit is three years, which can be extended as it was in the lottery case because he was not worth suing at the time. (If it had not been for somebody in the Prison Service shopping him - unlawfully - to the tabloids she would never have known; there's food for thought). Evans was at last as much worth suing as he is now - probably more - so she would not get an extension.

If I was a betting man I would give the odds narrowly against Oldham or anybody else signing him - possibly doing the right thing for the wrong reasons, but hey, that's better than doing the wrong thing. Let's hope.

iamtheeggman · 06/01/2015 17:22

Thanks, Andrewofgg. I hadn't appreciated that she sued anonymously. I guess the victim had had enough of his crap and that of his supporters to bring a civil claim and has little faith in her anonymity being maintained as it is.

Handily, is also plays well against the accusation that she was in it to "win big".

Andrewofgg · 06/01/2015 17:24

In such minimum fairness to SU as they deserve I think his contract expired before his appeal was heard so they probably wanted to keep their options open in case he won the appeal.
